To get the best of discord is really about joining different communities. I am a member of several communities, mainly research, AI, coding and so on. Then you get into a sphere of things you enjoy.
I am starting to use it as a form of twitter that is much more focussed on what I enjoy. Many of the chats are very fast, but many communities have things like
→ Videos
→ Announcements
→ Press releases
→ Media
and so on So you can jump around and get immersed in projects and areas of research you enjoy.
I should give it a fresh go, the reason above I mention is mostly why I don’t but then that could just be the communities that have previously led me there for some reason or another.
The fast part I think is what needs to appeal to a certain need, it feels like stepping onto a packed train then needing to find the person you need, solve whatever brought you there and get off at the next stop.
Again I am not dissing it at all, I think it is a good move, it is popular, we all like different things and then perhaps I have just not had the right experience either.
I’ve joined ten or so communities for help (Svelte, Rust and some decentralised stuff) and not seen any crypto until I joined the MaidSafe group two days ago.
Discord was developed to serve the gaming community. They liked the integrated chat and voice and ease of setup. It was a whole lot easier and more modern in terms of nicknames, emojis and reactions and an ability to join different groups for different games than Teamspeak. But now its usage has expanded into other areas. I’ve seen a young trendy media company using it instead of Slack for their work chat!
I do basically agree here. Luckily I don’t do anything useful
It’s interesting to hear you and David’s usage, sounds quite nice - especially you saying there’s a web interface so I wouldn’t have to download some massive app onto my lovely light old laptop. Hmmm, getting a bit tempting there.
We’ve decided not to record it I’m afraid, as we don’t want to put people off joining or participating in the chat due to privacy concerns. There will be a lot of follow-up though, so plenty more opportunities to find out more later in the week.
Tricky finding the right spot in the timezones for maximum availability.
