Routers for advanced setups

MikroTik hAP ax3 US Version

I was looking at this one is that good?

Yes, very good HW. Just be aware that RouterOS (SW on Mikrotik routers) is somehow specific, somebody likes it, somebody hates it.
If you want it lets you do much more than other home routers like ASUS or TPlink, but it can can be overwhelming sometimes.

Edit: I have hAP ax2 (same CPU I think) and currenly it runs with 200k opened connections just fine.

Ah ok so the mikrotik are better than the asus? I was just looking at the wifi6 asus router for $260 (rt x88u pro)

ASUS is focused on home users - “cool” design, simple configuration
Mikrotik is focused on profesionals - more versatility, but less user friendly

From my point of view that ASUS rt x88u pro may be good, but for $260 it is way overpriced. I wouldn’t pay more than $150 for what it is.

ah ok thanks, I did find this other mikrotik on amazon for a bit less than that asus. It’s $244 on amazon.

MikroTik RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN-US

Is this one much better than that other mikrotik?

also my router from xfinity rn is connected to the wall via a coaxil cable, I don’t see any port for that on any of these routers. Do I have to get a converter or something?

Mikrotik has some good routers (ex RB5009) but note that you will have to learn routerOS and manually configure the router. Can be done but it is not a simple setup.

ah ok yea I just skimmed through some youtube videos, doesnt seem too complicated would prolly take a day of me tinkering around. I’ve setup masternodes before and built my own pc so I could figure it out.

Its hard to say what is good or better without knowing your goals.

I currently have the CCR2004 which is great but I have pushed it to its limits and have decided to upgrade as I only have 1 day left to return it and get something better.

That said it will more than satisfy most users needs.

yea Im trying to run as much nodes as possible without breaking the bank.

I just purchased the rb5009 gonna get here tmrw. But not sure what to do about the coaxial cable I see converters online but they’re like 130$ I scheduled an appt with my isp for them to add an ethernet cable outlet but idk if they will do it for free has anyone else had this issue?

Switch your old router from ISP to bridge mode and use it as a convertor to ethernet. Even the shitty ones work fine in this role.

ah ok IDK if I can even do that with this one its all managed through an app I couldn’t even login to it using my ip address. Do you know if its possible with these locked down routers?

It should be, but you have to ask your ISP on that.

You mean you have already 100+ nodes ?

I had 230 yesterday (4 machines), but there were some configuration mistakes in my setup so I am rebuilding it today.

So you guess it is enough for 300/300 Mbps and about 300-500 nodes?

I’am coming onboard the MikroTik train with you guys. My internet barely works with the TP-Link ax20 router running 85 nodes, despite CPU and RAM have low utility.

Going for MikroTik hAP axÂł

They call it a access point because it is wireless? Wish they called it a wireless router, gets me a little nervous if I order a router or a access point, too me that is two different things. Hope there is some youtube guide or something, that Router OS is not a nightmare to setup.

Yes, it is what you call wireless router. Or better to say with deafult config acts like it, but you can configure it as router, AP, client, repeater… RouterOS allows you wide range of use.

They call is home access point because they sell primary to ISPs and they want to differentiate between devices intended for use in customer homes, devices for last mile and devices for backbone parts of the ISP/company network.

Mikrotik users, have you had any issues with FastTrack?

I have been having a bit of a nightmare where everything would slow down and speed up in cycles.

After days of pulling my hair out I turned FastTrack off and bam :crossed_fingers: it sems to have solved the issue.

but now you’re back at overloading that cpu ?
