News happens whether it is reported or not, propagandised or not…events happen. If you have no interest in News, you have no interest in events going on in the world around you. You seem to be paying a hefty price in ignorance in your extreme avoidance of being propagandised. Can you not discern propaganda from proper journalism for yourself? How can you even be informed enough to form opinions about the world around you, nevermind express them?
You avoided answering my questions…
Typical of my point. Lots of typing, and very little interacting or dialog.
I hear enough news to know what is going on- I know my world history and the history of politics and political theory. Just because I don’t plant myself in front of the 24 hour propaganda machines does not make me uninformed.
Most of it is like crack. Gets you high, but doesn’t accomplish much. Knowledge is cheap, action is what matters…
Ok you asked 1 question addressed to “anyone” - in answer -“yes, me”.
You’ve told me what you’re not informed by and that you don’t like TV and that you don’t invest much energy in obtaining News.
Can you tell me specifically what you are informed by in regard to current affairs or are you really saying you are not interested if it doesn’t directly impact you and yours?
I’m interacting btw
You are twisting my words and wasting my time. The news is everywhere You cannot miss it. Most if it is total propaganda.
It is biased by the very nature that no news organization can come on and say “nothing important happened today” They must find a story, and they must make it as sensationally interesting as possible. They must make you care. Even if it is “shit happens”. When we protest every emergence of brown matter we protest the very nature of life – Because the brown stuff is a daily routine.
I have zero need to justify myself to you. If I am wrong about something, feel free to correct me. But don’t twist my words to the extreme then criticize the straw man.
My question stands: Can anyone deny that the media and the politicians are in the business of keeping you pissed off? Are you better off because everyone is pissed off?
What does any of this have to do with the MaidSAFE technology? I am still stumped on that one.
@jreighley
Knowledge is valuable. It is what sets humans apart from animals. Our cultural evolution is entirely based on the creation and accumulation of knowledge.
Action without knowledge is limited to idiocy and instinct.
I think you are opinionated rather than informed, not as wise as you think you are. The folk here are not as stupid as you think we are. Your arguments are either poorly constructed (weak) or you are not explaining them well enough for them to be convincing. Like your criticism of twitter, your comments about facebook comments are poorly reasoned beyond the obvious statements about what people read when commenting.
You make some valid points, which I agree with, but you then make the mistake of applying them to me, my use of twitter, all uses of twitter / facebook / mainstream media etc. This is poor thinking and or arrogance.
You both dismiss the value of news sources and claim to be adequately informed. You claim to consume enough, from who knows where. You don’t bother to explain what this actually means, or try to demonstrate why your claims are valid. You then go on to dismiss SAFE Network as just another social media platform. All this shows ignorance, not the knowledge you say is cheap. Knowledge is valuable, but one has to work at understanding, manipulating and applying it. Even more, at communicating it.
I’m sure there is a very small percentage like jreighley who choose to take knowledge/personality/action in a very different light. And that’s fine. But everyone else on the planet still exists, and they intake it much differently. They are propagandized to their current belief/etc. The thing is, not all propaganda is bad, only black propaganda is. And it’s a learning process for every individual to not be harmed by the latter, and choose even the former sparingly. If there is an excess amount of comments somewhere that no one will read all the way through, maybe there needs to be additional outlets to ease that up and distribute the excess; but the excess itself isn’t the problem, since that’s just how many people there are. Well, thanks for reading.
I didn’t accuse any of you of that. You accuse me, without grounds or knowledge. You do not know what I know or don’t know, and I really feel no obligation to prove myself to you because you assume the worst, and ignore most of what I write.
By and large, more means of communication means more opinionated people self-importantly blasting their ideas into the ether, as I spoke of in my “poorly formed argument” about Facebook which you dismiss without addressing with an ounce of substance.
There is no shortage of information out there if you seek it. But platforms to spread it are always corrupted by the bias of their mission. Knowledge is only helpful in forming an opinion if it is relevant, balanced and kept within perspective. If you have a sensationalist hyped up opinion of something’s importance then you will overvalue certain knowledge that the expense of other knowledge. Being pissed off by muckraking politicians and their cronies in the media is exactly that – They go out of their way to make you care about something that may or may not be important.
