Shifting to Linux

Why on earth would anybody want to use a Windows terminal on Linux??? Are there real advantages, or is it just a marketing trick?

I have the feeling Microsoft may secretly be planning a switch to the Linux kernel. Obviously after rebranding it, like Google did with Android.

I guess it depends on your familiarity and what you are looking to accomplish. I’d say Powershell is a better scripting mechanism than Bash/Shell but not as robust as Python or Perl with all their modularity (while being simpler than both), so it sits in a little bit of a middle space.

If you are already proficient with Bash and Python, there really isn’t much point. But, if you are coming over from being a Windows admin and want to get into Linux, I could see it being quite useful.

I’m not really proficient in anything. I just want my tools to obey me instead of trying to “help” me and then requiring I reboot five times. I remember one time I tried to do something on Windows and it wouldn’t let me create a shortcut to a .bat file, I believe it was. I mean, come on! Then there is the whole permissions mystique with NTFS.

In Windows, right-clicking is a friend.

Powershell is great on Windows and Windows itself look and works really nice most if the time. But I have developed an allergy to anything touched by Microsoft and other large corporations.
On Linux I can live mostly free of symptoms and can easily steer away from distributions that become contaminated with software that tries to lock you in into certain choices. It is a never-ending struggle.

Yes. I just wiped windows 10 in exchange for Ubuntu Budgie. And This is when my life changed forever.

My story…

I had a brand new Windows 10 factory install.

The moment I turned it on, I got 4 pop ups.

One said: your system is not protected, get this free trial; then another one said: we have scanned your system and found 136 process that are slowing down your computer. Purchase now to fix, before it is too late…

“Where did this invasive protection porn come from,” ran through my mind, as I scrambled to my feet! “Help! Please, Some one help me! Microsoft is already preying on my fears like a wild animal,” so I ran to the nearest exit to find any flavour of Linux that was willing to help me…

But there is a happy ending to this story,

You see it was love at first sight. I Love Budgie and Budgie loves me. Its so cute, and simple, well behaved, quiet, and well fed, and subservient to its master. It is truly a thing of beauty, and it takes care of me; I no longer need to fear. All it wants to do is help, and be in its OS place of Zen.

Those sales pitches are from wherever you bought your laptop from (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc), not Microsoft.

And to to think there is not a highly symbiotic relationship between the hardware suppliers and Microsoft would be extremely naive.
Thats the hardware companies trying to claw back some of the hefty chunk that Microsoft charge them for installing the crappy default OS in the first place.

Microsoft only charges manufacturers ~$30 to install Windows.

Microsoft sells laptops not filled with junk, or you can reinstall Windows before even booting up your laptop the first time. That’s what I do.

Canonical/Ubuntu has spyware, as well. If people are going to lambast Microsoft, at least don’t install a Canonical OS.

Fair points - though I would argue it is simpler (though no less annoying) to “sanitise” a Canonical OS than anything from MS.

Sure, I get it, just having a bit of fun. Windows is good for some stuff, like game dev for me. I’m just excited about the simplicity of Linux these days. Cheers

What spyware does it have, as a matter of interest?

Ubuntu Spyware: What to Do? - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation some details about some searches were being sent to canonical, then after pressure from users, they stopped, according to this article.

Not great that they were doing it in the first place, but not exactly in the same league as Windows, it has to be said.

As you say, I’m pretty sure they dropped that search thing a couple of years ago, and also the Amazon search after all the protests it generated. I wouldn’t trust Mark Shuttleworth as far as I could throw him, but at least there are people watching over his shoulder.

Totally agree. The fact the community getting so scandalised actually had any impact whatsoever is revealing in itself. Do microsoft and apple have communities? Well, actually, I say that and I am immediately reminded of one time in a cafe in Berlin counting 10+ mac using hipsters… Beards, beanies, mustaches, chai lattes and macs

Just so you know, if Chrome had bricked your system, that would have meant that your computer would have been broken beyond repair. That’s what bricked means; that the device becomes about as useful as a brick.

I believe what Mint does is mainly “sanitizing” Ubuntu. After Ubuntu makes Debian more user friendly. One of the great things about open source is that projects can build on top of each other. Sanitizing either Windows or Mac is not possible, because the code is secret. Beginners are drawn do Ubuntu because they have marketing to a greater extent than e.g. Linux Mint. But I believe following the crowd is always a mistake, albeit maybe not a very big one in the case of Ubuntu. Still, there are better and more sanitary distributions out there. This is a good site.

I know, I was so frustrated after the 5th time it happened that I was being a little dramatic.
And then last night when I forgot and opened Chrome again I nearly put a brick through the screen. That would have been wrong too.

oh that “bricking your machine”
As unofficial tech support our most reasonable response to that is a cup of chamomile tea and a wee lie down in a darkened room

I gave up on Mint again.
I removed Chrome and installed Brave… Brave froze the PC same as Chrome.
Firefox worked perfectly.
Exact same issue caused me to get rid of Mint the last time I installed it.
None of this with Kubuntu or Ubuntu which I have run for extended periods on the exact same machine.

I actually just installed Budgie which I thought I would dislike but I am very much enjoying it.
