I definitely think best case if we can win the SAFE battle that’s what we should stick with (I think SAFE Network and all things SAFE are great branding). SAFE$ or $$AFE for the coin is slick too. I like the idea that in a few years people would probably be discussing SAFE dollars along with the US dollar, etc. Despite saying the $ represents “coin” I think many people would think “dollar”. Not a bad association and many other countries than the US have dollars. Probably can’t actively promote that, though, or big gov may wake up and take notice.
It’s an expensive proposition because:
Think about the time, energy, and money that went into every web design, collateral design, event, video, published article, social media post, etc. in support of Safecoin and the SAFE Network, then multiply that exponentially to recoup years of built momentum in a world where marketing spend is already limited. Without a strongly resourced rebrand, MaidSafe and the SAFE Network run the risk of dipping into obscurity as a confused market simply chooses to ignore what it can’t easily follow. For example, look at how hard its been to get the number of people following and interacting with the SAFE Network reddit page to the level that the MaidSafe page had.
I do agree that it would be easiest to just slightly alter the name of Safecoin, but if it’s widely different, then the name (and messaging) of the SAFE Network must be updated too to ensure consistency and mitigate confusion. That’s no small task.
Up to this point the public exposure and discussion have mostly been about the Safe Network. Not much to untangle with Safecoin should the need arise to change the name. The closer launch gets the more problematic the timing of any name change gets, though.
I have thought about it … I’ve done that sort of work several times launching my own projects over the years and am working on one even now … so I do know …
I’m not advocating for this lightly - but I really don’t think some of you are considering the long run consequences of going with what we got.
In then end, I’m a pragmatist - if we stick with what we got, then fine … but I would hope that people here don’t let their personal attachments get in the way of thinking rationally about all the consequences … and at least consider alternatives before shrugging the shoulders and moving along.
Replacing S with $ is not a solution imo. It’s even more confusing, because you pronounce it in the same way and then you have to explain it’s written with the dollar sign. No
So in case we lose the fight for the Safecoin registration let’s start to brainstorm for the best alternatives to the “safecoin” term. Let’s keep the -safe-
Like Bitsafe, safebit, safechunk or…?
Let’s make a list
There have been a few already above … maybe just keep proposing ideas and in a week or so one of us will compile all of the suggestions into a poll.
Ultimately of course it’s up to the Maidsafe team to act on it or not. But we can express our opinions and maybe they’ll act on it.
I personally like safebit. Btw these are some synonyms of bit:
atom, crumb, dribble,unit, grain, granule,molecule…
@dirvine gave this one a like:
What do others think?
I like this one far and away better than the other proposed alternatives I’ve seen floating around. The STACKS ticker is also not being used.
Was thinking about safecoin name alternatives and the word saffron came to mind. It also fits well with a farming analogy.
Another nice artistic similarity is that the flower itself has a hexagonal shape much like the safe network logo.
So I would propose an official spelling of the word as either the generic:
SAFFRON
Or an alternate spelling :
SAFERON
With the alternative spelling we can continue to use “safe”, “safes”, “safer” or “safers” as shorthand. The market ticket symbol could be SAFE, SAFR, or SAFER.
And if you don’t like any of those, there’s always “SAFE-A-RONI”.
Thought I’d add a new one (mentioned in wrong thread the other day, so reposting here) –
“Netcoin”
… surprisingly, it’s not taken yet. I know peeps don’t like the “coin” part, but seems like it would just get abbreviated to “nets” anyway … plus it’s compatible with the milli, micro, pico, etc. e.g. millinets, micronets, piconets.
Actually, looking again, even simply “net” appears to be open on coinmarketcap.
I actually really like netcoin… it fits with SAFEnetwork and we’re replacing the internet. Broad yet descriptive. Good thinking @TylerAbeoJordan wonder what others think.
Don’t get me wrong though, I’d rather have Safecoin but netcoin isn’t a bad alternative.
I don’t think it’s a bad idea. I imagine more people would just refer to it as netcoin/s as opposed to nets. I would, however, just personally prefer to see the whole coin thing avoided if at all humanly possible.
Could always say “netcash”
