Wtf - somehow I missed that I can easily use safeup with my raspberry pi 4  … damn… I guess with the next test network I need to test that out!

… I thought I’d need to compile it myself on arm and then saw suitable binaries on github

Port forwarding set up, safeup installed on the correct pi, vdash installed, salt minion installed

Ready to rumble and to test nodes on a pi +node control by salt that can be scaled to thousands of minions (I guess a fast reached limit will be my Internet connection… May need to get a better one after launch Oo)

Not precisely how safe is envisioned… But I’ll just say ill heat my home with raspberries then :innocent:

Ps: no pressure @maidsafe - I will just hit f5 until the next network pops up

If you could do a step by step (and I mean every tiny step) of your process I would hopefully be able to get a node online for the next test :pray:t2:

Here is a script that should help you out.
You will need to update the node version client version and faucet details at the beginning of the script. To the versions in the OP of the testnet

Also you will have to figure out the manual port forwards for your router

Can try to get the time to write a markdown file and upload it to github next week - it’s not super difficult… But the part with port forwarding (and probably how easy it is to get to the raspberry via ssh) will be pretty router dependent…

Awesome script! Even includes initial install of safeup and rust!

Just need a tester so no pressure @scottefc86

Me and @southside had a go a good few testnets back but no joy. Next testnet I will try the script with some port forwarding help from Southside and add more debt to my beer IOU’s

Remind me what router you have again, Scott.
Was it a Pi4 we tried with last time? Should be possible to check the port forwarding works without a running testnet.

Yeah pi4 and just a talk talk router

Send me a closeup of the label sozi can identify it exactly please

Question - am i supposed to set up port forwarding on the router or the pc?

Have never been able to connect to testnet - i assumed it was because of this. And never got my head around it.

On the router

You need to set the pc up with a static IP address

Then

Set up the port forwards to that IP address

Are you sure about this?

I have static but I think folk have been successful without. @storage_guy even changed ip’s after connecting and everything was fine albeit prior tests. He can confirm but I am pretty sure.

My router offers a dropdown with the host names as selection for port forwarding

So this again depends a bit on the router I guess… And is not necessarily a need (I didn’t participate from home yet but didn’t see the need to configure anything static explicitly … My router reserves ip address for clients a couple of days and doesn’t reassign unless needed… )

Good point yea you can set up the port forward without a static IP and it will work.

But if you restart the router and the pc running the nodes ends up on a different IP the port forward will be going to the wrong IP address.

I was meaning static IP on the local network served by the router

Yep, internet connection changed its IP due to an unscheduled router restart which was totally my fault and nodes all survived. But I think @aatonnomicc was talking about set static IP for the computer so the peer forward always goes to the right machine.

Yes I misunderstood.
Was not on my radar, my local ip’s persist unless I choose to forget them.

You can set DHCP on router to give the PC always same address.
