I didn’t even notice your previous post

Don’t worry, can’t see them all and you were not the main target. ![]()
What I meant was that, basically, you wrote about the same thing in your post as I did, namely about how Autonomi works with a large number of users and the potential experiences resulting from this fact ![]()
I thought you had some different spin on it, so I didn’t notice that it was that similar but thanks for explaining.
I just had a simple question.
I’m sure there’s a relevant Henry Ford quote for this somewhere ![]()
You mean the one: “You can make cars in any colour you like, provided that it is black”? ![]()
I think it’s the “faster horses” quote ![]()
![]()
hmmmmmm.. ![]()
More like:
“If I had asked the people what they wanted, they would have said: ‘Faster horses.’ “
Henry Ford didn’t come up with Donkeys on Skateboards though. ![]()
In fact, his innovation wasn’t even the car, it was the production line and a massive drop in cost which lead to a mass market and cars for everyone.
His innovation was about ease of adoption.
In case anyone didn’t understand, @JimCollinson was most likely referring to the quote:
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said - faster horses.”
The problem is that this quote is a myth – Ford never said it. The earliest attribution of this statement to Ford dates back to 1999, more than 50 years after his death. Quote Investigator and the Henry Ford Museum have confirmed that the above quotation does not appear in any sources from that era.
However, if we were to translate this quote into the answer Jim most likely had in mind, paraphrasing the original, it would be:
"“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said - native token.” ![]()
Therefore, my reply paraphrased a well-known quote by H. Ford as follows:
You mean the one: “Any native token the customer wants, as long as it’s regulated token.”? ![]()
The thing behind the quote in question is that it says people would just want a better version of what they already have.
But native token is innovative and not existing, so in fact that quote would not be referring to native but to better version of the current payment system. Be it better credit card processing or better blockchain processing
I understand what you’re saying, but you should read my question to Jim about whether they are researching opinions and asking what people want (or more specifically, what they don’t want). All of the responses I received from internet users, including those quoted from Discord, always boil down to simplicity and usability — that’s been my experience.
Jim suggested that if the team asked people what they want, they would say they want a better blockchain, but I suggest that they would say they want simple, useful solutions, i.e. NT.
Thanks for replying.
Do you think paymasters is on the priority list? Currently, people still have to buy ETH for gas when paying fees. This is still impossible: run node → get tokens → upload data.
Isn’t it that gas fees will be reduced only for multi-chunk uploads, and small files / metadata gains are not changing very much? They will be a majority of network’s usage, like in Friends or Colony.
What is the reason for that? Is there a concern, that node runners may not want it, or it could hurt the network?
Paymasters in development, and on its way into test ![]()
Small files should still only be about 1c in ETH though, after the latest changes: On the Roads with Dave – One Year in the World of the Autonomous Internet - #66 by Dimitar
Given a file is made up of 3 chunks, each up to 4MB, that’s actually the same price up to about 12MB.
Using a file container (such as tarchive) means that any update to a group of files up to 12MB will still only cost 1c. That’s pretty good, tbh.
Ofc, for stuff that changes a lot, scratchpads may still be preferable (EDIT: as free, unlimited, updates with these). They still only cost 1c in ETH, IIRC, with 10x higher AUTONOMI token cost (which is dust cost, atm).
To earn 1c from running nodes shouldn’t be too tricky. I think running 50 nodes would deliver 1c or so per day. Either that or you just buy a tenner’s worth and forget about it for a few months (depending on daily spend, ofc).
The cheaper, the better, of course. But getting the numbers closer to negligible will go a long way.
One question remains (and maybe others) which is how these changes will affect upload performance in other ways, particularly speed. Native currency might still be preferable there, or not, we don’t know.
Things have improved immensely in recent months in various areas so we will I hope be looking into speed at the protocol level too.
That I wonder as well, currently when uploading via Dave, it takes ages to get a quote and upload even a small file. Any improvements here are welcome ![]()
Yes, we’re hoping for improvements there too! Because at the moment for large uploads, you have to get quotes from nodes for each chunk… it’s a lot of chatter! But with the merkle tree batching, that number reduces as dramatically as the gas fees. So let’s see how far we can take it!
yes. as replied by Jim
yes, as replied by Traktion
yes
that’s a separated issue, and being related to Dave impl only. there is on going work to resolve it, and some improvements shall be availbe in next Dave’s release.
