It can be safe, without the -coin crap.
Safe is not a blockchain, therefore,
having our units of account, currency,
is not infringing upon any blockchain’s
claims or usage rights in that space…
Safenet is a an entirely new protocol.
Find one word that fits ALL needs better than safe
4 or less letters, for the protocol safe://, for the currency safe$,
being as descriptive and suggestive about the core message…
as versatile and comprehensible in daily life talking situations.
Once the safenet is released
it is not going to be bound to
any nation nor organisation
it’s going to be autonomous
it can have the name it wants,
as it is taking on a life of it’s own,
and it will likely outlive patent terms…
As for exchange tickers, it could go as SAFE
on exchanges that have no other under the same,
or XSF XSAFE
With further growth & adoption SAFE would be organically
adjudicated by the market to represent the most sought after
project currency… while other projects may well be outlived, too.

I agree the word “coin” makes it sound vulgar… like any other alt! Ethereum, Dash, Zcash… they sound original…!

What about calling each unit a “reserve”? After all, we are talking about a data-backed commodity in the form of a crypto. The ticker RSRV is not being used either. If retaining the term “SAFE” is such huge deal, give the actual token a more technical name including the term something like SAFE Reserve Currency, etc. but keep the branding simple and appealing.

I’ve resisted long enough… how about things that reflect the underlying value backing the network such as data or resources?

“Dat”, or something else that reflects the value behind the Network.

“Res” reflecting the resources that you are purchasing, or similar.
But I’m happy with Safecoin

I think the only way that is probably doable is to devise a name in the form of an acronym without creating a name that makes most people scratch their heads. I personally prefer a final product that people can easily associate with money.

Units would be a simple to use phrase too ‘I still have 10 units on my account’ - ‘could you please send me some units?’

I have been thinking about this.
Let’s explore the etymology of currency names. According to a post in Quora, written by an assistant professor of linguistics Thomas Weir:
I would add one extra category: (e) names of national heroes (like the Venezuelan bolivar, Honduran lempira).
And I would add a curious example for category (d) which is the Guatemalan quetzal (named after a colorful national bird, which tail feathers were used as currency).
Now having this background of how currencies were named, I was wondering about Safecoin.
Considering the amount of marketing materials that have been already distributed with the name of Safecoins and SafeNetwork since 2014, if it can be protected (ie, win the legal battle against Jeff Galloway) I would vote for keeping it.
But if renaming option was on the table, then let’s think what does the currency in the SafeNetwork represent? I would depart permanently from the whatever-coin naming scheme, it is just lazy, trite and lack personality.
For the brainstorming I would ask myself:
How can you “weight” a safecoin, what does that unit actually represent? What’s the actual function in the network? And find a monosyllabic or bisyllabic word that is easy to pronounce.
I wouldn’t create an open poll to get suggestions from the public otherwise this Jeff Galloway will surely snatch them all again squatting and automatically generating cloned shitcoins to give the illusion of commercial use for the trademark office. Even the logo for his shitty safecoin.org is very similar logo from the chosen one for MaidSafe’s safecoin, he is surely actively checking this forum and is maximizing any chance he has to create as much confusion with this project as possible. I am so freaking furious.
What is even more infuriating is that there was no project at all for years at that domain (even though he got the trademark in 2014), so there was a window of two or three years were he was just dormant sitting at that domain. It was easier to fight it back then.
But now that published his cloned shitcoin (I bet its sole purpose is as a trademark defense), I bet now it will be hard to convince that there is no legitimate usage of the name.

It is possible to create a topic in a category that only level 2 and above members can see. I would not go level 1 since that is too easy. And obviously not announce it in any public place. Also google would not see it.

yip 100% it would plus folk pronounce Irvine as Ir Vine (like grape vine). It is an old Scottish name from Gaelic Irbhinn (bh is a v). So more like Urvin I suppose. Anyway it’s rubbish when folk say “vine” and not “vin” that e at the end is a pain, it should not really be there.
But mostly it would be mortifying
