Yes! In Wave 2 because Wave 1 is now full. You just have to watch out on Discord:-
server link = Autonomi
for when Wave 2 becomes open. Then you can get rewarded for running nodes.
But you can still run nodes in Wave 1 or the current Alpha testnet to get ready for Wave 2:-
There isn’t a GUI yet but there will be soon.
At the moment it is CLI only or with a Terminal User Interface which requires a bit of knowledge to download and use. I have to admit I’ve not tried it yet but will soon.
But the instructions on the Testnet page for starting nodes using the CLI (Terminal) are good and you’ll be able to get a node started. If you post in there we’ll be able to help.
The Mac version works just as well as the Linux and Windows versions.
OK, so I have been thinking who I could get involved into hosting some nodes, and what it takes from them and me to make that happen. I’d like to make it as easy as possible for everybody, but also get some rewards if I manage to get more people having nodes online.
Yesterday I made my first ever update on Facebook about Autonomi. It got several likes, even though I didn’t even tag anyone, who I think might be especially interested. If you would like to read my update, the english translation is available here on this forum.
Based on my knowledge of my Facebook friends, I think that most of them would like to support the cause for empowering we the people against them the corporations. I also think that like 95% of them don’t use Discord and could possibly be repelled by the thought of getting some cryptocurrency in reward for running the node. (Just because cryptocurrency=the worst of humanity for most of them, and I can’t blame them for thinking that way.) So, for the most part the reason for them to run a node is because they want to participate to a positive collaborative initiative (Autonomi), and because of my reputation as a decent guy.
My fear is that if I would just present the whole package of node, rewards and Discord on them in the first contact, many of them would find it overwhelming, and/or find it uninteresting. But if I could start with the node only, and then introduce the rewards and Discord at a later date, it could be more smooth for everyone. And they would also like it. It is the idea of that all that may not be interesting, but once they are in the concrete action, they could even enjoy being part of Autonomi, getting rewards, and maybe even the community.
So I have a few questions:
Can the folks start the nodes just like that, and only later sign up to a wave?
Are the coins people earn going to be exchanged 1:1 to the actual network token when the network goes live? What if there is a need for a restart of the whole network?
And what about those that earn test tokens without signing into Discord? Are their tokens going to have a value in the final network?
Now, after writing all this, I realize, that actually I need to inform my friends about the rewards from the beginning anyway. Because in case someone is interested, he or she might be quite angry for me not telling about it! This makes the question of exchanging the coins to the actual token even more relevant.
If they are part of a wave then they will receive a portion of the wave’s tokens. The wave tokens are set out already and not dependant on the number of beta-tokens earned in total. Each person will get more if they earn more beta tokens
BTW they are not coins. Autonomi does not have crypto coins but they are in-network tokens. Yes tehy can be traded but are not a financial instrument or coins
Of course! If they just want to contribute, and run a node, that’s totally fine. They can do that! The rewards program is completely opt-in.
If they later want to join in, or at any time, they can do that. They will just need a Discord ID, and will have to fill out a tiny form.
No… the tokens that their node earns during the beta will be sent back to MaidSafe by their node automatically… we count them up, and have leaderboard(s) for each wave. You’ll be competing with other people in your wave for a slice of a pool of tokens we’ve set aside, that will get paid to you after launch.
It should feel fun, compettive, but collaborative too
Becuase there is another element in the mix: if we all work together to get more people and running nodes, the overall pool of rewards will multiply, and everyone gets more!
That’s fine… we can keep track of what everyone has earned across multiple networks, thanks to the Discord IDs. Leaderboards stay the same too.
No, they won’t. Test tokens, only exist in the beta Network, and won’t be usable in any way on the live, launched network.
Data is another thing though. Data may well persist. So if you just want to earn the test tokens, and spend them on uploading data (not counting towards rewards) you can do that!
But just be aware that it’s a beta network, and we are testing it, iterating on it… so use it for data with that in mind.
Yeah, if they are comfortable with using discord, and agreeing to the terms (which involve, for example, allow their node to send back some testing information back to base foe us to meaure and improve things) then why not?
It’w not all or nothing either! They could set some nodes running on one machine to compete for rewards, and on another, just us the tokens for data, or contribute for fun. It’s completely up to them.
The problem I see is, HOW will anyone upload on the beta testnets without a genesis amount of tokens dished out in the first place? No uploads no tokens can be earned.
I am not meaning getting tokens to count towards the leaderboard etc, but tokens to upload with. Remember uploading is very important to test and total beta tokens can only ever be the amount generated at genesis.
We’ll be seeding the Network with data, and partners will be uploading data too. This will start the flywheel.
There is no faucet though, as this would break the dynamic… and also, there isn’t going to be a faucet to launch the live network, so we won’t have one here either.
OK, can a node that is running for fun be “converted” into one running for rewards? Or is it necessary to start the node with beta rewards in mind right from the start?
And what if someone tries to cheat by trying to send his converted tokens to a node address, trying to fake his earnings? Do you have that scenario covered?
It’s already been covered by @neo that it’s not ‘cryptocurrency’ rewards they will get in return for running nodes. If you think the idea of ‘rewards’ will still be a turnoff for them then maybe focus on the utility of the token that they will earn in the network. Which essentially means storage capacity at the moment. So “If you contribute some storage on your computer you will get some storage back on the network. Remember you’ve been meaning to backup your holiday photos or share your wedding video with Auntie Alice in Australia? Now you can.”
Yeah, just been drafting my next posts along these lines.
I have also browsed through all my 800 Facebook friends, selected the ones I could approach, and made a subselection most potential 20-30 for early testing. Then I’m thinking what aspects of Autonomi might appeal to various other subgroups, and then I’ll draft more posts along those lines…
Jim if I make a team of 20-100 people to join the beta through my discord id is there any way I can find out who has contributed how much so that I transfer their share of the reward to them later?
