I think Neo did some math on this. It doesn’t look like any one node operator has enough nodes to do so at the moment. But moreover if this actually happens I suspect it’s a good thing. This is a learning process. In the end nothing will kill Autonomi.
Bugger!!! I was hoping it was an inside job.
The scale and organisation of it does bother me - quite apart from the draining of ANTs that I (selfishly) feel should have been distributed amongst the community.
That being the case, I have to call again for RandomRewards to urgently be cut in half as a minimum and those saved funds used to motivate up/downloading.
Note also that this well-organised intervention coincides with the appearance of new folks active both here and on Discord who may not have the best interests of the project at heart.

I tried this and have to report that this is only true if you cook it first.
You can thank me later.
Very good point.
The 5m nodes are all the more surprising given that the X post from Autonomi about the number of nodes has 6 replies, 17 re-posts and 36 likes.
good improvement coming… to get rid of some of the choke at boot?
looks like it…
OK so what software/apps can we actually use on Autonomi? How does Joe Blog store and retrive data? I only see info on how to set up a node on the main autonomi page (which otherwise looks great, and does a fantastic job of explaining/selling the network to Joe as long as he doesnt want to actually use it which sucks when he just bought a load of ANT he can’t spend on storage).
And I was 4 of these reposts
Thx 4 the update Maidsafe devs
vires in numeris
Keep hacking super ants

Right now, very little, but that was the point of releasing the network and API docs, to get builders to build.

I think that’s a valid criticism, I expressed it myself in the past. I would guess the devs are working to correct some bugs and are otherwise waiting for everything to be stable before publishing documentation on this once they feel confident in the network. That being said, you can go to their GitHub, download the Ant CLI and use it to upload/download files, with some caveats. Large files are currently failing. I was able to upload a ~300MB file, but that’s about as large as I can currently get working. That seems to be a consistent experience for everyone from what I’ve read.
Thanks for the clarification. There used to be the safe browser (or was it beaker browser?) years back. Do you know what happened to that as it seemed like that was the crucial element to this project but I’ve not seen any word about that or any other network browserr since they switched its name to Autonomi. If thats not being worked on anymore then it seems it could be a long time before we actually get anything we can browse like an internet. Browsers are hard to build.
Can somebody explain to me:
How can data be redundant when somebody controls 70-90% of nodes (suposedly)? If this entity has the ability to shut these down in an instant, isn’t that an attack vector for the network? Or is the spread of chunks so sophisticated by design this is not an issue?
thanks for clarifying
the copies should be widely spread. but a fast spreading outage of 70 to 90 % of the network would certainly be a problem.
I’m content that we’re on a very good track. The size of the network is impressive. Getting larger scale real downloads will be good and will be a proving ground for debugging this and that on the road to true stability and functionality.
Solidifying the API, getting good documentation in the hands of devs, allowing GUI interfaces to the network is going to be key to moving to the more public involvement.
I’m hoping to see some functional examples by the MaidSafe team as such should really kick it off, whenever the team thinks it’s a ripe time. On the edge of my seat to see what happens next!
The browser project is dead, and as far as I know isn’t coming back, but community members have already created solutions to browse Autonomi served web pages. See the AntTP topic for one example. I don’t think the other project has been officially released yet.
This is the reason I asked posed the question about number of nodes vs concentration of ownership.
I think the solution is for all the “good guys,” like most people here, to do our best to run as many nodes as we can. Pretty sure MaidSafe has a goodly share of that high number which will be scaled down as network participation gets more thoroughly decentralized.
how is the team adressing tests in regards to redundancy? And what have prior tests shown in regards to when large node ownership/shutdowns become an issue?
What makes you say that?
My understanding is that work on Dave is on hold until more pressing issues are dealt with.
Or did I miss something? - always possible…
Yes if we want to get more attention then lets give Autonomi a helping hand on X, i like and repost every single post i see
But what if the “bad guys” are running more nodes than the “good guys”? The 1 attos testnets had the fun factor, that noderunners suddenly don’t have thousands of MAIDs to dump and only the “good guys” would run them. Not that it matters that thousands of MAIDs are dumped, makes it cheapers for newbs to buy.
It’s not even a problem if we loose 51% or the entire Network, the baby falls, tries and walks up again. If anything we should always try to break the Network first so that it hardens. There is not one video tutorial how to get a node running, upload, download etc.
Maybe most important critics should do PR, because we should be grateful for the devs taking us this far and not expect them to solve all problems. New ants will come, but it’s on us to make ants meet…
