Very powerful indeed. Straightforward, simple. Works.

From the first time that I got the basic idea of XOR space, the word that comes up is “geodesic.” I hope the image isn’t too much of a stretch.

From Wikipedia:

A geodesic is a locally length-minimizing curve. Equivalently, it is a path that a particle which is not accelerating would follow. In the plane, the geodesics are straight lines. On the sphere, the geodesics are great circles (like the equator).

It’s geodesic in human space, or at least it aims to be, without spelling it out.

It’s one of those things that is a metaphor of a metaphor, not easy to nail down.

The idea is that you can reach other people in a self-made community without anyone else getting in the way, that it is impossible for anyone else to get in the way.

If you want a concrete use case that illustrates what has been rattling around in my imagination like a fly just out of reach: Think of displaced people forced to live in some marginal situation, maybe on a literal roadside, maybe on a metaphorical roadside because their philosophy marginalizes them in liberal society and reduces them to humble or no employment, because the national government and the media have been captured by their enemies. Now at last they can build community and an independent economy without the thugs and parasites getting in their way.

The image that comes to mind (I’m no visual artist) well there is more than one. An obvious one (and not very good) is a global mesh, like a geodesic dome. Another (again not so good, actually rather terrible but hinting I’m on the right path) is the scene in the John Carpenter movie, Prince of Darkness, where one of the characters reaches through a membrane into another space; the portal in the tv series, Stargate, might be a little better, along with the Star Trek explanation of warp drive as being like two points on a plane that are brought together when the plane is folded onto itself.

Some great ideas presented here but slogans and branding are best left to professionals. Spending (many, many) thousands of dollars to yield millions is a no brainer. The tagline a company chooses can make or break them and the mitigation costs are insignificant. Because the concept of MS is not easily explained to the masses (non technicals) some very unique and efficient words need to be chosen by qualified individuals who have access to historical data on “why things work, and why they dont”. Most certainly the ideas of the community are necessary to arrive at the destination. Im a fan of K.I.S.S. and I think a single word that can sum up SN is the best, although that may be tough to find. Anything technical is not going to do well IMO. Technical people have the skills and options available to them to make their stuff “secure” , so appealing to that crowd is costly. SAFE is great but what is “safe” ? is it a condom? Does it protect my kids from porn? Does it protect my money? Does it protect me from A**holes? NO is the answer. The SafeNet does not do any of those. So why is it called safe? some may ask. What safe means to everyone here is not what it means to the masses. And its the masses that is the target.

I agree, taglines are best when they are discussed by people who are not totally into something. I have been part of two corporate branding processes, both imho quiet successful, but the staff hated it at first. Later on, people got used to it and it just worked fine.

I´d think of “SAFEnet” as a working title with the prospect to be called entirely different in the future. “Secure access for every one” to me is a claim, not a name. I´d prefer something that works like “internet” - that is: just describing the character of the network. Since it is not a firm, it doesn´t need a slogan. Maidsafe should have one, and “Secure access for every one” is a good one. Btw. I had this in my mind alternatively:

That’s a very cool slogan, but on its own, what does it mean? That could be a super tagline for a marketing campaign, bringing meaning ro it it many ways. MS could have a a dozen marketing campaigns a month, social media, print, hackthons…etc all need some kind of tagline like yours…

“Encrypt Your Database? it’s really up to you…” - “Censorship Resistant? it’s really up to you…” - “Want To Keep Your Sh*t Secure? it’s really up to you…” …its growing on me…nice one @Artiscience

I am also a fan of K.I.S.S. To me “it’s really up to you” has two references: one to personal freedom and autonomy (it’s for you and how you want to have it) one to full personal responsibility (you matter). I believe that the philosophy behind not only Maidsafe but also many other projects in the cryptospace are about this: increasing privacy and control but also being increasingly responsible for how you handle data.

I find explaining SAFE much easier than explaining similar projects.

…:
Not everyone might care about a new and better Internet, since the following could run across their mind: “What’s wrong with the Internet we already have?” In other words, it’s a loaded topic.

Instead, ask, “You’ve heard about those huge security breaches in the news, where people’s credit card and personal information has been stolen, right?” (Yeah!)

Say, “There’s a new technology after 10 years of hard work that will make all of that theft entirely impossible.” (Seriously?)

“And it works at maximum efficiency if everyone in the world uses it!” (Wow!)

“Would you like to try it?” (Yes.)
“Go to their website at [MaidSafe’s website].” (OK.)
“You’ll be able to learn as much as you’d like about it, and have access to the download.” (Cool, thanks.)

Regardless of their answer being Yes or No:
“I should have told you before. It also has countless other features, which are for home and personal use.” (Oh really?)

“You can store your pictures, movies, music, documents, important files—forever, indestructibly, with perfect security, for a small one-time fee. Yes, it’s that revolutionary.” (That’s crazy!)

“It’s not subject to control by third parties, not even Google.” (Holy shit!)
“You are in sole control. The contract is between you and the system, the network.” (Amazing.)

