As a minority opinion I suppose I’ll be the lone dissenting voice.
Although “Autonomi” is a fine name and all, it is not as good as sticking with ‘The Safe Network’. The arguments about there being baggage related to that name really don’t hold any water. The biggest failure related to the Safe Network brand will be that the project was renamed right before the finish line, instead of seeing the brand through to launch and making history.
A better path would be to stick with Safe Network and have ‘Autonomi’ be the code name of the first release candidate or the name of the AI related modules that float on top of the network. Subsequent releases could have other fun names like ‘Maveraik’ or ‘Leather Jaicket’ (joking). Kind of like what ‘Maxwell’ was supposed to be. Regardless it would still be the good ol’ Safe Network underneath it all.
No offense to the folks at Maidsafe, I personally like you all, and respect your hard work… but this kind of brand change is short sighted and unnecessary. Sorry.
Agree. I liked the idea of "finally, finally!! launching, after 18 years. That’s some amazing perseverance and something to be proud of. The original Maidsafe logos are still very modern today.
The only reason for re-branding now, that I can think of, is getting some more renewed serious attention from those people that already believe that the SAFE Network will never launch and continue to be delayed, those who already got used to thinking that this project is just a scam, and those who just like new shiny stuff.
But what matters most is launch. The re-branding puts more pressure on people to meet foals on time. Hopefully without cutting corners. (Tip: Never put exact dates on a roadmap
Def respect your opinion @jlpell. I think it could have launched either way and the tech would speak for itself but I think there are at least some potential benefits based off other projects past rebrands that turned out well.
Just a matter of opinion and really only time will tell but at least the technology is back to what it was always supposed to be. To me that is the best. I supported all along the way and I wouldn’t stop now but seeing the tech be as simple and what made me think this could change everything, is a great feeling.
Not trying to convince you or anything just hope you’re still in it for the tech like I reckon you are. As am I. To me the rebrand is bitter sweet but I’ll take it.
I’m a huge fan of Silicon Valley and the fact I spotted Safe on the big screen and there is the first ICO, predating bitcoin. It’s all still there but now behind a thin veil. I realize I’m only sentimental about those things though. I doubt they have any impact upon convincing someone to adopt the tech. I don’t want it to be the flavor of the week (I think it’s usability won’t let it be) but it can’t hurt to be seen as the new kid on the block either.
Assuming there will be hundreds of copies of the network with different tokenomics, I’m sure someone will take the name Safe Network… The legend will live on!
I think all that really matters is if the network works or not. If it works you could call the network anything and it would still be successful. Personally I think safe is not an exciting word. Nobody gets excited by safety. Apart from maybe Health and Safety Executives.
On the main thing about the branding change - focusing on autonomy - in both the network and for users I’m very happy.
I was doing this years ago because it is the one thing that nobody else can claim that sets this apart. It’s also a great hook, and leads into seeing the beauty of how this works. Both on a technical and an aesthetic level, Autonomi will I think stand out to everyone who begins to learn a little about its capabilities, how it achieves them, and how empowering this is for everyone.
We know the uniqueness of the project being S.A.F.E. and so on, but everything else hinges on it being autonomous, and nobody else has that, so any claims to other things, in common with Autonomi fall flat and are easily dispelled: Yes, well maybe, but is blah autonomous? Because if not there’s no comparison.
I think the WP is excellent, but can be improved to emphasise more of the unique and groundbreaking capabilities that this brand will embody, but that’s another topic. It is though also an excellent piece of work - the brand and WP will work very well together IMO.
There was nothing wrong with SAFE Network as a brand either, but I think it’s a good move to relegate the “network” and those capabilities that others already claim (even though we know that they don’t compare), and put it’s foundational quality - Autonomy - front and centre.
I believe it’s better overall, and it’s better for the new, wider and different audiences we want to get it.
Also, and sorry if this has been said before but I havent seen it and it just occurred to me without outside input, if you capitalise the first and last letter you get:
AutonomI
“Putting autonomy back into AI”
yea someone has mentioned it already… but with this forum font it just doesnt look good at all.
As someone else already called out: AutonomI
The capital ‘i’ just cant be distinguished from a lowercase L.
Too confusing and just bad to look at.
If you were to use a font to REALLY accented a capital ‘i’ with the top and bottom horizontal lines on the ‘i’ that might actually look good.
‘node’ is a pretty standard and general term in computing so it doesn’t seem to make sense to try and make it seem like something different here.
The only thing I want to know is what are the tokens going to be called.
Someone in another thread pointed out the possibility of:
Autonomi Network Tokens (ANTs)
Which I love but in reality, sooo many people in the world hate insects or maybe just hate ants, I really don’t think the vast VAST majority of people want to be thinking about or reminded of ants or insects while using their money or paying for something (especially food or whatever)
That said, I don’t think ‘autos’ makes sense (just sounds like youre talking about cars).
‘nomis’ ehhhhh…
So they might have to dig deeper for the token name…
