Autonomi Application Co-Op Kickoff

This is an open invitation to all who are interested in participating in the Autonomi Application Co-Op. See the related discussion here: Anyone interested in joining an Autonomi Developer Co-op or startup?

This isn’t just for app developers, we need folks of all stripes to make this happen:

  • developers
  • UI/UX designers
  • branding
  • marketing
  • project management
  • test/QA
  • documentation
  • app ideas

If you have the ability and desire to put the hours in and make an impact, we want you on board!

To start this off, anyone interested in joining this co-op, please create a post here of your expectations as noted below on Monday September 22nd or you can DM me your comments and I can post it for you on Monday. The idea here is that ideas should be from yourself personally, without bias introduced from reading others’ thoughts. Any questions or clarification posts from interested parties are also welcome in this thread.

If you’re not interested in joining the co-op and just want to post your 2 cents, this is not the thread for you. I’m all for people speaking their mind, but this is business. We’re trying to build something here, we don’t need noise, and besides, if you have input you want to give, why not join?

It doesn’t need to be a 10 page diatribe, a few paragraphs should be sufficient. From this feedback we can decide as a group how to move forward.

I’ll kick this off. Here are my thoughts on this:

Skills, areas of interest, assets:

  • Various languages: rust, python, shell scripting
  • Project management, agile workflows, spec driven development
  • Interested in backend development on the rust side primarily, will also do project management if the need is there.
  • Will provide 40+ hours/week

Expectations, gains:

  • A proportional amount of revenue from any income generated based on value provided
  • After initial platform developed, I believe we should look for a friendly web2 platform to port over using our technology stack to generate some income and bring in users
  • 2 year target (reaching any of these will enable me to be self-sustaining, otherwise I run out of funds and have to get a job):
    • minimum $10k/month recurring income or donations, or
    • minimum $10/AUTONOMI token price, or
    • 1 income generating web2 platform conversion in progress

Vision, values:

  • Goal: create a successful suite of apps and full development stack for distributed applications
    • Highlight: distributed, not just decentralized
    • Should be no servers or specialized nodes performing work, fully P2P, anyone can participate
  • Autonomi is a piece of this puzzle, but likely not the whole solution. We need to be flexible and leverage other libraries that will get us to the end goal

Red flags:

  • Conversations must be open. All ideas are on the table. Dogma and virtue signaling are warning signs we are going down the wrong road.

What I can contribute, what can I do? Skills, areas of interest, assets (codebase, money, infrastructure). Perhaps a CV/LinkedIn?

  • Maciej Lozinski - JAMSplayer | LinkedIn
  • Rust / Web / Red / Java development
  • Project management
  • Co-op / governance ideas, research
  • Personal projects, including research, for further collective development.
  • Long-time Autonomi project involvement, knowledge of the ecosystem, OG status.

What do I expect to get? Expectations, gains.

  • Learn, gain experience
  • Motivation
  • Feeling of having purpose
  • Financial support at basic level in my country

Things important to me. Vision, values.

  • Openness, transparency
  • Free/decentralized/self-hosted software tools
  • Sharing of power, flat structure, collective decisions, include community
  • Inclusivity, make things easy for others, flat learning curve, empower disadvantaged people
  • Contribute upstream, to enabling projects, through money or time/skills
  • Education, learn from one another, eg. pair programming
  • Dogfooding, use own tools, or most aligned with our values, create tools for ourselves

Things I want to avoid. Red flags.

  • VC investors, possibility for the co-op to be sold or turned into a capitalistic entity.
  • Non-free tools

(Now, to reading others’ stuff  )

I think this project requires a small focussed team initially ,with the skills listed , to get started, so i will declare myself out for now (my enthusiasm is a bit ahead of my skill set :slightly_smiling_face:), but look forward with interest to see you get up and running. :+1:

Edit: I really hope the right mix of talent can be found in the community (Come on chaps!) so as the full development stack for distributed applications can emerge (opening up huge opportunity for a bigger co-op) , and you get the support you and @loziniak and whoever else is joining deserve, i know maidsafe had an offshore team a few years back maybe they have some advice, contacts, insights to offer if there are skills gaps that cant be filled by the community atm

Well, it’s Tuesday now. So far its just @loziniak and I. Is anyone else interested? If so, please post something by the end of the day.

I wouldn’t sell yourself short. Anyone with the ability to focus human attention on this effort is useful. I think in particular this:

This is the most important question we need to answer right now: how do we generate revenue from this platform. We need some creative solutions to make this thing self sustaining. Without this, the platform is dead, not because of technical issues, but because we won’t be able to bring in talent and we won’t have the funds to market the platform to users. If this was your sole focus for 20 hours a week, I bet you could come up with some great ideas.

What I can contribute, what can I do? Skills, areas of interest, assets (codebase, money, infrastructure). Perhaps a CV/LinkedIn?