(You could have started the conversation off here, if that topic suits them more preferably. But even then, that’s more like me trying to sell some cloud service—instead of instilling in them from the first paragraphs the very pressing global-but-local fact of data theft.)

“You can even earn back that fee, by lending your local disk space out to everyone online!” (What!?)
“Like I said, it’s revolutionary, so the technology running in the background is very complicated.” (I see.)
“However, in the 10 years of its complex development, they engineered it side-by-side to be easy to use.”
(Phew, that is relieving.)

“Earning back your fee is only the start of it. This is a resource-backed method of making legitimate cash.” (Hold on, stop talking, let me go download it right now!!)

“They invented and called it Safecoin, the world’s first digital monetary system that can be instantly transferable across the globe, with no fees, and no trace of it ever being spent.” (Just like real cash!)

[joke](Wouldn’t this disrupt the world and especially PayPal? What gives?) “Whoa! Slow down there!”[/joke]

“It even has the potential to be a brand new Internet!” (…?)

“Like the Internet invented in the 90’s, but with far more advanced technology—without spyware, adware, viruses, malware.” (OMG.) “All of this with the same indestructible code-base that keep all those major companies’ data from being subjected to fraud and theft.” (…speechless)

“With something so good to be true, you can see why I’ve not initiated you on its perplexing technological inter-workings. It’s all there, though, completely.” (…)

“Tell everyone you can about it.”

It’s like a sales pitch, or even a multi-level marketing explication, except it’s unquestionably for a good cause. Every section separated by ellipses in this post should be an indicator for a new aspect of the SAFE Net, while explaining it to a person.

Actually, it is still no easy feat, considering the memorization involved, generally saying. But hopefully this idea shows the structure that could potentially be the way to go for publicizing it to a complete stranger, ad lib.

You could also make your own version of this post without the interpersonal interactions, and hand it out as an informational flier—hopefully adhering to the very simplified/understandable language—not jumping into too many subjects at once!

Let their own time be used for reading the website and researching about it, rather than talking about every single complicated/convoluted aspect, by yourself.

Hopefully it wasn’t too cheesy or incomplete.

EDIT: to anyone scoffing at this, thinking that the features will sell themselves 100% of the way, stop living in fantasy. Market this! It can be done, and will enable adoption way way way way way more quickly (speed is of the essence; without campaigning, global problems won’t stop themselves any more quickly). I hope people reading a thread with a title like this wouldn’t think twice, of course. Not to say tone of voice has to sound like a salesman; be yourself, and such. It’s just to pick up the pace a little, anything to pick up the pace. There are no catches even to speak of if everything runs perfectly as advertised.

It’s better to be on the safe (network) rather than sorry.

Or some variation like:

Its better to be SAFEnet than sorry.

OR

Its better to be .SAFE than sorry. (This one also introduces the concept of the .safe domain)

It’s better to be .SAFE than .CONNED.

Here’s another one: “don’t worry you’re .SAFE now”

There’s .SAFETY in numbers (then ants inside a geodesic structure)

Kudos for promoting SAFENET and that is what is necessary to move this new concept forward

Can you explain what they are “trying”?

I can see what you’re getting at, though I can’t think of anything that would make “it” less vague (but maybe my brain has given up after typing comprehensively all that). My claim was (in the hypothetical scenario) that whatever “it” is, it’s now available to the world, and it prevents said catastrophes.

I just thought of something now, though:
“There’s a new technology after 10 years of hard work—called The SAFE Network—that will make all of that theft entirely impossible.”

And maybe, “Would you like to try it out?” adding “out” to the end.

I think it’s important to focus on calling it The SAFE Network rather than immediately saying Maidsafe or mentioning Maidsafe at all. They’ll see the Maidsafe website and think it’s a cool name, not knowing that it’s the company at first, but will find out eventually in the days ahead. Gotta remember that most people have 0 clue what any of this is, ever, until they do. Definitely don’t bother with any of the debates surrounding it that the media will focus the heck on. Granted, the contrived media talking points backlash will probably have certain people freak out and stop using it, even if you’ve already sold them on it. (“I’m supporting criminals, what the? But I was told it helps the world’s security systems…?”)

Or simply

“The internet made better”

Creates interest. That is a key point.

But remember that the first a lot of people will know of SAFE is the link in clear web to content on the SAFE network. So to view it they have to click one link to install the launcher (like clicking on any other installable addon) to view the content. Some will some won’t but as SAFE adoption increases so will the need for people to install the launcher to see their favourite cat video.

Why will a cat video be on SAFE?

Shouldn’t cats also be included in the “Everyone” :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Joking aside, cat videos is a running joke for some people, and for others it makes their life worthwhile.:heart_eyes_cat:

Allow me to clarify my question: Why will a cat video be on SAFE in preference to the clearnet, given the extra friction that will be involved in using SAFE as compared to using clearnet?

“Contraband” - yes.

Politically dangerous views - yes.

“Criminal conspiracies.” - yes.

Cat videos - not so much.
