Hardware Wallet support

@joshuef @bochaco

From git hub I see that there is ongoing work implementing ledger hardware Wallet support for safe

It’s fantastic that hardware Wallet support is getting implemented. is there any plan to also support Trezor or should I invest in a ledger for when launch comes ?

Pretty sure both are in progress but I think it would be good to get a pros and cons comparison from existing owners (also wrt Omni MAID and eMAID).

Is this not more about for when we transcend MAID and EMAID and start to play with SNT on the actual network?

I’m hopeful for Trezor support as I already own one as many other forum members do.

The only thing that slightly puts me off getting a ledger for SNT was that from the last firmware update I read it can export the private key online and that ledgers code is not open source.

Id be interested in what people’s opinions are on ledger ?

The primary issue is SNT, but until holder’s convert general usefulness will remain relevant so I put MAID and eMAID in brackets.

Just figured out what wrt means :joy:

I was thinking it was something to do with https://openwrt.org/

I have worked with Trezor One, Trezor T and also with Leger S and X. I like Trezor little bit more, but Ledger is not bad either.
That controversial option on Ledger is about risk management. Do you consider more likely that you loose your keys or that they loose them? I don´t use this feature, but I believe may be useful for some people and safe them their money.

I like the idea of the feature but being non open source and having the ability to send out the private key makes me a bit apprehensive of ledger.

If safe goes to the moon would you protect your private key with a ledger?

Would you prefere to use a Trezor or another method ?

I’ll probably get a ledger for testing with a test net as soon as it’s supported if I can’t use a Trezor.

I think I’d use open source software, like MyEtherWallet or equivalent that becomes compatible with SNT, on an offline computer for transaction signing, and transfer signed TXs to an online computer for transmission.

The ledger issue shows private key exports are just a malicious firmware update away, which is likely true of most / all hardware wallets, not just ledger.

I used to think the private keys on good hardware wallets were held in part of the device with the ability to sign, send signatures, and nothing else, but that is certainly not the case with Ledger, and likely not with others. So, this ledger debacle did me a favour.

Though a malicious official firmware update is unlikely, it’s a risk I’d rather not take, so for large sums a DIY solution with offline computer seems more secure, though a little less convenient.

These are my current thoughts, but I’m open to learning and figuring out a better way, as I expect an offline computer still has other risks that I’m unaware of, and may not even be an option for SNT at launch.

For SNT though I am not sure how much help a hardware wallet is.

Everything is stored in your account record. Basically the hardware wallet is whatever computer you access your Safe Network account from.

I would be more looking for a tiny computer that you can carry with you that can run the Safe Client and execute the Safe Wallet commands.

Rather than the hardware carrying your keys you just have standard software on it and enter your credentials when you want to access your Safe Wallet which is on the Safe Network not your hardware. That way there is no way anyone can steal your keys from the hardware since nothing is stored on the hardware that is different from anyone elses hardware.

I am not sure how the final implementation will look like, but Safe account is going to be multisig by default. This may mean that Ledger hack or something similar will not be enough steal your SNT. We will see.

As usual maybe I was over simplifying things in my head.

Ledger = private key = access to all coins.

Hopefully this is the case

@aatonnomicc atm, we’ve been looking at ledger first. If it’s all viable, we’ll of course make an effort to support as much as we’re able to. :+1:

Looks like Santa is getting a backdated order for a ledger

After my recent trezor ordeal, ledger is in my good graces.

There are so many new options out there though, but I find it hard to take the plunge with these new players, for all I know they may be better. Has anyone tried the new wave of competitors?
