Formicaio

I mentioned that just because the GUI (at least for now) allows you to launch one node at a time, but there is no limit imposed, the limit is whatever the host machine can handle afaik.

I have 66 running locally - its starting to slow down my browsing but Mrs Southside has no complaints about her FireStick do far.
This on a 32GB RAM Ryzen 3700
I’ll likely dial it back to 50-60 though.

Minor quibbles
On opening this in Brave, it asks me if I want to translate from Maltese. Did the translate engine get confused with Italian words in an Argentinian accent?

Also - on a VERY quick first look, the upgrade function does not work ← I need to look at this harder

I also just had a failure with one of them, but a second/third instance I’ve tried to upgrade did work. Although, I don’t think you should upgrade them yet, not sure if it’s compatible or not.

I was only going to upgrade a few - they mostly seem to be earning OK with Version: 0.111.3 so its not urgent -yet …

Im just nit-picking and exploring

This might help folks who are getting tight on space in /var/lib/docker when running Formicaio

I got umbrel running on an old laptop. Seems to work great, though I have to leave the screen open as there doesn’t seem to be a way to access the hardware settings to tell the laptop to keep running with the screen closed. No big deal.

It’s slick and pretty easy to set up, once I figured how to get the uefi boot going.

Really easy to start nodes too!!!

My current question is, With the 4mb node-size reset, is there an update needed to formicaio before it will function on the new network. The nodes I’ve started seem to stay ā€œinactiveā€ so I’m not sure what’s happening.

Great work, btw!!

I saw ā€œinactiveā€ on Formicaio last night but I think tha was me jumping the gun and updating nodes before I was supposed to…

Not sure when you installed the Formicaio app exactly (for next versions I push you’ll see the umbrel upgrade feature working for the app), but right now for you the easiest is to uninstall Formicaio, then install it back again, it will pull the very latest available which will in turn pull the latest version of the nodes with v0.111.4.

For nodes that were running with previous version of the safenode (v0.111.3) since new one it’s not backward-compatible, it’s necessary to remove the node instance and add a new node instance in Formicaio.

Works beautifully. You’ve really introduced a great solution for starting and managing nodes. I hadn’t waded in and the other tools, so I can’t make any comparisons, but this is fantastic.

Umbrel definitely seems worth putting on a more powerful machine and also handling stuff the other apps provide as well. Umbrel Home is very tempting.

Very simple and elegant interface.

When I try to add the community app store I get this error

From a quick search it seems to be a problem with DNS: javascript - What's the cause of the error 'getaddrinfo EAI_AGAIN'? - Stack Overflow

Perhaps retrying, and/or restarting Umbrel helps…?..

@bochaco it’s pure magic seeing this. Incredible stuff, now we are getting to the place where you can do even more magic and I am loving watching this. Well done with :spades: man, great work.

All was running swimmingly, earning nanos, etc., over several days I’ve been away. Formicaio app showed an update available so clicked on it and everything broke! Yikes!!

Rebooted Umbrel, and reinstalled Formicaio and it’s a mess. Graphics a mess and not responsive

Bad update?

The new version requires some styling/js utilities which are fetched from the internet (trying to fix it so it doesn’t need to fetch it from the internet), for some reason it must be having issues to fetch it.

Does the box/PC you are accessing the webapp/UI from have access to the internet? Doesn’t reloading the page fix it after a few secs. either?

It’s weird. I have the problem displaying on my linux mint machine, but I just logged on on my Macbook and all looks fine.

was working fine on both before.

perhaps the browser in that box has JavaScript disabled? the previous version didn’t require it I believe, it was pure CSS.

Running Brave on both machines, same settings. I’m looking at the ā€œprivacy and securityā€ etc. and not finding anything.

(Hopefully the nanos I’d earned will show back up ; ) )

Upgrading does keep the app data, but If you reinstalled it then all app data was wiped out.

Perhaps this is what you need to look at, not sure: https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360023646212-How-do-I-configure-global-and-site-specific-Shields-settings

Don’t see anything there that needs fixed. So I’m not sure where to go from here on that.

Wish I’d checked from my Mac before reinstalling. Oh, well.

It’s passed bedtime and I don’t have a clue what to do next, so I’ll see more tomorrow when I’m fresh.

Thanks for your prompt attention.

Oh, are there plans for Umbrel to be able to accommodate multiple hard drives on one machine? I’m thinking of using it for multiple purposes as a real all-around server for bitcoin, nextcloud, etc. as well as major autonomi nodes, but need more storage. It has lots of ram and processors but want more storage capacity.

Edit: I logged in in Edge browser on same machine and worked fine. Reinstalled Brave, but didn’t help, so completely uninstalled it and then reinstalled it. Works now. Go figure. Went goofy when updated Formicaio, but how knows: I might have done something else without knowing it.

Thanks for your help. I’m really liking the simplicity of Umbrel. Hope I can accommodate more storage devices.

I have no idea, some users seem to be doing it with some hacking, e.g.: Unofficial Guide: How to add more storage - Support and Troubleshooting - Umbrel Community
