To a local government in Sweden they sold super duper snow melting products for a high price and high quantity, turned out years later it was ordinary salt.
Maybe not the same but close.

To my findings most people seem to live in different typer of information bubbles and if you are not a member or have special access then your message will get deleted or you get banned or no one will care about what you post. I tried forums, reddit, twitter, youtube without any luck.
The world has changed, not easy to reach new people.
Also think that wave 1 should not need to do anymore referrals, better to try with the larger group of wave 2 for a few weeks and see if they can reach people to fill wave 2-3.
Right now wave 1 mostly cannibalise on each other trying to desperate get rid of refereras.

its very very flawed in my opinion I can chuck up a vps next to no time and now im being incentivised to sign the cat and dog up for discord and run a vps in there name and that worth more than a 1000’s of nodes.

I agree, the reward system is not very fair for people just running nodes versus those who are only recruting fantom beta testers. They can earn much more with absolutely no positive effect for the beta network…

Honestly with 1600 members in discord and nigh on 1000 already in the beta then there isn’t many to take up that offer in chat.
There is like 1500-1875 referrals to give out per week. So if people want their referrals used then they have to go outside the discord or even here anyhow
Once wave 2 starts (after earning bug ironed out) those not earning will not be included in the leaderboard, so their referrals will not count anyhow. The person has to be noticeably trying to earn or be earning in order to be on the leaderboard. I think they get one week’s grace.
But that is after wave 2 starts according to Bux in the discord event and in the news
Currently as the issues being experienced by those unable to earn Nano’s are being diagnosed (and hopefully largely corrected with new network release Monday), we will be crediting all referrals that set up nodes and sync their discord account. However once we have squashed some issues, the person being referred must’ve earned at least one Node Nano for the Boost to qualify - you will also have to earn Node Nano’s to qualify for any Boosts.

I understand that you are very busy with the launch of the network and you probably haven’t seen yet that with the current referral system literally, I emphasize literally the effect is the opposite of what we want and more and more people are realizing that multi-accounting is the way to success.
When long-time members of the community start publicly explaining how they will register their cats and dogs, and newcomers also publicly explain that they will create accounts with VPS, then you can be sure there are already people doing it and it is time to rethink the system.
The solution is for MaidSafe to delegate the verification of accounts to the community, let 2-3 volunteers arrange a video call with each participant to confirm that they are a live person, no conversations will be recorded or personal data collected, such a safeguard will directly dissuade 99% of people from doing multi-accounts.
The protection of Discord with phone numbers is not effective, because a prepaid number costs less than 5 euros and a person who is ready to pay for VPS will pay for N prepaid numbers as well.

and id also put in that I had no referals last week as my cat was at the vets 
id say your video call idea @Dimitar is a very good one to keep the referrals fair.
also perhaps your referrals nanos being tracked and the amount of the reward being linked to the amount of resources being dedicated to the network.
I fully understand referrals are needed and we will need super spreaders which is also being hampered due to the restrictions in amount of referrals.
$5 for a phone number and $10 for a vps is a very cheep way to leap frog the rank table’s

tell them they’ve got to do a video call they’ll run a mile.

We all agree that the current system encourages cheating in the game… 
Should this system be modified so that it is fairer for active members who are really interested in the substance of this project?
For example, wouldn’t it be possible to simply link the accounts so that each week, we add the total nanos earned to the referal accounts?
PersonA gave its referal code to PersonB and PersonD. No bonus given at signup, but each week, PersonA receive a bonus equal to nanos earned by PersonB and PersonD during the week. I think this would be much better !

yes id back that a quality referral would be worth far more than the family cat with a $10 vps
also unlimited referrals so super spreaders could also get to work.
I think that solution would make it work for everyone
I suggested maybe a few thousand nanos so the boost is still worthwhile but not boosting zero node runners to the top 10 is better.

What is the fundamental gripe here, it is that folk who are running nodes feel that their efforts are devalued by the way they are displaced by someone not playing the same game.
To me is seems as though the issue is solved by separating referral rewards from node rewards on the leaderboard.
Although if everyone just does their one referral a week then they are all in the same position, equally competing based on earnings.
This is perhaps a mountain out of a molehill situation?
Im coming around to this view.
We need some bugs fixed urgently ^ and IFF a clearly-voiced decision is taken to
- maintain referral bonuses as a fixed % of the weekly pot for each wave - say 40% for openers
- Get uploads working properly and hence increase the chance of actually earning nanos
- Only pay referral bonuses to those who have provably been running nodes for at least week
- Pay out referral bonuses only after the referred new user has set up a minimum (discuss) no of nodes and earned a certain threshold (discuss) of nanos
then there is some prospect of turning this beta around.
otherwise we will see the Comnet(s) growing in size and importance because we can learn far more from a working Comnet than the present MultiLevelMarketingNet that we have right now
BTW - the vast majority of my rewards are from two referrals.
^ Yes I know there have been devs out sick and everyone is entitled to a holiday at this time of year.
