What do you envision as a “total” rebrand? Please define. (This is bait for a follow-up post)
maybe call it SafeCash
I think SAFENetwork as a brand for the network is great. We have to take into consideration, however, that we are establishing an entirely new internet and a new economic standard. I think that deserves some serious deliberation before we start talking about what to call monetary units.
We’re not talking about the Galactic Credit Standard, the Gold Standard or even the Bitcoin protocol. We’re talking about a total re-write of everything. That needs to be the starting point.
Well, if SAFE is out for the coin name, then having it for the network name increases the marketing/branding difficulty IMO because then we have to market two different names and that will be more confusing for people.
So, by total rebrand, I mean pick a new single name for both the coin and the network. I know that is a harsh restart and I accept that a lot of followers here are not going to be happy with that idea … respectfully though, what is the alternative to this problem of using “Safe” when it’s been trademarked by another + it’s in use as “safecoin” already on coinmarketcap?
I don’t really like having this discussion at all and I am frankly unhappy with the Maidsafe team for not getting a trademark on the name in the first place - it’s not like they haven’t had the time to do so … but at this point I can’t conceive of what the alternative to a total rebrand looks like.
I’m horrible I think when it comes to considering new names as well … my best idea so far is “Snet” lol … and I think it sucks. Please! Please, some genius marketer out there – come and save us!
Why does the currency need to be marketed?
I think it’s a core marketing tool - the network currency is one of the core reasons many will be attracted to joining and trying the network, so it’s fundamentally core to marketing. People will see the coin listed on exchanges as well, so having a good name that is unique and interesting and easy to brand will help the network grow.
If we had to argue that bitcoin is the digital currency of clearnet. (Just an example)
It is not required to share the name of the network it resides on.
But I am open to be convinced.
As you suggested in your post… I am one of those who will hate to even consider changing the network name.
I agree with @Josh I think we should fight for SafeCoin it just fits so perfectly.
Just to clarify Scott I am not too bothered with changing safecoin if need be. But the safenetwork has to stay.
I don’t think SAFE can be registered or trademarked,
it’s too generic, and therefore, it can be used by any,
including us.
SAFE:// is the network protocol
SAFE$ is the network currency
we could even build-in a protocol
that can be used for transactions
starting with safe$ or safe$$
additionally to safe://
SAFE Dollar(s) is immediately
understood… worldwide
K.I.S.S.
I think if you read through the OP of this thread you will discover that SAFE or safecoin? has been trademarked by a Canadian? person/firm with regard to their particular crypto-currency … and that is the reason we are discussing the use of this term.
That’s true for bitcoin, but bitcoin doesn’t need to market the bitcoin network - and if they did, well they have the same name. The Safe Network is the MAIN thing we are wanting to market and the ‘coin’ of the network is a great tool for marketing the network … which is why it would be great if the coin and the network had the same name. I’m not saying it’s critical for the network survival - just that it would lower the marketing ‘cost’ overall if the name was the same and I would wonder if we are kicking ourselves by using two names just because we have some emotional tie to the existing name - maybe there is a good reason to have two separate names for the coin and the network though and perhaps I just don’t see what that is. Open to hearing reasons.
SafeNetwork doesn’t have any baggage - no trademark issues or confusion with other networks. SafeCoin has confusion and legal considerations so, imo, should be replaced soon, while there is still plenty of time to integrate a new name into the project.
Yeah josh keeping the Safenetwork name is the most important but I think the coin needs to be as close to it as possible i.e. SafeCoin, safenetcoin just so it’s easier for getting people to use it.
There is also a safenet product out there, so SAFENetwork being shortened is unfortunate.
I’m waiting to see what the announcement is in October. It may all be solved by that.
I think it is too much work and too high cost trying to rebrand. Safecoin maybe necessary but we have to wait until October when new information can provide clues in what action needs to be considered.
I don’t think we have any palpable level of support for rebranding the network. The token—which is intended to be the native monetary unit of an actual legit internet—is an entirely different matter.
We need to start thinking bigger. This is also not going to be just fuel for the network, we are talking an entirely new monetary standard. You think anybody is going to abandon the dollar or euros for “chunks” or any other cockamamie crap we throw out there?
Edit: Not a personal attack against you or suggesting you have proposed anything objectionable. Just trying to provoke discussion.
These were applied for in 2018 Feb & March
I do not see how “safe” can be trademarked but safecoin can and is being applied for.
2018 though … why not 2012! I’m still in shock that someone has gotten safecoin trademarked in Canada and is using it - listed on coinmarketcap. I don’t see how we can avoid confusion at this point … will there be two safecoins on coinmarketcap? How is this dealt with? I can only hope that maidsafe can get full rights to this name and sue this guy into changing his. Otherwise it seems prudent to come up with a new name.
Was called maidsafe in their minds at the time I guess. And hindsight is always better. At least they applied in the beginning of 2018. Since there are no other applications for worldwide then its only the USA which is less than 1/30 of the world’s population that has any issues.
