BARD: " Can you estimate the current degree of decentralization of each of the currently functional decentralized crypto data storage platforms like and including filecoin?"

Sure, here is a breakdown of the current degree of decentralization of some of the most popular decentralized crypto data storage platforms:

  • Filecoin: Filecoin is one of the most decentralized decentralized crypto data storage platforms. As of March 2023, it has over 100,000 nodes, and the majority of these nodes are located in different countries. This makes it very difficult for any single entity to control the network.

  • Siacoin: Siacoin is another decentralized crypto data storage platform that is relatively decentralized. As of March 2023, it has over 10,000 nodes, and the majority of these nodes are also located in different countries. However, Siacoin is not as decentralized as Filecoin, and there is a higher concentration of nodes in certain countries.

  • Storj: Storj is a decentralized crypto data storage platform that is less decentralized than Filecoin and Siacoin. As of March 2023, it has over 5,000 nodes, and the majority of these nodes are located in the United States. This makes Storj more vulnerable to censorship and attack.

It is important to note that the degree of decentralization of these platforms is constantly changing. As more people start using these platforms, the networks will become more decentralized. However, it is also possible that some of these platforms could become more centralized in the future.

Here are some factors that can affect the degree of decentralization of a decentralized crypto data storage platform:

  • The number of nodes in the network.
  • The geographical distribution of the nodes.
  • The economic incentives for nodes to participate in the network.
  • The governance structure of the network.

The more nodes there are in a network, the more decentralized it is. This is because it is more difficult for any single entity to control a network with a large number of nodes.

The geographical distribution of the nodes is also important. A network with nodes located in different countries is more decentralized than a network with nodes located in a single country. This is because it is more difficult to censor or attack a network with nodes located in different countries.

The economic incentives for nodes to participate in the network also affect the degree of decentralization. If nodes are not properly incentivized, they may be less likely to participate in the network. This can make the network more centralized.

The governance structure of the network also affects the degree of decentralization. If the governance structure is too centralized, it can give too much power to a small group of people. This can make the network less decentralized.

Overall, the degree of decentralization of a decentralized crypto data storage platform is a complex issue. There are many factors that can affect the degree of decentralization, and it is important to consider all of these factors when choosing a platform.

Looks to me like SAFE is going to blow the doors off other platforms in terms of decentralization. :exploding_head:

Filecoin is not really unique since it uses 3rd party storage solution IPFS and have little control really over what really happens with the data. As far as I understand Filecoin is basically a ledger with entries that point where a file on IPFS is stored.

Safe Network with a native data layer build in and consensus algorithm is way beyond what they have done. Filecoin is NO match with what MaidSafe is building.

So being in the top 3 or even top 1 would be no supprise to me.

That is very interesting!

Sorry, this is off topic (but maybe not if we want to talk about the validity of the output from Bard and ChatGPT) but I think the statement of Storj having 5,000 nodes needs a fact check. I think there are a lot more nodes than that. Itā€™s complicated because there are multiple ā€˜Satellitesā€™ which are essentially a namespace. This Grafana page:-

https://storjstats.info/d/storj/storj-network-statistics?orgId=1&from=now-30d&to=now

of Storj stats shows there being about 23,000 nodes.

Not at all - AI is pretty crappy still - especially with numbers in my limited experience. So corrections are important. I didnā€™t fact-check it as if I did I might as well have looked it all up myself.

Good to know. I think my current guess that SAFE will have orders of magnitude more nodes still holds.

Thatā€™s how it starts

I just donā€™t think you can trust these LLMs with facts but you can rely on them for creativity or some level of guidance. They seem to throw out psychologically significant round numbers like 10,000 or 100,000 all too often, even in my own experiences asking factual information.

It says over 100,000? If it knows itā€™s over 100,000 then why not just tell me the actual number it found? And if you ask for sources, sometimes it will give you dead links or made up stuff.

Perplexity.ai is at least better for fact checking and providing sources.

lol, yes ā€¦ but only if you arenā€™t aware. Iā€™d look it up myself if it was important. That said, people trust the corporate media on the whole and itā€™s run by unthinking obedient minions akin to AI ā€¦ so really no difference.

Said it before and Iā€™ll say it again, there is no shared ā€œtruthā€ ā€¦ there is personal pragmatic truth and there is faith in anotherā€™s pragmatic truth.

Doesnā€™t make for a very informed conversation or approach then though. The number of Filecoin nodes is a measurable metric. Iā€™m all for having fun with AI but using it this way is like smashing windows with a hammer rather than driving in nails. Just my opinion. I like the question asked though.
