Does Safecoin have to be on the OmniChain. I hope not. It is off-putting to new entrants
Safecoin will run on the SAFE-network and won’t be on any external chain. So No Omni or any other external chain.
Oh, wow. I missed that.
I have to say it. Cognitive dissonance. Can’t say that and then complain more recently that the token price isn’t reflecting technical progress.
I do hope that was just hyperbole to drive home the message that helping is paramount and contrast with the get rich quick focus that characterize so many other projects. Self interest is a real thing. History has repeatedly shown this.
Are we sure? I can easily imagine a version of safecoin like USDT backed 1 to 1 on / Omni or Erc20…
Do not worry. They know this, so we have so many ways to make money on SAFE…
Well, there is wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) on Ethereum already, but I’d definately say that is not equivalent to Bitcoin, despite being backed 1-1 by it. The way it is implemented has custodial risk. So unless the networks are trustlessly bridged, I’d say it’s clearly the case that safecoin lives on SAFE network.
If it lives on the SafeNetwork, how do you trade it?
how do you trade it if he lives on the Bitcoin Network?
The exchange has safecoin wallets…
Safecoin will run on its own chain, so to speak—so not OMNI. That being said, I’m curious as to what the plan is to facilitate existing exchanges hosting Safecoin. I had heard that at a time there were talks with Poloniex to facilitate the transition from MAID to SAFE, but I’m not sure if that was true.
I wonder to what degree the relationships are being built to enable broad(er) exchange access. It won’t be a small task, I suspect, because listing SAFE will require exchanges to learn how to integrate and manage an entirely new protocol, I think. If the groundwork isn’t lain—both in terms of relationships and UXD—then Safecoin could end up in a similar predicament as OMNI (I.e. difficult for exchanges and other third parties like hardware wallets to integrate and support).
This is true for us and a few others. IOTA is an example, but also avalanche, algorand and more. So different blockchains can use different protocols (i.e. OMNI/BTC/Eth) and some will differ in complexity. For SAFE (and other non blockchain projects) as an example then the exchange will need a client instance and probably be glad there is multisig included. I think this is a task our frontend teams will have to spend time on. Hopefully, we can create an exchange client that will make this simpler.
There were some exchanges talking to us, I think Poloniex may have been one, @nicklambert will likely have more info on that (he is on holiday right now). However things in exchanges have changed a lot in the last few years, to charging a lot to just list (regardless of integrations) and now that is also changing a little.
tl;dr Yes it is a new protocol, it will need integration work, but I suspect the challenge will be the usual political/business issues over listing which is strange. We all seem to want decentralised approaches, but exchanges want somebody to pay them to list, so the most decentralised project will by logical extension not be able to list
So yip a challenge, but one we need to tackle at the right time.
Thanks for the context!
As a species we have such a hard time overcoming our baser nature. I realize this, but I’ll never understand it. Greed is so short sited; it minimizes “the size of the pie”—realizable value—for everyone. Exchanges are making a killing on trading fees alone (to a level with which I also don’t agree). Why they think they should also gouge on listing, I’ll never get. Exchanges would provide so much more value for themselves and others if they’d do what they’re supposed to do: provide people with access to assets to acquire and trade with minimized friction.
Competition should, in course, see to this. However, requiring various licenses and regulations increases the barrier to entry.
While times were booming, exchanges were able to take a large share, as they are the gatekeepers. While I am sure they are still making good money, there isn’t such a high demand right now and there is time for competitors to establish and up their game.
To look at it in a positive way, when there are huge profits being made, it is a market signal that more of something is needed. The market signal is loud and clear with exchanges.
This is the weird thing for me. If they list a coin, they make money, but they seem to want to make more money upfront from some organisation (at the cost of not listing and getting money that way?) and that is hard. True decentralised projects fail unless they are kinda not decentralised but huge holders of the asset that can use 1% of the holdings to make their remaining 99% worth much much more. So it lends itself to more corrupt schemes that “seem” open. The greed of some projects allows them then to make more because of the greed that works to satisfy the greed of the exchanges. That all feeds the greed of the “investors” who can capitalise and that is the world as it is where each group will say their greed is correct. It is if we want cash to flow between those groups, but I really feel we want the cash to flow to many more people, governance to many more people and this is sometimes seen at odds from a more short term profit driven system that requires greed.
I am not using greed as a negative here btw (although I think it has many connotations )
Of course, all of that is greed for cash! There are other types greed such as wishing to free people, the selfish self-serving satisfaction of helping others and so on.
I recently had an off-line convo about “investors” or more accurately in my mind “stakeholders” where the latter may not meen money alone but time, effort etc. But this convo was “investor” and money. It was weird and I thought a lot about it. The suggestion was an investor becomes almost like a slave owner, I can see the thought process, but here is the weird thing from my view.
