Ports to different languages

As I understand Maidsafe network codes are written in C ++ but I remember that there are some talks about porting of the core modules (?) to other languages such as Node.js. How is the progress of the porting ? and does the builder need to know C++ to work on an app.

First time here but I have been following Maidsafe and the forum for a long time.

I recall that c#, python, and java will be available initially;
