In the end it’s a question of quality and what you’d want. People gotta eat. Anything open source and not making money can take a lot of time. It’s not just programming. It’s replying to issues, debugging, planning, helping, documenting.
I think selling apps before they are created is putting the cart before the horse.
I’m with you, I’m not sure it works for ‘apps’ in general. Especially if they could feasibly be monetised on the network.
But there is plenty of open source software that you’ll be using right now that the developer won’t necessarily have been paid for. It’s that and guides / documentation etc that I think could be useful. If we can encourage development and enhance the ecosystem, it can only help the network.
Or any app that perhaps people think is needed for the network, but perhaps there’s not so much incentive to build?
Non of which is to say that this is needed, there is the CEP…

Just a follow up on this, I ended up making the app myself (for free :P) On my Github now if anyone wants it (“UPLOADTEST”)
Had a few people work on it but nobody was very happy with the $50 so might double or triple next time to get the apps made.
Can’t learn without making mistakes. Although I’ve had great help for very cheap on there before so it definitely depends. Can get lucky. 180 countries on there

Oha, I didn’t see that coming!
I haven’t read everything, but most of the debate, so here’s my thoughts for now:
I like the idea to have some kind of little brother/sister program for the CEP. A way where we as the community can share, talk about and eventuelly work on solutions for small apps or services we would like to see on the safenet. The money would be an incentive, but in no way meant as a compensation for the work. Maybe more like money for drinks and food and power you need to work on the app.
We could vote on which apps we want to see the most and whoever is interested in working on an app can oficially work on it and gets the money for it. If more than one person wants to work on it - great! It’s more likely to be finished and may have more features - cause people could work together on it. (I don’t know if that’s feasible with different programming languages and so on, but as it’s supposed to be open source anyways, working together might just work!)
(edit) I think it shouldn’t come with any “contract” or so, and no obligation to finish anything. Just open source. It’s not supposed to be a job where you earn money. (/edit)
Why do I like the idea so much? Because I have an app idea of my own that I always wanted to pitch (for someone else to program it - because I can’t do anything ;)! But I thought that everybody’s too busy to work on it anyways. But maybe I was just too uncertain of the response.

Yeah and they gave me 1 BTC to incentivize as many small open source SAFE app projects as possible (accounting), so if anyone organizes or creates something useful they’re eligible for some of that also!

Personally I liked the proposal as long as they were small, realistic, useful apps that were worth it for the developer and useful on the network. I hope to see this get more positive feedback and interest.

It might work, but thinking about myself when was developing for a living, I would probably prefer to work on my own pet projects (freedom to do things in my own timescale, my way, and to drop them if I want), unless I’m being paid properly for my time.
So I’m not sure money for drinks will create the incentive you need for what you have in mind. I’m not saying don’t try, just giving my explanation for what we’ve seen so far.
From my experience of trying to get people together to work on SAFEpress, and the other open source project I know people from (remoteStorage), I think you need at least one person who can drive it, the main designer and developer who is capable of doing the difficult bits and will just get on with it, while also sharing their vision, going out and talking about it. With that, you can attract a team, if you’re lucky to be doing something that inspires others to want to see it happen.
Otherwise, I think you need to be able to pay rewards that are worthwhile. Maidsafe has attracted both for building the network, but with the apps, I think people like to work on pet projects that interest them, or work in a more professional basis.

Or they live in the many countries where this $200 is more than a few months worth of income.
But yeah for the relatively small amount of people in the west, who want lots of money, then this can just add financial incentive to get the writers blocks out of the way and finish their hobby apps

I tend to agree with you on this. As the idea of SAFE gets more and more adopters worldwide, a bounty of usd 200 is a good sum especially for students and young ppl of South East Asia. I think Maidsafe Team did a good job to visit the region recently, although most in the region don’t put high priority (yet!) on the importance of privacy & freedom etc, SAFE with its “disruptive nature” would naturally level out the playing field somewhat between the big boys and the rest, which will be a good incentive for a lot of people and enterprise to adopt Safe Network. Anyway, we have to start somewhere and overall I think it’s a good idea.

@whiteoutmashups perhaps if the SafeApp foundation idea comes to fruition we could help jumpstart CIP with a big donation - I’d really like to find a way to bring our ideas together here. I really like the idea of doing contests.
On another note, I apologize again for my name confusion in the PM I sent you. I really hope you don’t feel I’ve stepped on your toes with the foundation idea, certainly not my intent at all. We can do more together and I hope we will.

Is MAIDSAFE struggling financially? I didn’t know that 
Still what we are doing could draw more attention to MAIDSAFE and may help with the valuation of the MAID token a little bit … speculation on my part I know, but it’s possible.
When do you plan on doing this before or after launch?
After would be better that way we could use the network itself to host all this and use safe coins to pay for it.
No, we are Ok for the moment. Quite balanced just now and in a good place. If we launch the Alpha’s correctly and efficiently we will have enough in the tank. This includes growing the team. Longer term then farming, core dev, possibly apps, bespoke implementations etc. we should be good. We are not like many of the ICO type projects, seemingly awash with funds. I feel we are in a good place, enough to be hungry, but not to little to make us knee jerk or panic. So a nice balance.
Ofc as a business we would always have an eye on income where possible to expand a bit faster, but for now it’s not a huge worry.
tl;dr We are Ok not too rich and not too poor, just right for launch if we are efficient.

The SafeApp Foundation idea is inching ahead, but will be months before we are ready to do an ico - at least six months … please follow our thread on the forum for updates.
