Exactly…where are the digital assets? We were on a promise that they would be put on to Github…but all I see is boring stuff like Crust, Rust …reads like a disused bakery
Sometimes we can only see the trees. What the ants thing represents is well understood by people here but to newcomers? IMHO we already have the best tag and logo in the space. Keep it SAFE. Keep it simple and eye catching One name for all. Let people choose which bit of SAFE interests them, Safecoin, Safenetwork, Safeapp etc. My ten cents worth on this one.
There has to be a point at which control of the SAFE brand transtions away from Maidsafe and they are free to work on their own success as a company.
What that transition is or if crowdsale funds have been allocated to make a transition is unknown.
I believe we have the tech, but Ethereum for example has the snap and zizzle…how do we get that snap and sizzle? If we continue down this Network focused path I predict were in for a long slow ride.
If Maidsafe are not bold enough to get behind Safecoin with a snappy campaign and conference circuit (lets face it, their exhausted and undermanned) then the opportunity is there for a consortium to pick it up and run.
If there is crowdsale money left or investor money coming in, then it could be made available to drive an effort. After all it’s the same project and an oppurtunity to see what approach works best in the real world.
If there is a body of AppDevs out there that feel that a focus on Safecoin is best for their bottom line, then they should make themselves known.
There could be magic behind the curtain that is set to dazzle us all, but going on this sudden urgency for a Safenetwork branding that seems fanciful.
I fully agree. We already have a professionally designed, democratically elected symbol. Sure, it was meant for safecoin but if you think about it: it’s just an S - could stand for anything.
No need to re-invent the wheel here and no need to make it more complicated with too many symbols. Use the Safecoin logo for the network too, Keep it simple
SAFE is a standalone network before it’s anything else. Without the network there is no COIN or APP’s or free beer in Troon. The SAFE logo can be the same across all mediums but “emphasis” needs to change depending on where it it used. Apple has a single logo and also the benefit of history. The (branded) tech space really just consisted of IBM, MS and Apple… today there are 100’s of thousands of companies fighting for attention and influential bloggers & influential social media platforms endlessly rating and trolling new technologies.
SAFE is a Commons. SAFE Network is the Secure Access for Everyone Commons. SAFE C, The S is the two interlocked C(s) or the union of two C(s) or the implied union of at least two commons or C(s.) It is the inter-commons. SAFE is a human bridge, a stable platform that one human can use to reach another.
SAFE is a new democracy, one that can’t be bribed/sponsored.
Just to keep everyone in the loop. The competition team are meeting tomorrow afternoon to start the process. The team is made up by people that put themselves forward, they are: @melvin, @mvanzyl, @we_advance (please confirm attendance Tim ), @frabrunelle, @Krekc and myself.
The purpose of having this small group is to:
Establish a design brief and competition time scale, rules, process and platform for the competition and communicate this with the forum
Incorporate community feedback and amend where required
Market the competition
Communicate with prospective designers
Short list the entries
Provide a short list to the community and conduct a poll
Announce the winner
The deliverables from this meeting is to discuss and agree the competition time scale, rules, process and platform, and to start looking at the brief. We’ll be back in touch early next week with an update.
Did I mention that this proposed rebranding is not a good idea?
It will lead to more confusion, not less
Maidsafe’s Penrose Triangle logo is just fine as an identifying symbol. It always appears on cryptocurrency exchanges beside the name of Maidsafecoin, and would probably continue to be so used once Maidsafecoin is replaced by SAFEcoin. Like it or not, the coin is probably going to be the dominant association in many people’s minds.
A symbol is simply a memorable identifier, it doesn’t have to “mean” anything because it already means the thing it is attached to.
Although its “knight’s move” kind of twistiness is a nice metaphor for XOR space. It says “maths” and “crypto” better than a thousand words on a t-shirt.
The association of the coin with the network means that the symbol will come to be an identifier of the network as well as the coin, which seems fine to me.
Simple. I think that rejigging the identifier will not make the old one go away, it will just muddle matters.
EDIT: Does anyone have a substantive critique of any of any of the points I make here?
Yes we who have been following the project have become familiar and attached to Maidsafe’s penrose but it really belongs to the company. Truth is we are a drop in the ocean and are holding onto what we know. The product is not yet complete, branding needs to be done followed by marketing to the masses, the vast majority of which have no idea about any of this and as such are not able to be confused by it.
Quick update on progress from the brand competition.
I would estimate that it will take 6 weeks from today before we have a winning result. This time will be taken up by establishing the brief, soliciting community feedback, running the competition and voting.
Some of the team have analysed which platform would best suit our needs. Taking into account level of traffic, price, participation…etc… There are a few things still to clear up, but we think we have found something that will enable participation from both the community and other designers all in one place.
We have outlined some rules and the process for the competition.
We start the work of discussing and putting the brand brief in place this Friday and we’ll share this (as well as the process, platform, marketing) with you in a couple of weeks when the planning phase is complete.
99designs chosen as brand logo competition platform
After looking at several design competition platforms we are happy to announce that 99designs will be the platform used for the brand competition. Although each platform has its pros and cons 99designs stood out because it has the largest pool of designers (1.25M), high design standards and each project typically receives a large amount of submissions.
We will be opting for the Platinum package ensuring that the best designers that 99designs has to offer will work on our project. Together with 99designs we have worked out a way for community members to enter the competition. To join the competition you will have to register on 99designs as a designer, but you won’t need to meet the Platinum designer requirements to join the competition as a community member. More details on this will follow once the competition goes live.
What’s next?
We are currently working on a Brand Wheel for the SAFE Network. We are making good progress and once we are finished we will translate the results of the Brand Wheel into the design brief format used on the 99designs competition platform. Once we reach this point, we will ask the community for feedback on both the Brand Wheel and the design brief that will be used on 99designs. At that time, we will also be conducting a poll to establish which strapline the community believe best encapsulates the SAFE Network.