Sometimes the news is important. Sometimes it is not. The fact that you guys insist it is always critically important demonstrates the bias I am talking about.
Still nobody cares to discuss the questions I bring up…
Not twisting your words mate, quoting them…and wasting your time how? I also answered your question, yet you ask it again. Happybeing was spot on above.
Says it all really…
You talk about not answering your questions when throughout this thread you have been asked repeatedly where it is that you find your information that allows you to so confidently declare yourself “informed”. However, you just keep repeating your mantra and same (answered) question. You also appear to be doing a hell of a lot of projecting concerning uninformed yet highly opinionated “blow-hards”
And….while I’m ranting on, there is absolutely nothing wrong with people having “agendas” anymore than having “ideas” or “thoughts” . I have an agenda, it has been repeatedly stated though and I am very transparent about it. I believe I am consistent in my views/arguments and that I will definitely be informed about a topic before expressing any opinions. By informed, I mean (if current affairs) I would have gathered information from various sources (inc TV) and thought about what facts can be gleaned or inferences made, likely scenarios playing out etc. I would then maybe come on a forum like this and discuss to get other people’s take on things to aid forming an opinion. Most things (that I talk about) other than current affairs, I have already done masses of research/thinking about over many years so I feel I can express my opinions quite legitimately on these matters – I’ve done the spadework, so to speak and feel I can argue my case – at least coherently I think.
Whether people agree or disagree with the conclusions I draw, I think most on here recognise I at least have……well…thought about things first.
The first step in any of this is actually being interested in what’s going on in the world, basic inquisitiveness about “News” which could include scientific breakthroughs, new discoveries etc. To not have this basic inquisitiveness, I find quite sad……
Even with its limitations, getting people to converse who otherwise wouldn’t or would have no reason to would seem to have some value. It may not be so much info that is communicated but it could be a process that might help walk us up the Kohlberg scale. And if there is info that is communicated, just like with Slur, its likely to be outside current hierarchical channels. The possibility for serendipity might appeal to some.
As Weber and other’s show hierarchy has its uses and kinds but if historians are seeing it as the problem that seems apt to me. The heart of hierarchy is sadism, its culls for psychopathy and acts as a support system for it. What it promotes is sadism. Within reason, we apparently did better when we weren’t even trying. Its crowd control, always trying to force levels and channels and gateways. Its spends societies energy trying to justify something harmful and unnecessary. In insisting some are better than others it victimizes. Getting people to converse more and with diversity can help undo the illusion it creates. They start talking and next they’re eating together and having kids and the fear is reduced.
The same place everyone else does. Newspaper, television, radio. What did you think?
Yep. I am playing your game. You guys get under my skin. Everyone thinks their opinions are so important… This is supposed to be a forum about emerging technologies, not a philosophical rants.
In the whole scheme of things. Internet banter is a massive waste of energy. See my unaddressed facebook example…
In the mean time I would really like to learn about maidSAFE…
This is why we’re having this conversation…you apparently started it…lol
The whole point of a forum is to discuss each other’s informed opinions isn’t it?
The problem is uninformed opinion…
Lol…yeah… full of people just talking to each other and expressing opinions this forum…crap innit…lol
And stop posting then, you clearly have an agenda and should not be trusted.
It totally depends on what the banter is. This forum is not Facebook, nor anything like it…banter-wise. Your criticism is of Facebook, not banter.
And stop wasting your energy then…lol
Ah…you’re on the wrong thread mate…maybe someone can direct you
This discussion is a prefect example of the futility of it all.
It really is a waste of time.
Anyone participating is doing so out of ego, not out of being full of worldview changing knowledge.
And that was my point in the first place.
You on the other hand do not participate out of ego and are full of world changing knowledge…is that it?
I obviously disagree anyway and it seems a bit ridiculous to state anyone participating in forums etc is an ego-maniac and that nobody can possibly change another’s worldview by discourse - how on Earth do worldviews get changed then?
Surely someone somewhere, must persuade another by power of argument, how the hell do you think we progress? Massive broad sweeping statements you keep making.
Incorrect. I am just an arrogant blow hard like the rest of you.
