This was discussed on an earlier thread @betterthantrav. It looks like it will be possible to estimate the number of nodes at a given point in time, but not the number of users.
Thank you for the link, my search skills are not what they used to be The number of nodes should give us a reasonable idea of the number of active users on the network. This number will at least be better than the guesstimate of active Bitcoin users based off of wallets.
