None of these are bad ideas, they are all about decentralizing MaidSafe development, which is good for everybody.
If anything it would only help the team, correct?
And wasn’t a developer forum discussed a while back? It would be a very powerful idea to Help development
Daniel @dallyshalla why not have us create it? Could be a community-run forum for community development. We could be mods, along with @bluebird perhaps and Ben and @lightyear And @Seneca If he has time and anyone else who has shown proficiency in development. We could assist MaidSafe by discussing tasks with them and relaying it to the forum. There could also be a Category for sharing potential new rust devs from UPwork / freelance.com etc
There was a thread about DNS being a revenue stream a few months back, but I can’t remember Maidsafe commenting on it.
As @Seneca said, someone will register/squat on them, so it may as well be Maidsafe. Regular income from core domains would be a steady/big earner, IMO. I would rather this went to the creators of the network instead of random, freeloading, individuals.
Maybe it is because those who don’t like the state of affairs just act like grown ups and divest/leave. There is no need to try to poison the well on your way out.
With the current model, someone will create a market for DNS names though. It is inevitable and is a business opportunity open to anyone who is willing to try.
It will be like a gold rush when the final network goes live. People will grab stuff like search, find, porn, TV, music, football, golf, etc, etc. They will then squat until they get the right price and/or they will rent the names out (as redirects, shadow sites, etc).
While there are other DNS solutions which can overlay the core one, the core DNS is likely to remain relevant. It will be much better than IP addresses which form the core clear net IP addresses too.
People spend millions on concise domains on the clear net. Be under no illusion, DNS names are big business.
Auctioning off purchase or rental of popular names will certainly raise a decent amount of money and the auctions could/should remain live until launch. It wouldn’t interfere with maidsafecoin and would simply be an avenue capitalised on which another party will do in their absence post-launch.
David did speak of a mechanism to prevent name transfers…I have no idea how that could be achieved, maybe that would only be possible in conjunction with a ‘proof of unique human’ or equivalent.
Has the roadmap page been updated, I dont remember seeing ‘Trading’ on the Safecoin branch.
hmmm - sorry i have to admit don’t remember exactly … but i personally think you shouldn’t try to implement this unique human thing … it might just cause huge problems …either with people not being able to do something or with the possibility of people being identified and corrupting anonymity …
…and i don’t think you can effective stop the creation of multiple accounts in those cases you want to …
I been out of loop lately. I made good coffee, and went through 545 comments.
Selling publicID decentralized DNS system is a fantastic idea. However, I am against hoarding artificial naming system. But this could be a good temporarily solution until pet naming system (micro dns) is build. However, the problem is that dns is hard to change once it catches on. It’s exactly like the problem we have today with ICANN. We have several solutions but nobody is switching because we’re lazy creatures. Getting the pet naming system out of the door as soon safenet beta launches is the best solution from my perspective.
I propose another solution. Start a decentralized ISP company (maidISP) that build a meshnet boxes. Dirvine did say that he is working the meshbox, if I recall correctly. You guys can make serious money from this. All profits goes straight to safenet devs. This may not be feasible since safenet isn’t ready but one could make meshbox that is safenet future proof. Just implement CJDNS and we’re golden. Once safenet goes live, do a firmware update. Poof, it’s a bomb proof system right out of the door.
Why wouldn’t your first instinct be, “from the safecoin process”
That all this time you have your intent just only on safecoin, the safe network, that’s where this cash would be coming from.
When people inquired “does maidsafe have money problems” over the months it’s always the same answer, “no no no” until the perhaps last minute?
I shared my alternative approach: In this case the developers know up front what kind of funds are available, there could be a clear indication that after this there is nothing coming their way without a finished safe network implementation that is correct in what it does.
You’re obviously free to do whatever you like and don’t need my permission; I’m glad I gave my criticism that I personally feel leads to a successful network with clearly defined budget that is known to the developers in advance.
I also understand and acknowledge you get hosed in the early day, but also you had every right to reclaim your loss from day 1.
No not money problems, simple cash flow, it’s a business process any business has to deal with. We have been very clear about runway and posted so several times. In this very thread we have again laid out burn rate etc, It should be very clear.
In terms of dev rewards etc. we have several options and you may see some next week or the week after. Options are always good and a good business should always have many options. We do already pay bounties for pull requests, but tailed off a bit recently with the flurry of very fast changes to code. Several options like gitpay etc. though will help this.
We are lucky we also have a strong community, just look at all the ideas, we won’t do them all but take them all seriously. I think that works in everyone’s interests.
If we can see SafeX project working in the way you mention it will help us understand what you are meaning and have a nice decent route to follow. I hope you are doing this with your project to showcase the features and benefits. That will help us as well.
You need to manufacture such a thing in large numbers to make it economic, which means payment up front.
Both of those obstacles are overcome if you take something like the (Linux-firmwared) Linksys WRT54G series router, or similar, and reflash it with your own custom firmware.
They are based on an ARM processor, so it leverages development work that has to be done anyway for the farmer community.
Getting Linksys’s permission to slap a “Maidbox” sticker on it might be tricky, but if you promise to order a container load they might be amenable.
Custom Pi 3 though is an option. Element 14 can do a lot there with the right idea. They have set up a supply chain process I spent some time there a few months back, but other events pulled me back. It is seemingly though do-able. Need t confirm costs but it looks reasonable.
