Detailed Summary of Aug 13, 2024 Discord Stage
Rusty: What have you been up to? You’ve been very quiet until a few days ago.
Bux: I’ve been focused on two key areas:
-
Launching the Network: This involves planning what we need to get the network operational and how we can best achieve that. I’m open to changes and resolutions to ensure we reach our goals.
-
Building a True Network: By definition, a network is “a group or system of interconnected people or things.” This isn’t something we can accomplish as individuals; we need groups, existing customers, and audiences. These groups usually come with data, which is crucial for node operators and, by extension, for generating rewards.
Rusty: Can you share any details about the partnerships you’re working on? Any leaks?
Bux: It’s tempting, but I want to respect our partners and the scale of what we’re building. Announcements need to be made thoughtfully, with well-planned communications to effectively show people what we’re building. There’s a lot of noise in the space—CoinGecko reported in April that 5,300 new tokens are launched every day. That’s a lot of hype without much substance. In contrast, Crunchbase data shows that the Web3 sector has attracted over $100 billion in investment. By 2025, 90% of top internet applications are expected to be Web3-enabled, with over 1 million daily active users and a user base exceeding 100 million globally. Web3 privacy-focused projects have gained over 5 million active users, and decentralised identity solutions have onboarded over 50 million users.
Rusty: Let’s address the elephant in the room. What’s happening with home networks, and what are we doing to fix it?
Bux: We’re focusing on three main things: triage, focus, and timeline. The investigation into home nodes is ongoing, and we’re waiting on some pull requests (PRs) in libp2p. Another part of the issue is excessive bandwidth usage caused by unnecessary data replication.
Rusty: Many people are curious about the October launch. What are your thoughts and plans?
Bux: The October launch isn’t just a one-time event; it’s ongoing. Two key elements will be present:
-
Data Upload: This focuses on decentralised storage, which is central to our project.
-
Payment for Hosting Data: This will involve partner data and integrations with applications that will help increase network use and visibility.
Regarding quantum security, I want to clarify that our encrypted chunks are “information theoretically secure.” This means that even with unlimited computing power and time, the security of these chunks cannot be broken because they don’t hold enough information to be decoded in any way. This makes them quantum-proof. However, the network itself, being probabilistic rather than deterministic (similar to AI or large language models), is more complex and harder to quantify in terms of security.
Rusty: What happens after the 12 weeks of Wave 1? What’s the plan going forward?
Bux: We’ll need Wave 1 participants to test other aspects of the network. These original participants are the right ones to continue this testing, and we’ll incentivize them to do so.
Rusty: The team has been working hard on updates. One of them is on the launchpad. Here is a leak: posted in autonomi-news
Rusty: What would you say to new people joining the project? Why should they stick around for the beta and beyond?
Bux: I encourage them to think beyond Web3, crypto, and blockchain. Consider what the internet should look like in the future. Given what’s happening in the world, this technology has immense power that has yet to be fully realised. I’d rather see it used for the benefit of the people rather than against them.
Rusty: For those new people, what makes Autonomi better than a local storage solution?
Bux: As I mentioned earlier, Autonomi combines the control of local storage with the connectivity of a network, putting users in control rather than relying on platforms or single sign-on (SSO) systems. It’s important to note that 95% of adults are now familiar with this technology, and 46% use VPNs, while 93% of organisations use VPNs. The internet was originally a product of DARPA, and our use of it is essentially a byproduct. Autonomi offers a way to regain control.
