Post 18 — An Invitation to what comes next

Exciting news, just joined Discord.

From safe data storage, to an AI wisdom network, Maid is building and empowering, a safe future for us all!

It has been a long time. During all these years, I’ve come to appreciate the journey and the evolution of the project, along with its small failures and successes. This is something newcomers won’t fully grasp, an experience reserved only for those who have awaited this moment for a long time, etching it into their memories. Ad maiora

  1. Maidsafe about to bring about something wonderful.
  2. Communication networks are going down in the US. Hard to explain reasons.

Gulp…

I’ve seen this movie before.

I’m not seeing that post you have screenshotted on Discord. How to find it?

Nevermind it was Twitter / X not Discord.

I’m also not a discord fan/user for this reason, though I did use it in the past. Imho, discord is overrated and chaotic. I’ve always been glad safe network discussions are hosted on this forum software rather than discord.

I fear this discord move may fracture the community some. not my call though, so oh well.

This forum doesn’t really scale well though. Perhaps the expecation is rapid community growth. Love all the speculation, and when I see the confidence of Maidsafe’s tone of voice, I think it’s going to be much, much bigger than we can imagine.

  1. I doubt this forum is anywhere near hitting any kind of scale limit, or that scalability is any kind of reason for this move. evidence?
  2. Is there any evidence that discord scales better?

Basically I see that as a non-issue unless/until some actual scaling problems occur.

I am not marketing expert, but from basic logic I would say the more communicate canals = better.

I am not a fan either, not saying good or bad but perhaps appeals to a different crowd?

Could be a good thing, keeps this forum… calm.

I think everyone on here prior to Tuesday should get a OG beside their name

hopefully calm does not mean dead. time will tell.

From what i can see the discord platform is to be able to reach a segment of people who use discord and prefer discord over forums.

Discord is a different style of communications between people. More of a conversation in the moment and gone the next. Try and catch up on a fast moving discord server and its not like catching up on a forum like this one. But some prefer the “jump in and talk” style where their conversation is lost in the following conversations. Here its more structured topics and discussions related to each specific topic.

Different strokes for different people is all. Reaching out to a wider audience.

Agreed. I use discord for quick answers to tech questions, when doing VR dev, mostly quick conversation, but helpful.

I use this forum to be inspired by a lot of inspiring people.

However, discord can be the stepping stone to inspiration.

yes, you’ve described much more eloquently the chaos I referred to.

Thirdsies for similar reasons, including also that I make very few exceptions to my no-proprietary-software rule. So I won’t be joining, but do hope (and presume) we’ll be kept up to date here on the forum too?

I see the logic in getting a Discord going though - the kids do seem to love it.

A (teenage) student of mine keeps all his reminders and lists in a Discord thread (or whatever they call it), which gives an anecdotal suggestion of how central it is in some people’s information-world.

EDIT: Case study: Recurse Center | Zulip I know the Recurse Center uses Zulip for perhaps a quite similar use case, with great success, apparently. But, again, Discord is amazingly popular, so it may well be the best strategic move.

Of course!

It’s absolutely not a replacement for the forum at all. And as people are pointing out, it’s quite a different medium. A different tool, for a different job.

Discord isn’t the place for deep technical discussions, or design deliberations, or expansive philosophical chats spanning days, or months… that will always be the forum.

I agree and am anti Discord on principle but have had to use it to access support for things so am in numerous channels there, though I only ever use the web interface.

I haven’t opened it for months but guessed that this is about having to go where your audience is as much as anything.

I’m equally against github, and VSCode but until there are alternatives that get to their level of usefulness it would be counter productive to avoid them.

Hopefully Safe will be part of what helps this happen. Lots of people get this, but many still don’t do it will take time

Discord is a great choice imo. It’s one of the primary comm apps for younger generations, has a lot of useful community features, and many upcoming crypto projects use it as well so it’s a familiar tool in this space.

Obviously this forum will always feel more like home and will likely continue to be so for many of us but I encourage everyone here to help the discord get its footing now so it can be the home for many different groups (that are necessary to a growing project), that might not fit in with this forum’s purpose anyways.

So far though it looks like many many people here are already doing that, so good on you!!!

Excited for the upcoming event!

I just poked my head in there, obvs still very quiet. My impression of discord is that it is the epitome of whenLambo.
I like a good token chat as much as anyone else but discord seems to be next level in that regard.
