looks like this behaviour has been fixed with most of the nodes, but not all. I assume a node will suffer this if it happens to have some misbehaving neighbours.. and the misbehaving neighbours tend to disappear in the long run.
Nevertheless, my opinion is that nodes should not be prone to suffer because of any misbehaving incoming data… that means there is some attack surface open.

Seems to be fixed now?
One sympton for a suffering node was that also number of connected peers was quite low, usually under 10. Now all nodes have more than 50 peers. 
Do not know what happened, but everything is ok now.
