You and @happybeing are correct I did not consider that there will likey be a splintering and formation of groups.

So long as we can have a annual meet where you take us sailing around the med I am ok with that

No @Southside the Lauriston and Hebrides is not the same.

No argument from me on that - as long as we can fit in the islands near Demre in Turkiye.

I can’t wait for this to finally become real :face_with_monocle::hugs:

Thanks for the hard work over the years! It’s been a wild ride! The world needs safe more than ever.

Since the Fleming Testnets a lot has changed I guess. Is there any tech / api documentation about the current state of things like data structures etc.? E g. do we still have mutable data and such things?

Criteria for when a project enters beta is usually defined by the developers and specifications of the project.

The developers/leaders will be praised or criticised for their selected parameters for going into beta.

Such things as how stable (& inclusive of features) the core of the project code is will be one criteria used. Another is what features have to be added to make the project suitable for initial launch when entering beta stage.

Typically you will find that the core code is stable enough that it can be used by knowledgable testers. Not that it is bug free or feature complete. For Safe this might (note: might) include being able to store a minimal set of record types longer term with only bugs preventing permanent storage, account structure implemented, wallets, and so on. For Safe this would also include payments to store, payments to node operators & royalties, a way to upload the data and retrieve it. And a number of other features that point to a useable product, just not launch complete.

The next stage will be release candidate releases. These are launch complete betas that are believed to be capable of being launched “without” bugs but need to be tested to death by a wider community. Yes I know some games are in beta for a year or more and don’t have this stage since effectively every one of their betas are release candidates tested by the world of gamers.

Safe on the other hand will be tested by a relatively small number of people until release candidates. My opinion is that the data in release candidates should not need to be wiped since the betas would have ironed out any bugs requiring data wipes/restarts. And that will attract a wider range of testers hoping to get some “free” storage.

While this did not answer your question of what the Safe devs actually mean by beta, I hope it helps in understanding what to expect.

I reckon coming to the Great Barrier Reef and sailing there would be a much better experience and less crowds. So much more to experience like Daydream Island and the Witsundays, such a beautiful region.

Absolutely, on the bucket list. I would actually love to do the Hebrides too.

Aw FFS - is that Maid of the Loch scam still on the go?
Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed many cruises on the Maid, both with my folks then later when they did the Sunday Music trips but now its a rusty heap of rust that should be scrapped now instead of asking folk for money that will ever see it float agian.
Almost as much of a scam as that Vulcan to the Sky pish of a few years back. One-off tech of its time that was impressive then but this is now and that was then.

We have a paddle steamer, its the Waverley and we need to forget the Maid, much fun as it was.

EDIT: Harrumph

engines for the maid were same as the wavery but it takes real skill to handel a padle steamer

Indeed.
The 0-10 knots times are truly impressive.

The three point turns the Waverky could do when coming into Rothesay with a stiff crosswind and quartering tide would make your pet seagull shit all over your shoulder. So it would…

Yaay for triple expansion engines and independent paddle wheel control.

I’ve been away from the SAFE community for a long time now, but I’m happy to learn that you’ve made such great progress!

I have my own long-running and difficult software project, so I know a bit of what it takes to finish. You have to be a bit obsessive, I think, and endure people telling you what you’re doing isn’t possible (I’ve always been good at ignoring “common sense”!)

I don’t know why or when your attitude went south

Even if I had the time reading through > 100 updates I don’t think it would be a great substitute for an API documentation to enable devs to start building apps.

I remember there was one so just wanted to ask if it’s still up / up to date.

Registers are mutable and also support local first collaboration using CRDTs. API is high on the list to be sorted.

Drink may have been involved - apologies…

We have a chicken and egg situation, doing the documentation the Right Way demands much developer time up front but may allow greater collaboration and possibly faster progress in the longer term (2-3 months?)

Moving on as before with minimal documentation lets the devs get on with delivering but leads to frustration amongst those who could perhaps share some of the load if we had better documentation.

I know what I would prefer but we are where we are and with beta being promised fairly imminently. then maybe getting that beta launch done, followed by a feature freeze with the dev time for a few weeks being split between any urgent bug fixes and creating the API and documentation. This would mean the community has to step up and help with support as we will have (hopefully) a large influx of new users.
I’d love to hear other views on this

But ultimately these decisions are up to David and the team, not me or any of the forum members. But I think we may be allowed to speculate…

Hopefully APIs will become the focus soon and once third party developers have something to work with that can proceed in parallel with finalising/testing pre beta and related tasks such as prep for beta announcement, demo apps and partnerships. Though perhaps much of that will be post beta.

I do think it’s worth getting APIs usable, even if not final, ASAP though.

From the perspective of one who has no technical ability and who is reliant upon simple straightfoward understandable instructions having an API(s), I had to look up what they were, seems essential for the masses who will want to join this wonderful project. Happy Holidays to everyone. Rest and be at Peace for a time.
