Since you put “freedom lovers” in quotes I can only agree. Those who truly value freedom do not like big government involvement in our economies, corporate welfare, etc. I would add to your point the ideology of the “benevolent big government takers and sharers” who are only interested in raw power.

Well lets see how all these freedom lovers get on without some central govt intervention in the coming weeks.

The only hope the USA has is to move to a nationalised health service similar to the UK and other enlightened democracies.

Time to ditch this ridiculous “frontier spirit” crap which was only really about the genocide of the Native Americans.

5 trillion dollars sloshing around the globe in a few months time. I wonder what that will do. Of course Japan today is a result of over 20 attempts to stabilise things

I wonder if the G20 in collusion will manipulate the CPI data to make inflation look a lot less than it actually is. They have done it before

Err thats an english language “local” paper for English ex-pats (read immigrants - funny how the english are always “ex-pats” but everyone else is an immigrant?) - I’d look for a more authoritative source than that.

I’m not saying it didn’t happen but I would not trust that sole source.

I can’t tell if it’s true or not, but in Bulgaria only after 2 weeks quarantine there are already people talking about hunger riots… There are people who live paycheck to paycheck …

Yea wow as a pensioner I will get one only $700 in July, and shops restrict me to 2 cans combined of any baked bean product like many other lines, no fresh deli, no tp to buy. Supposed to use delivery for social distancing, but shops are canceling deliveries to many areas.

who knows what we can buy in a few weeks as the young rich strip out grocery stores in panic buying. Garages full of tp, canned food, buying fridges/freezers to store perishables, and actual tonnes of other food

Hope it gets better for you all soon.
The uk is alot better, I’ve no issues getting most things.
Deliveries are all booked but theres spaces made available for ppl who should not go out.

If anyone in uk is struggling to get deliveries, I found this today, bit of a lottery what you receive but it’s better than having nothing.

Its supposed to get better with government assistance to increase deliveries.

And when the rich young people fill their garages then they might wake up to their stupidity

From what I understand it is not because of lack of food but because they don’t have money to buy food, many Italians are poor.

@Antifragile

It is because supply can’t keep up when people sell their stocks and at the same day buys toilet paper for all the money, then the shelvs gets empty for a short time. There is no shortage of toilet paper, it is just a very sudden demand shock that hits stores. In Sweden toilet paper have empty shelvs in the stores but we have no problem producing toilet paper for 10x our population. It is a irrational behaviour by people, they cause sudden shortage because they act irrational, not because there is a supply problem. It would be good if prices goes up or that the goverments limits how much you are allowed to buy, to prevent the zombie hoarders from causing harm to the rational people in the population.

Our supermarkets in Scotland have been imposing a limit of 2 items of any one type. Although there was no pasta or flour on the shelves recently, most other items are OK.
A good selection of fruit and veg and actually at low prices because not so many folk are out shopping.

Seems like a good policy. For the last two weeks there have been empty shelves in supermarkets for pasta, rice, flour, toilet paper, minced meat. But if you went to smaller shops with slightly higer prices then there where no shortage. By not increasing prices or limit number of items it have caused unnecessesary stress in our society in Sweden. The supermarket store owners says that there is no supply problem because they lack items, they just can’t deliver goods to the stores fast enough.

I have listened to both sides of limiting items or not and it is hard to know what is best. @Antifragile makes a good point about it causing panic but then again how does one stop one from clearing the shelves right now.

Personally i saw my lockdown coming a month in advance and each week with my regular shopping I spent 25% more, focusing on canned goods. I did this so as to not have to go out as much. That made me a reserve for about 2-3 weeks which is slowly dwindling as I now shop once every two weeks.

In my regular life I always like to have a reserve of food but had gone through it intentionally as I recently moved.

For those that did not prepare I can understand their fear but also think they should respect others by self-limiting their purchases.

I cannot make up my mind if it should be forced or not.

There won’t be a problem in two weeks. As one of the articles you mentioned, there is not a supply shortage problem, it is the hoarders that is the problem that makes empty shelves some days.

Today the shelves where re-supplied and there was no problem finding the best brands of rice, spagetti, minced meat and so on. Some days the zombie hoard hits the super markets hard but a few days later it is almost back to normal. The problem right now is hoarders, not supply as one of your articles mentioned.

Price elasticity gives that with a significant short term price increase it will decrease the demand if there is no real crisis of shortage as of current time.

It is time to man up and face this together and don’t create unnecessary shortage for our fellow friends.