  • I’m interested in contributing what I can towards creating Autonomi applications that add value to a specific market where traction can be gained.
  • I have some knowledge in business and economics that I hope can add some value
  • I can help with testing apps, providing feedback, UX suggestions, improving documentation, app ideas
  • I won’t have a huge amount of time, but after following this project since 2014 or so, I want to do something to help if I can

What do I expect to get? Expectations, gains.

  • To see some cool apps getting made that I’ve been able to play some small part in shaping

Things important to me. Vision, values.

  • Getting rid of ‘middlemen’ and ‘walled-gardens’ we see in so many software solutions
  • Privacy being for everyone, not just those who know how to use special tools

Things I want to avoid. Red flags.

  • Building stuff that doesn’t have a market
  • Building stuff without a sustainable revenue model… even non-profits need to pay their way somehow

Though I can’t commit loads of time or huge skills, I’d like to chip in what I can to support the co-op, so count me in… and if I turn out to be useless, just kick me out

Thanks for the encouraging words @zettawatt , hope you are feeling better (that’s a heck of a shift you’ve done the last couple of months and Colony is a tremendous outcome )

Been thinking about a relatively straight forward business model (need a couple of days to put together something) that invites conversation with sme’s instead of a sales pitch and lets business owners self-identify their biggest headaches.

Headaches might look something like this ..

Platform Dependence
Data & Privacy Risks
Cost of Cloud & IT
Local Discovery & Loyalty
Sustainability Pressure
Administrative Overload
Payments & Cash Flow
Reputation & Reviews
Community Engagement

These are general pain points we (non technical people)
could (with a simple low cost to make, but stylish system) research/validate demand (for solutions) without pitching a specific product and the data can be pushed up to the developers, preferably with concrete orders in place for the solution.

Early days Co-op … part of it might be

An distributed, autonomous network solutions provider for small to medium sized business?

  • Own your data,
(with a medium/long term goal of own your audience.)

  • Predictable costs, no hidden platform tax.

  • Resilient and greener by design

This kind of framing i think will resonate with
small business owners.

Since @DavidMc0 is in, i’m back in, on same terms, just kick me out if i’m crap haha

Alright, sounds like this is our initial crew. Welcome aboard! It sounds like we’re relatively close in alignment. I don’t see any fundamental conflicts with the statements above. Do you guys agree?

So next steps. I think we should take the next week to put together our pitches for what we want to do as a group. What do we see as the most important project(s) we should focus on to provide the most value to the network, based on our capabilities? It doesn’t necessarily need to be a software product either. It could be marketting this idea outside to bring in more members from other like minded projects or protocols. Or maybe we discuss business opportunities or architect monetization strategies. We can do anything, but we need to decide what that is  .

Let’s have something ready to discuss by next Wednesday October 1st whether that be a slide deck, video, organized forum post, etc. We can also do a live call if folks prefer. What are your thoughts on this?

Personally, i would prefer something like sharing through DM’s (even better when we have our own tech) for a week, maybe two, and then a call, … not that i don’t like throwing rough (not even half baked) ideas at a wall on the forum , i have deep respect for the vast majority here, i just think a bit of privacy might be good initially and might attract a few more members to our Co-op

Just got some data on pain points facing small business (in my home area, and wider Scotland) from a technology standpoint and they are significant and interesting.

Looking forward very much to learning about what autonomi innovation/labs has tomorrow

My 2 cents.

John

I can start a DM group on here as well while we sort it out if that is preferable. I’ll probably pitch my ideas to the wider group just to get some more visability, but that would be separate from what we discuss.

That sounds perfect and makes a lot of sense :+1:

Seems like an alignment, but maybe not down to details – I think some of us had in mind openness/transparency INSIDE the organization, and some – OUTSIDE. Personally, I’m for a mixed solution, maybe we should decide roughly what we discuss publicly on forum, and what – privately in DMs. Maybe a good first topic to think through?

I’ve heard similar opinion, but about our initial phase 0 introductions – that they may have deterred some participants. Worth considering how transparent we want to be outside.

I have something similar ready, but directed at overal internet users, not only entrepreneurs. 5 years ago I’ve made a poll among 28 people, mostly friends and family, as a part of “Social Impact Strategy: Tools for Entrepreneurs and Innovators” Coursera design thinking course. I’ve analyzed the results, and made couple interesting conclusions. Seems a good moment to make it public

just to confirm, I will join in and help.

Can help with Product Management , software architecture, creation aspects of build, Test case/plan, test automation, orchestration and provisioning automation, most devOp, NetOp stuff.

Also anything to do with containers and vms, Linux OS related, Storage I can help out.

I am currently mainly working in bash , html5 and JS land with Ansible, and python flask lately (interfacing with incus/LXD and container and VM launching via kvm), have worked in others but not current. (Vmware mainly, some Docker related stuff .)

Ancient history, I am an rdbms programmer but in LAN land (TCP/IP) , Data Admin/Architect from way back , so I ‘get’ accounting systems and CRM/ERP systems having design and coded a bunch of them. (dbase/clipper, later J2EE based stuff)

My day job is some of the above.. for cloudprox.com.
