What’s up today? (Part 2)

For small business it is though. If they have to defend against a case that continues for a long time. They lose everything because the court continues. Without limited liability, then the owner has to put his personal assets up for sale. If they don’t they lose it all anyhow because they have to stop the court case and pay damages designed to take it all.

Without limited liability then “holding” companies will be brought into the court actions as well as they are the owners. I really don’t think you understand the massive protections limited liability bring to small business owners and how far reaching legal action can be without it.

Anyhow you have your views that all legislation is to protect the big companies and the rich. You view all legislation through that lens and so its hard to discuss with you.

I’ll leave it here since this is the “What’s up today” topic and I’d have to move these posts if we keep going.

This is prejudice on your part. I’ve had several companies in my lifetime, so I know a thing or three. I’ve also been a long term trader and have worked at a company that did an IPO and I saw how the meat was made.

I’m not jumping to conclusions about your experiences here, I’d hope you wouldn’t do the same with me.

Holding companies are separate entities and one of the best vehicles for protection … the best in the world would probably be the Private Interest Foundation model offered by Panama. Like a holding company but owners are anonymous - even to the Panamanian government. Many oligarchs probably use these to hide their assets.

As long as the shares aren’t owned by you the manager of the operating company (e.g. let a trusted family member own them), then you are in a golden position and no limited liability needed.

Wow the things you have to do even with limited liability to be “really” protected. Just imagine how it’d be without.

Anyhow I’ve said what I said and still am of the firm opinion that a form of limited liability is essential for small businesses and said above it needs modification to reduce the over extending that big business does.

and yet many if not most small businesses are sole proprietorships or partnerships without limited liability protections, so there’s that.

Honestly I think many small businesses just do their best and pray that they will never get sued by someone with deep pockets, because yeah, that can easily ruin a business — in today’s “justice” system.

Whatever is going to happen in this space, it seems it’s going to happen fast.

next-generation AI that possesses human-like intelligence

FFS nobody tell the Anthropomorphism-Hunter-in-Chief aka @happybeing

No the post above is relevant - I discovered yesterday that Google Bard is blocking questions about Gaza --even questions about Gaza before the Oct. 7th attack (i.e. not current events). This is AI being used as a tool of censorship and given that AI is likely the future of information discovery, this is relevant news for people to become aware of.

It was wrong for my post to be blocked and I protest most strongly.

Edit: just wanted to add this link to the video about the Rabbit AI device – this sort of device is possibly what’s going to replace phones and with it the oligarchy will have the perfect tool to control information.

This is oppression.

Why did you block my second post @frabrunelle. Give any reasonable explanation. There was nothing violating the terms in it.

And this post is topical -it’s what’s up today on this forum - you are being oppressive.

I’ve no idea what @TylerAbeoJordan posted, but I do oppose censorship, especially if no rules have been violated. If off-topic, I suggest moving it to another thread.

Else, i second the call for an explanation. Otherwise, it feels like moderator power may have been used simply out of disagreement with expressed opinion. Which of course makes me more curious to hear the expressed opinion.

I hope “perpetual web” arrives soon!

OK the post is hidden by a poster with trust level 3 status, then moderators are alerted and a auto generated message is sent to the post author. The system uses the chief admin’s “hook” to inform the author.

There is a guideline about cross posting and also its good form that if a post is in offtopic then posting it or a link in the more public area is frowned upon for obvious reasons.

Then there is a guideline that moderation is to be left to moderators. Suggestions and/or complaints about moderation are to be posted in a topic in Meta [EDIT:] to all reading this, I only now caught up with the Meta topic that was already posted and I thank @TylerAbeoJordan for already doing it

The original post was moderated based on offtopic matter (in form of a link) being posted in wrong area and ended up being moderated.

I will flag my own post here so that all the moderators/admins will be alerted and they can discuss (if needed) and moderate those posts.

The posts are only hidden, you should be able to click the “post hidden” message to see it. If you cannot then the feature must have been removed.

hmm, I still can’t see it. All I see is the text “This post was flagged by the community and is temporarily hidden.”. If I could have clicked to actually see what was posted, I probably would not have said anything.

anyway, this is all off-topic, so I will shut-up and feel free to move my posts elsewhere.

Thermohaline convection is initiated in confined-saline-layer evaporation

Record-high efficiencies are achieved in the salinity range of 0–20 wt %

180-h continuous distillation of 20 wt % concentrated seawater is realized

Context & scale

Utilizing sunlight to drive freshwater production is a promising way to realize sustainable water supply. Recent advances in multistage solar distillation attract particular interest because it enables a multifold enhancement in water production rate. However, existing solar-powered multistage distillers suffer from reliability and limited lifetime. The undesirable reliability makes the distilled water cost much higher than the tap water price, which significantly impedes the practical adoption. A key underlying limiting factor of device reliability is the evaporator fouling induced by salt accumulation. Inspired by a natural phenomenon, thermohaline convection in the deep ocean, we demonstrate multistage solar distillation with both record-high water production efficiency and extreme resistance to salt accumulation via temperature and salinity gradient manipulation across a novel confined-saline-layer evaporator. This promises a real-world impact of solar distillation technologies.

Summary

Recent advances in multistage solar distillation are promising for the sustainable supply of freshwater. However, significant performance degradation due to salt accumulation has posed a challenge for both long-term reliability of solar desalination and efficient treatment of hypersaline discharge. Here, inspired by a natural phenomenon, thermohaline convection, we demonstrate a solar-powered multistage membrane distillation with extreme salt-resisting performance. Using a confined saline layer as an evaporator, we initiate strong thermohaline convection to mitigate salt accumulation and enhance heat transfer. With a ten-stage device, we achieve record-high solar-to-water efficiencies of 322%–121% in the salinity range of 0–20 wt % under one-sun illumination. More importantly, we demonstrate an extreme resistance to salt accumulation with 180-h continuous desalination of 20 wt % concentrated seawater. With high freshwater production and extreme salt endurance, our device significantly reduces the water production cost, paving a pathway toward the practical adoption of passive solar desalination for sustainable water economy.

I feel for anyone who had their deets lost to Trezor support.

I recently changed my phone number because after years passed from the Ledger hack I realized the scammers were never going to give up and leave me in peace.

I’ve been telling anyone who will listen for years that its crazy to use any hardware wallet that asks for personal details, even for shipping. All that does is get your name and home-address into a giant honeypot of known bitcoin/crypto holders. A target for criminals and governments alike.

Hint for vdash fans: you might want to get yourself a free API key from either Coingecko.com or Coinmarketcap.com in time for the next testnet.

Great work, did you find it easy to implement in Rust or did you make it look easy?

The tricky part was integrating with futures. Creating a third future for the web requests handler was causing strange behaviour which looked like a problem talking to the APIs, but wasn’t so I wasted time scratching my head a bit :man_facepalming:

In fact it looks like a problem with the Rust select! macro, but I worked around it by switching to a simple await and left the existing futures in place (for reading logfile lines and handling timer and keyboard events).

It was fun solving that and getting it to work.
