The guy registered Safecoin in 2013, he was well aware of MaidSafe back then. So if he has been monitoring the project from that time, he will most definitely be level 2 or above in this forum.
I think the team should debate this closed doors, and be sure to trademark it in every market (and registering the domain name) before announcing it publicly the rebranding.
If so heâs probably freaking out now that we are talking about changing the name. IMO, he wasnât trying to block our use of the name, he was hoping there would be two coins with the same name and heâd get free attention for his coin.
âŚso, given the effort that has to be put into what theyâve already done, replicating that over again is likely a no-go for them - theyâd probably give up at that point. Also if we vote on a new name and Maidsafe immediately goes out and getâs the trademark on it, then this other person/group wonât have time to do the same and claim they werenât trying to squat - especially given what theyâve already done with âsafecoinâ - effectively that would prove they were trying to squat and interfere with Maidsafeâs project and they wouldnât have a legal leg to stand on.
Thus I donât have a worry at all about us taking a poll, level 1 or level 2.
You are speculating about his intentions, and based on that you would be willing to be exposed once again to the same mistakes as before.
The data on the other hand shows that this asshole was very fast in registering the name right after the announcement of the MaidSafe ICO in Bitcointalk.
Decision by committee is already a bad idea (especially if the majority arenât experts on the subject), now doing it openly when there are already assholes who squatted the name is something that is beyond comprehension.
You know what this asshole could perfectly do? While we are again debating on an open brainstorming session with an open poll, he would simply register every single proposed name before the poll is over.
Fool me once, shame on you⌠fool me twiceâŚ
Now that MaidSafe has a proper marketing team, if there is a need to go forward with the rebranding, this decision should be done closed doors like any other company out there.
Theyâd have to sue and theyâd lose ⌠and I believe that in Canada where this trademark was given the loser has to pay the winner court fees as well. Also theyâd possibly lose their original trademark too if they sued as itâd become clear that they were trolling.
Also and again, theyâd have to be fast enough to beat us to the punch and am highly sceptical that theyâd get it first this time around.
In any case, I donât really care so much whether we do a poll or not - just seems like an easy way for the team to judge what a good name might be - or at least shortlist a group of them. And if there is a poll to create a shortlist for the team - there is no guarantee that theyâd pick any of them ⌠so anyone attempting to foil us would have to be super determined ⌠frankly I think itâs bordering on paranoia to believe theyâll go out and fast track the trademarking of everything on our shortlist. â if they are so determined, they can just look at all the suggestions weâve already come up with and trademark all of them asap. So poll or no poll we end up being sued in court.
Well, the team mentioned there would be an announcement at the start of October and mostly left it at that. Iâm happy to wait for that, but folk seem intent in second guessing the announcement.
I thought the whole point of a rename was to eliminate the âcoinâ from the name, to fit with the times. Therefore you would need to make it either of:
