SAFE Network Logo Competition - Final Designs

It’s hard to have strong opinions about logos… which prompted a thought that simpler the better.

Perhaps a pearl would do just as well?..

  • it’s opaque, representing privacy
  • it’s long lasting; tough; and hard enough to crack a tooth, representing security
  • it’s from the ocean, representing freedom…
  • and I’ve not seen another good use of pearl as logo!

I liked it straight off the bat when I saw it yesterday.
Simple is great, which is why I suggested a text based logo but with little support. I hope it’s in the final.

Edit. Dare I suggest it arrived after the diamond ant I post higher up. Uncanny resemblance.

Glad to see something more modern and in my eyes more interactive than all the more static designs. Not sure what exactly was asked of the designers but most of them were too simple for me. It’s not finished if you ask me but it’s going into the right direction.

This is my favorite so far.

Looking at all the boring options, I think I’ll have to fork the Launcher and theme it with that knitted Pikachu :smirk_cat: (also, sorry for being critical without actually contributing anything of value…)

A logo can be anything as long as it’s appealing. People will forget about all the clever ideological references after a week, but they are less likely to forgive if it’s ugly.

Fifi the saucy French maid hugging a knitted pikachu to (or with it wedged into) her low cleavage. Yep. Unforgettable.

Agree 100%

Here too. Shame we haven’t seen more designers play with text only.

I’m more partial towards Mikuru-chan, but I get the idea :joy_cat:

I had to look it up, but now I see.

This discussion is not as frivolous as it sounds. But since there is almost nothing new under the sun I did a search and found the OS-tans. Hilarious.

If a Mikuru-chan alike had a Scottish accent, I think it might actually be the germ of greatness, as a narrator.

You know there is a brand of car batteries called Marshall? Their logo is a little cartoon “marshall”. Many, many years ago that was the character in an animated tv ad for the brand. The little marshall would say “if your battery’s actin’ ornery, holler for a Marshall!” and then he would hop on a large battery and drive away. Very memorable!

So silly-seeming cartoon mascots do work.

Please stay far far away from storj look

all are good, 110 is the best

It sure is. See if paying for and using a suitable font gets you there as well.

When it comes to that, an amazing amount of work done by Luc Devroye:

TYPE DESIGN, TYPOGRAPHY, TYPEFACES AND FONTS:
An encyclopedic treatment of type design, typefaces and fonts.
This site is also known as ON SNOT AND FONTS.

Sample:

Hexagonal typefaces

[Headline set in Hexahedra (2012, Riccardo Sabatini)]

Decypher that one here:

Abuse of ‘Adamas’ and Constellation’:

Using typeface ‘Plamo’ by applying a tiny bit of ‘WordArt’:

So examples of just using what already exists and the licensed use of a selected font could be very affordable.

As a last attempt at playing with text only a proposal to outsmart Google Search:

This is actually a refreshing idea, why not a cute mascot as the logo?

No thanks. Dumb & Dumber. Its tough enough - and very expensive - job to be taken seriously.

Well, Linux has Tux and BSD has beastie. And it hasn’t been a hindrance to their adoption.

I cannot argue these are not successful - relatively speaking. What you cant tell me is if they would have been more successful with a different approach. Maidsafe is not about fuzzy toys and to use a fuzzy toy to represent Maidsafe would be suicide. I see that as playing loose with the millions of potential new users and its a risk not worth taking. Going forward, Maidsafe really needs to hit a home run with every move.

Actually, conceptually it is not bad.
You can hit homeruns with anything as long as it is well executed, as long as the basics are respected: simple, easily identifiable and unique. In fact, it could be a nice source to start designing a stylized, minimalist, abstract figures that could end up becoming a nice logo at the end of such process.
A good example that I like for its simplicity is Kraken.com’s logo, these kind of designs are deceptively simple, but are the hardest ones to come about. That seemingly stupid looking logo, must have gone through several iterations to get to that point. Also, it must be highlighted the creativeness of going away from the “Bit-something” unintentional naming convention that inundates the space due to lack of creativity.
Choosing “Kraken” as the name of a bitcoin exchange is something totally unrelated and yet catchy, this is a great example of lateral thinking, which is also not easy to do.

In fact one of the most recognizable logos is Twitter’s bird, or the Space Invader’s arcade logos.
Animal based logos/mascots can be very effective as it elicits empathy.
As I said, it is not a bad idea at all to move away from the obviousness, as long as it can be easily recognizable and unique.

It is very common to get stuck on the linearity of thoughts and be logically trapped. Most if not all Bitcoin Exchange must have brainstormed about their brand names, and they most definitely threw words that are related to that space: “finance, bitcoin, economy, exchange, technology, blockchain, coin, money, payment” and its values “safe, fast, secure, decentralized, etc…”
And very fast it became saturated with boring names: COINbase, BITpay, itBIT, BITstamp, BTC-e, COINdesk, BITgo, BITreserve, etc…

It is really not bad at all to try to think outside of the box, in fact it is more likely to hit homeruns thinking out of the box.

That is an argumentum ignorantium fallacy (oh, Latin, break out the smelling salts): responding that your opponent can’t prove that something isn’t true.

Examples of very memorable cute mascots used by successful firms have been presented and more can easily be found.

You should stick to what you can actually do, such as pats on the back or admonitions to ignore people who disagree with you.

Now, let’s see: a cute anime girl character in a school uniform (tartan skirt) and scottish accent discussing the technical virtues of SAFEnet. It is different enough to be “arresting” in one sense of the word while staying short of the other sense.
