I think I’ve gotten my head around this WASM concept …
So anyone could write a Javascript web-browser GUI that itself uses sn_client; and this could be run from ANY website in the world and used to pull assets/data from SAFE!?
So effectively, any normal website can use the SAFE network with this WASM code.
About this, I would caution against using a privkey with a large amount of MAID on you computer/vps, for the testnets. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and use a pubkey with a small amount, nevertheless super fun to be doing these tests
I can’t really get excited about MAID, omni or emaid (which honestly I don’t really understand much about at this point), at this rate of development. i’ve been following the SAFE Network since the crowdfund and… we’re still at the command line interface and just now figuring out how the tokens will work properly? Still the majority of updates are about debugging not new features. I can’t use my tokens to buy data I can upload stuff to a network to so they don’t have much worth to me regardless of the platform they’re traded on and the longer things drag on there is less reason for me to buy more. Call them safecoins, call them utility tokens, call them SNT, whatever. They all mean the same thing to me. Dohickies I can use to purchase space on a persistant decentralized encrypted network. But if there is no decentralized internet and development is slower than snail mail in the 6th century… well that doesn’t inspire epic levels of excitement.
But there is movement, right? It will soon be 10 years since I know about this movement and still no one else is moving in this direction, everyone is taking the easy path of pseudo decentralization - Sia, Storj, Filecoin, ICP…
My post was really just a bit of tongue-in-cheek although it is not unfathomable to think that folk may make a renewed effort to get a few omni maid for testing, I certainly would if I only had eMAID, most likely not enough to truly move the needle though.
All that aside, re excitement.
The tokens eMAID/MAID are not meant to be exciting.
Wait just a (little longer) for the guys to nail WebAssembly and the API. Excitement errr soon.
Also most of us still need to fully wrap our heads around what wasm is going to do for us.
You should check out the new Iroh (number zero · GitHub; https://iroh.network). You can use your own nodes with the network. Only thing they haven’t done (yet) is add a crypto to pay for storage (seems they opted for pay with fiat or use your own nodes instead). They moved super fast and put something out that’s useful. Some of these folks worked on libp2p and ipfs before.
I wouldn’t underestimate what else is out there or upcoming. I would try to get a minimum usable network out there asap to start getting mindshare. Be as lean as lean as possible in terms of features (e.g., super large file uploads weren’t needed to be in place to launch; royalties also weren’t needed to be in place to launch and might help prevent regulatory headaches, etc.).
That means nothing. I could whip up a GUI in a few minutes in Linux because of that CLI. You aren’t understanding what the hard part really is here - and to put it simply, the hard part is mostly done.
Yes, we’ve been doing this on testnets for many months now. But clearly they won’t want to launch until it has all basics needed for MVP including a means of getting tokens via MAID/eMAID.
This is simply because you haven’t really been paying attention. Launch is really close.
What is the plan of WASM apps hosting/deployment? Where would app files (index.html, main.js, WASM libs etc.) be served from? Safenet deploy would require a support for Safenet in user’s browser. Deploying as a native app (Tauri/Electron) would need a multiplatform release, thus losing the advantage of WASM.
Maidsafe has a fantastic community that other projects can’t match. We are here every week sharing ideas, being creative, and testing. Weekly updates provide unity and focus. There are many cheerleaders and also a few skeptics.
Maidsafe has integrity. Management here answers any and all questions. They are here for the long haul.
Maidsafe has the right goal. Like the plodding tortoise, they are persistently heading towards it, passing sleeping rabbits in the process.
You don’t have to be excited. I’m excited enough for the both of us.
@Blindsite2k Your complaints may have had a little validity if there was any evidence of you participating in the testnets or some other effort on your part to move the project forward.
Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. No god-level geekiness is required, just a little tech knowledge ( just ask for assistance) and a little persistence and time staying up to date with the weekly updates.
Guys, go easy on @Blindsite2k and others who raise such talking points. This project has taken a long time, we have had early on testnets with reliable storage of data and nodes at home. The project then whet down the wrong path for a couple of years and has delayed us. That was turned around and took another year or so to get into this straight we are in now.
For many people this was a bumpy ride that spelt disaster and moved on for a time. They come back and see similar talk of launch very soon, but have not seen the underlying reason. But in all honesty there was talk of Beta around the new year by some, and I’d say we are still a few months away with wasm, cleanup of CLI, test migration of (e)Maid, royalties cleaned up, payment algo stable/cleaned up and more before suitable Beta.
I am super excited for the progress we’ve witnessed and the expected progress to launch, but each of these things will take time, even if some are a minor change. But they will not/cannot be all done at once. Those like @mav really help by taking on a specific task (exchange of (e)MAID) and of course the ones testing nodes in the testnets. Like starship development, we see the progress but the next IFT test launch always seems to take longer then expected and at times seems like it never will. Those with a deeper understand of the workings know its (starship and SAFE) progressing to final success, but those who are checking in may or may not see the light we are racing towards.
And as long as nobody from maidsafe dares to make time estimations… I’d guess no matter how close / around the corner / soon or anything like it might be… It will still be a much longer way/wait than most here might imagine…
But of course I hope to be proven wrong on this one
