Community co-op separate forum

Perhaps, but until then we can try to make this place as useful as possible

Hmm for me every centralized place is a risk. Do you feel there’s more risk of being shut down by Autonomi, than by Codeberg?

I like the RetroShare solution, that @TylerAbeoJordan used for the StorPunk project. Or some fediverse project, preferably zot/nomad based, my favorite being Hubzilla.

How about a simple forum based on dweb? Should be pretty straightforward to set up

If a feature in the forum feels missing it needs to be implemented :man_shrugging:
Would be much cooler than setting up some server based solution again that will stick around forever…

I love the idea. Dogfooding in its finest.

Why dweb would be needed here?

Because that could be set up in an early version probably within a day with help of some ai (and stealing from existing dweb apps) … Writing a native app will take time

Edit:
On top of that dweb apps are versioned - when one Version has a flaw you can easily go back to last version, it’s platform independent because of browser technology, updates can be rolled out frequently and comfortable to every user,…

I think there’s a lot of good arguments for using dweb… (in contrast to e.g. a native rust app)

Retroshare allows threaded forums, mail, messaging, files, etc. And it’s easy to get going, just install, and turn it on. You can use Tor or non-tor nodes (it has tor built in), but if using tor nodes, then everyone has to use tor nodes to communicate - might as well as no point in having less security.

Screenshot of the forum tab of retroshare (clipped to avoid showing identities):

You connect by sharing key of starting node with others.

Me:

Retroshare over Tor:

Retroshare uses circles for managing groups. So you can manage any number of forums and subforums and be a part of any that you are connected to (you need to be added to the circle the forum belongs to.

I thought this forum was community ran and paid for already?

Definitely. Autonomi have said they plan to do this to the dev forum, which is the alternative for this, several times and that is still their last stated position.

That’s why I gave up on it after the most recent discussion.

I only pay for the domain, the forum hosting is paid for by MaidSafe.

They do not exert any controlling pressure on the community mods though, its more they support the community forum.

We of course could pay the hosting of the forum and take it over at any time if we felt they were trying to control it.

The vote and governance thing is central to the Community effort , how does this solution handle that? I have not had time to dive in and take a look, so an honest question.

I don’t believe retroshare has polling functionality at this time. It does have a plugin system and developing a polling plugin would likely? be relatively easy. I’ll look into this when I have some time.

I suggest making this forum better rather that starting new. This forum has been losing steam and is supposed to be community centric. It would benefit from renewed vitality. So create a topic or mods could even start a new category if need be.
