edit: I got it. thanks
The campaign has now closed! Thanks to everyone who contributed! Many individual supporters went way beyond the call of duty and contributed significantly more than the suggested 10$. That was awesome! In total we raised 1243$US + 0.21371227BTC (~75$US at the current exchange rate) for a total of 1300$US!
To be frank, I had no clear expectation about how much money we could raise that way so we settled for an amount that seemed reasonable to keep us going for the other lectures, even though it might not fully cover the time we spent. The amount you guys contributed is significant enough though that producing these lectures becomes a reasonable alternative for me compared to taking a teaching assistantship position for random courses at McGill. And it is much more satisfying to know that the lectures are going to be free for everyone to watch on YouTube and hopefully will contribute to a better collective understanding of the SAFE technologies. Everyone can now watch the edited version of Lecture 1 here:
In terms of money usage, Francis’s part will help him pay his rent, as all contribution he is currently making both to the SAFE Pod in Montreal, for organizing events, editing the lectures, and supporting the funding campaigns, as well as managing the various online platforms we are using (Discourse, Slack, etc.) are made on a volunteer basis.
As for me, I will be using my share to fund a tour of Europe during the next semester to network with researchers from other institutions and find collaborators to solve problems and publish in academic conferences about some of the core problems underlying decentralized networks used for distributed storage and computation. There seems to be many ideas behind the SAFE Network that would benefit from a thorough evaluation and being distilled to their essence to make them available to the research community for further improvement, and independent evaluation in other systems. That should help build trust towards the system, and iron out bugs and problems as soon as possible, so that everyone can rely on the network. As I will be touring, I hope to give those lectures in the various institutions I will be visiting, and I intend to continue producing more! @frabrunelle and I will be figuring out the details of the logistics in the next weeks.
Also, stay tuned for Lecture 2 next week, hopefully, we will officially launch the second crowd-funding campaign at the same time we will live stream it, so contributions should be made easier!
Thanks to all again, it is great to be part of this community.
Erick
If you want to download the same video that I uploaded to Youtube for Lecture 1 (2.62 GB), you can download it via KickassTorrents or Internet Archive.
This is a good idea, even for search juice as it’s seeded to other p2p sites. Would be a good strategy for all maidsafe.net videos also.
