We are immersed in “the perfect storm”…
The pessimist complains about the wind…
The optimist hopes it will change…
The realist, adjust the sails!!!
tell us how many of these 20 points are still etched in stone
What about the latest updates suggest any of them wouldn’t be?
Hmm, then why is MS so aggressive chewing up my CPU% everytime safenodes do something? Any answers?
You’ll have to wait on the team for that one, but I seem to remember it was solved
This fix is great! Thanks for all your hard work team. You’ve caught the wind, and we are sailing to an awesome network of digital Islands. Cheers
Thanks for the update team! Lot’s happening in the background.
I’m imagining that some team members may be heads down working on launch related stuff - like marketing, and token integration and such.
Anyway, not long now. Going to be hard for everyone with holiday’s coming up, global politics turned up to “11”, and the launch date just around the bend in 2025.
Hang in there everyone, keep the chin up, because:
Cheers
Pleased to hear an update on this, even if it’s hit some snags… I expect a lot will change when usable apps start to appear. Bring it on!
Agreed. The team is clearly pushing hard, and are motivated to get this done. They deserve a good deal of respect, encouragement, and recognition of the fantastic work so far.
Great to see the progress on various fronts. Keep it up team, but of course, keep balance so you don’t burn yourselves out!
Excited to see what the coming months bring
Thanks for the update. Some nice progress there. And thankyou for all the hard work each and every dev does, it will be remembered by all the old timers and hopefully there will be some note with names added to the doco and/or in the code for future generations to see.
The new update seems to be functioning well. And even earned something on relay nodes.
Any news on when you might be able to review the charging algo. Maybe just making the slope of the curve less steep. Seems wrong to go from charging almost nothing until about 45% full to charging almost max amount at 55% full. Wreaks incentive.
@Joop77 @Josh @scottefc86 When you click on @joshuef you can see he is still in the Maidsafe group but @bochaco is not.
That is probably the best way to know the status of someone. And its less than a month since he was mentioned. IIRC one of or is the lead developer(s) so less likely to hear about him anyhow.
I think it’s tough and hard hard work right now. There’s occasion’s where folk are medically signed off and just cannot be around during those times. So we all need to consider these things. I know myself I have been long term sick, but getting better.
It’s always good to know many things, but sometimes the guys just need time out and sometimes we will have team members who drop off and whatnot. This is the hard part of being open, it’s reasonable to want to know, but it’s also reasonable folk want a wee bit of quiet time away as well, or indeed medically they have to.
This is where being public can feel to the team at times like living in a fishbowl and I can see both sides clearly. I think it stops many of the team reading and posting though. We are all different and I don’t mind personally as I feel I owe it to the community and investors to be visible and questioned on my actions. But it’s far from simple at times
Nothing groundbreaking & worth doing is ever easy.
We’ll be in the promised land soon enough and hopefully shall all gain some cheer and fortitude from our awareness of that as we move ever closer to the goal.
If, and I realise it is a big if because I don’t know the specifics and am basing this on what David seems to be implying there.
If we are seeing key devs burn out and disappear for weeks, or leave altogether due to the launch or die and work all the hours available switch from what was a groundbreaking and healthy culture previously… then we might wonder about the wisdom of this approach in the long term. Some of us don’t need to wonder BTW.
We see it everywhere and some of us who have been in the industry for many years know to avoid it like the plague. We also know it’s not necessary for success. It does individuals harm and is part of a wider culture that causes far greater harms.
If you want that, it is your choice, go work for a VC who doesn’t give a shit about you and be part of the culture where only one thing matters.
We’ve been there, seen the consequences for people and planet, and this project was I thought, supposed to challenge that.
I won’t praise devs for working themselves to ill health. They need help challenging that, not praise for self harming. I abhor those who set up a culture that expects that of them and doesn’t care.
Very well said, lets all be realists
Maybe he is just a super hero, but @bochaco is posting just today too: Formicaio - #99 by bochaco
Red alert and panic stations averted?! Relax folks!
The plan was, and still is, to sign the Windows binaries with a code-signing certificate. It hasn’t been done yet.
The first problem was, it took about 3/4 months to obtain the code-signing certificate. We had to figure out exactly what we needed, then we went through a painful bureaucratic process to get verified by the certificate provider.
Then after we actually obtained the certificate, a million other things came up that had higher priority, so we didn’t get the time to extend the release process to include the signing. We will be aiming to have it in the next release, but I still can’t guarantee that.
As Ray from TPB would say, “ that’s the way she goes, boys.”
I’d just like to say something on this.
The Maidsafe management team didn’t encourage or make any demands of us to work more hours or burn ourselves out. I can’t go into any details about this, but, we were given good incentive, and I am personally very grateful to @Bux for that.
I know you were making a general statement there, but I just wanted to be clear that it was never something I felt pressured by Maidsafe management do at any point this year.
The extra hours I’ve worked have been completely voluntary. I last took a holiday for a week or so back at the beginning of May, but during that time, I prepared myself for the rest of the year. I knew it was going to be intense. I am OK with this short-term personal sacrifice if it helps get the network out there in the world. I can take a break next year, after we’ve released something. For me personally, the intense work is worth it for a project that I believe in.
Thanks for your insight and perspective @chriso and as noted, I don’t know the full facts.
I want to respond though, that it need not be a culture of ‘pressure’. Incentives can lead to the same thing, with the added benefit that we see it as our choice. I’ve been there and seen the consequences. Incentives are employed because they are a more effective motivator than pressure where people have some choice (e.g. to leave). Also, when some respond to incentives others, even without such incentives can feel they have to as well - it’s part of working together, team identity, a common goal etc.
All of that can be done well or it can be unhealthy and abusive. The way to tell is to look at the effects on those involved and that’s what I’m concerned we are seeing. It’s something I warned about months ago because the signs were there early, and that’s why I commented strongly now.
So my concern is about the impact on individuals: “If we are seeing key devs burn out and disappear for weeks, or leave altogether due…” to the culture, or any other work related situations that’s ultimately harmful and counter productive.
For me, that’s OK. More than that: as I said, I’m grateful for it.
People have different perspectives on this, especially in more recent times. I am OK with giving people choices and opportunities to work hard if they want to. If you also just want to do 9 till 5, that’s fine too.
Anyway, that’s all I’m saying on this.