Most leaders earn their authority, then use it as a platform to gain power and respect. The blogger in his pajamas Usually isn’t that guy. The guy actually serving and ministering to his community and it’s needs is going to have a way more significant effect than some pundit providing the 54th post on some irrelevant forum post on some obscure website read primarily by self important neck-beards…
It may be the Ambien, but I see this app in simple terms. There is a synergistic collective benefit when humans randomly connect. I always try to keep a look out for a person to share that rare connection. I have very found memories of my first icq messenger program in the 90’s on a 25k dialup modem, I met a very special Aussey who was a horticulturist. I even was able to hear her voice a few times with alpha VOIP. It was so innocent back then and it didn’t take long to see the value in connecting with people privately when you statistically should have never connected with each other.
Hell I know how horribly messed up my perfect little would is now and that is one of many reasons why I am here. I do have fleeting moments of freedom while reading this forum site; it isn’t all lost yet. I would totally support whatever the world has to show me and I would give them the common curtsy of puking off camera for them, if it ever came to that.
That’s fine if that other person doesn’t want to be “honest” about their agenda, its all about the journey for each of us. At least it would be more difficult identifying me and stealing my identity or something. ‘Project SAFE teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what can not be cured.’
“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.” BKS Iyengar
Lol…Ok, let me just summarize…posters on this forum are ego-maniacal “blow-hards” with agendas and not to be trusted - Whereas, readers of the forum are primarily self-important “neck-beards”?..lol
My next question would be why talk to neck-beards and untrustworthy ego-maniacs then…what’s the point?
Ah I see, that was your point, that it is pointless - you are saying you came here to post pointlessly…
Hmmmm………(Scratches neck beard…) I reckon that means I win the pissing contest then….yeeeaaaaay……1-0….in your face!..……(does little neck-beard jig).
Lol……
I’m thinking that maybe we could increase the collaborative and granular nature of this idea. What if instead of a phone call with a random person, people can record say, 30-60 second snippets. People can rate the snippets for professionalism, authenticity, closeness-to-source, & relevance etc. (maybe have some kind of cool looking interactive diagram so that people could rate the snippet as it plays).
Then you have an ANT-style Algorithm that takes not what YOU consider relevant, but what the users who you consider most important (your “close” nodes however that should be determined) consider relevant, and puts together a 5-10 minutes clip composed of snippets, which then is the news to you. This would ideally include a few snippets on world news, national, state, local, traffic and weather and then even hyper-local, like a daily announcement from your specific work or school (at least initially these might be a fellow employee/student reading the daily agenda).
My thought is that rather than hear from an anchorman that a bombing happened in Africa, let me see the “best” (highest ranked according to the preferences of my close group), of the bazillion cell phone videos taken by the locals, with collaboratively made and vetted subtitles or voice-over dubs, if the person doesn’t speak my language.
If its important to me to know what happened, let me see and hear it from the perspective of the locals.
If there is a conflicting version of events, which there often is in things such as bombings in Africa, then let me hear one snippet from a Christian and one snippet from a Muslim. (or whoever the opposing sides may be).
This would be in my opinion far better than the curated news. Again in the bombing from Africa example, almost all the news that we get in the U.S. is collected by local stringers (most of whom derive their primary revenue from (read: are controlled by) either local governments or ethnic/tribal associations), and then sold to Al Jazeera, who curates it, then the BBC picks it up and curates it again, and then it is picked up by the US station of your choice who curates it a third time.
At that point pretty much the only factual stuff I get is, “A Bombing happened in Africa” and the rest is an opinion piece assigning blame.
Seems like both approaches could fit together… Kind of like how Slur wont just be used by psychopaths for money. There will be some who with hindsight feel regret and want to help people avoid mistakes in the future and realize that no theory or hypothetcal will suffice and opt to provide evidence for others to consider.
@jreighley This forum and every good suggestion is absolutely strategic and tactical. This SAFE effort is poised to change everything. The first Internet was a long term prototype. This is what comes next. Its the right place and the right time.
As for the marketing of a horizontal speech app… “Ramdomizer,” “are you random?” and an opt in “randominity index” Interesting to know what the life of someone who created a hundred durable contacts through such a process would look like. If the spent more time conversing with these contacts than the average American spends watching TV then that might merit a distinction like “randomized.”