- An “investor” in maidsafe likey has less shares than I do (since sigmoid merged a few years back)
- An investor in maidsafecoins likely has less coins than I do (say)
So how do we square the slave has more “power” than the owner?
Then the next question
An investor may (tiny minority of them) then assume control over the work and actually stop it to demand attention. So the investment is to get a project to achieve its goal but the investment can be seen as justified to be used to prevent or delay that goal being met?
I have gone off track, but the greed/profit/doing good/motivation cycle seems at times very contradictory and confusing.
Perhaps the thing is to invest in stuff with massively determined people who will fight to achieve the goals knowing they will have to see around corners and withstand many uknowns.
Greed can be seen as another word for emptiness. That emptiness is a void that can never be filled. The desire to fill it is the pursuit of happiness. Happiness is a conditional emotion. The condition is to fill the void, which is impossible. I think before we set out to fill our pockets, or save the world, first we must save ourselves, hence: let go of desire. It’s better to find inner peace, then happiness. My Zen moment, cheers!
I 'm not so sure he is keeping it low. The 100BTC wall has essentially tied MAIDUSD to BTCUSD at a fixed ratio.
True, but he is also stopping maidusd from dropping as well as rising. It’s tied to BTC at this point. Correct me, but his actions are preferable to being delisted on polo due to low volume, no?
I see your point… drives all other volume away.
Not knowing the business models of the exchanges I don’t want to be too critical of them requiring money up front to list new coins. That said, I’m thinking that once Fleming/MVP is released there is a very good chance with proper marketing that MAID will really take off. Fleming as it is now being described is going to be a huge technical leap forward and could really change the perception of MAID. If MAID is making new highs then that puts the team in a much better position to negotiate with exchanges for listing SAFE when it comes out and for more exchanges to list MAID. If there is more money to be made on exchange volume they may jump at the chance to get in on the action for less or even nothing up front.
Another thought I’ve had as a purchaser of MAID is that when making an investment, either monetary, time/effort, or both, the biggest factor for success is the quality of the management team. While I realize this is a decentralized project, and it’s initial funding was a little different than a typical company in that there is a mix of investors and MAID buyers, I still think this holds. Nothing in this forum leads me to think that they have goals or an approach that is different than I would want for the long-term success in the project. I mean this both because I want a decentralized internet in and of itself and because I want to make some money off my MAID investment and eventually through SAFE farming. I think the de-focus on short-term gains in MAID via marketing is actually good in that it provides a quiet space to just plug along and get the job done. And as long as the funding is there to get to Fleming, then a lower MAID price until then just allows more people with faith in the project to get in at the lower prices. There is risk in this approach too and there are definitely potential benefits to a higher MAID price now. But I guess I’m just trying to say that in my opinion it seems that D. Irvine’s LACK of what we are terming “greed” in some of the posts above is what is going to maximize the chance of this project being massively successful, which can’t help but also drive the financials. I really think the crypto space is just crying out for something like this project and not just another blockchain variant.
I hope a large percentage of people on this forum are interested in these same goals!
Profits to help people, not profits over people!
Not sure it’s still correct in the current landscape. I understand this was the way it was done around the altcoin mania of 2017, but AFAIK Binance didn’t, for example, charge Ravencoin, Atom or Doge for their listings recently, so there is definitely hope going forward.
Getting a network of sorts out in the wild will change the perception of the project greatly. With people being able to play around with a network i envisage the community to start growing exponentially. More users means more devs, more devs means more users and so on and so forth. This will bring the exchanges onboard organically eventually.
It’s not currently helpful IMO to Maidsafe to keep talking about the exchange situation, we’ve got places to buy and sell if we need to for now. We really need them to focus on this crucial stage of development and not to waste resources/time thinking about maidsafecoin. Lets keep their attention on the end goal, the network. We’ve seen how much progress the team are currently making with everyone now pulling in the same direction - you can almost feel the enthusiasm from the employee’s comments in the weekly updates.
We’ve seen employees such as @JimCollinson making edits to ‘Tony’s Blog’ at 3.42 AM!! Such dedication, much wow
We’ve seen the astonishing pace the frontend mobile browser has progressed this week by a man seemingly possessed, @ravinderjangra. We’ve seen some great marketing material by way of the high level walkthrough videos and the easy to understand Medium articles. We continue to read some fascinating insights by community members such as @oetyng, @tfa, @riddim, @mav etc on network simulations.
It’s the most exciting period i’ve witnessed for the safe network, and i’ve been a lurker since the crowdale
It begs the question for marketing; is there anything else we as a community could/should be doing to help?
