But is it possible to get rewarded for ‘popular data’? I’ve read a few threads about it but I believe that’s only the suggested tip you can reward the uploader with and not an automatic reward system as in the apps.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible, but for a few users it probably wouldn’t pay to upload (you’d have to be able to recover the cost of the PUT
s).
But that doesn’t seem like a lucrative model for competing with free sites. For non-free sites, because you can sell access cheaper, it may be profitable. But on a massive scale, the cost of downloading and uploading (in terms of bandwidth) would be significant and it’d literally be a race to the bottom, because in the end the person with lowest cost of power and bandwidth would set the price (similar to bitcoin miners in Inner Mongolia or whatever).
Still that isn’t really a lot.
The only way I see to solve it is for Safecoin to be the incentive behind the construction of the mesh network. Otherwise the current ISPs can be co-opted by forces hostile to the SAFE Network and the caps would prevent SAFE Network from ever being able to be anything more than an app like Skype or Dropbox when what we need it to be is a decentralized Internet.
Let me put that into perspective for you. MaidSafe was “near launch” when I posted this thread. Judging by the TestNet schedules MaidSafe was about 3 months away from hitting BETA, when I posted this thread. Fast forward close to 10 months and MaidSafe is still in the exact same place.
I asked around 2 months ago if MaidSafe was close to launching in about 2-3 months. Fast forward again another 2 months and still MaidSafe is 2-3 months away from launching.
I’ve been here for close to a year, and yes I do still hold MAID becuase the way I see if it MAID even becomes a tenth as successful as what it can be, our current MAID holdings will be worth a LOT.
So for the sake of some fun. I’m willing to bet 1000 MAID that MaidSafe will not launch (or reach TestNet 3) in another 2 months time. (End of July).
I am sure if you read the updates you would know exactly what is happening, this is not an easy ride and the team are working their hearts out. All these statements do is make my job harder trying to keep motivation high. I would understand your impatience and attitude more clearly and have more understanding if you did participate and at least pay attention to updates. I really suggest you wait on a public announcement if you don’t want to be part of the launch process and involved.
These snarky comments really don’t help anyone, I have never found it to be a way to motivate for success, we gave up whipping folks a while back. We accept all help where offered so you are welcome to help, but I must say your attitude to some fairly substantial brave brave decisions recently is pretty poor. We are releasing parts of the system nearly weekly just now, but this is not a get your personal rich quick scheme, it’s much more important than any individual.
If you do not believe in this project, then it’s easy to get out, if you wish to damage it keep going, if you think you can do better then feel free to fork away and do just that, it’s fine and where open source works. There is a bunch of people really at the coal face here working at extreme pace right now (sacrificing a lot) and you personally seem to be on track to try and derail this progress. It’s not cool and pretty unhelpful to say the very least. I cannot think the team can do any more than they do, but you seem to want to force them to feel down and progress faster which is incompatible with any form of reason I know of.
This may be a bit curt but I am pretty tired working my butt off for you and all the other folks here, but more importantly the rest of the world we hope to improve by introducing real Privacy Security and Freedom, if you do not believe in this, then you are definitely in the wrong place.
Stick around and see if you would have lost yer bet or not, but to make sure you win then keep up with the negative energy.
So…databases on SAFE will be key value stores, but SAFEx does not store keys or other data…it utilizes key pairs directly via ms messaging that will facilitate the FIX protocol.
Edit: It appears ms messaging is not intra / inter app messaging
Is that correct? and if so:
Where can one go, to discover the voodoo behind ms messaging?
Which API exposes ms messaging?
Not 100% sure if this is what you are after Chris https://github.com/maidsafe-archive/MaidSafe-Vault/blob/next/docs/mpid_messaging.md
We were making this part of the current sprint, but decided against it. It will be part of the next sprint which with a decent tail wind may be the last to feature complete, but don’t take that as red yet (I am 50 - 50 on whether it’s one or two sprints). The current sprint is to expose the NFS api and storage/login etc. with safecoin farming rate built into vaults (this lets app devs get their API and go to town, so start of launch proper).
The next one is posix API and Mpid parts, with potentially drive for cross platform VFS. It’s a big bag of features, but the current sprint should see routing / vaults pretty much complete (apart from Mpid, which is a simple addition now).
Should be rolling release by end of this current sprint all going well and if we are 100% successful in this sprint. We will see.(only been 6 weeks since I decided to do a rust test went further than a test)
Thanks David, I think I may have totally overlooked what defines messaging on SAFE
Are we talking intra-application messaging, message bus type thing?
I read message and my brain tells me it’s human to human communications.
Yes you are correct that is human to human I linked.
For intra / inter app messaging it is super simple. The routing API has a POST call there. In this call it will transport any type across the network from client ↔ client | vault ↔ client | vault ↔ vault. The vault side for now is limited to vault types. That will change in the future, but client types are limited by the client only. We need to get that through the client interface, which we can. This will then provide a via the network messaging system for apps.
At the moment though, crust can make connections between any device and can transport messages direct. This is a reason for crust to become multi protocol now, so we have tcp and utp (reliable udp). Adding udp and streaming messages there will be simple enough, but for now using the existing transports will allow device to device open communications (caveat, devices need to be able to handle the NAT traversal offered by crust, in the network they can actually relay via nodes, so easier to traverse nat). We are also looking at CRUST encryption, for us we want to pass down encryption keys, but for direct comms we may have to allow crust to use diffie hellman, I prefer not to as we are MiTM resilient and I don’t want to lose that.
An area we can certainly make fast headway in when we get feature complete. The network will allow device discovery and then apps can direct connect (for voip etc.) and soon will be able to use the network transport itself with all the added security that would bring.
I would think SAFE is going to be the perfect exposure for RUST and in turn SAFE will provide the perfect playground for RUST devs.
Price speculation is one thing, I came to this thread wondering the data storage price per safecoin. I was wondering this is on a variable rate determined by the network of supply and demand, or it will be on a fix rate for example 1 gig for 100 safe coin as a data buyer. from what may think I know the farmers with over supply on the network is feature and payment for accessing the data or storing data payment will be received. so an undersupply of safecoin would increase payment for farmers and in turn would this increase the cost of data on the network for the user. Myself I would like to store all my family photo’s in raw image files and video which i have currently 200gigs or more as I have family all over the world whom would love to access theses files. As a user I am wondering how much something like this would cost. I have around 5000 safe coins do i need more? I have no real idea and just probably just jumping the gun. If anyone could give me a hint because I have a large family…
Hey, @Wulfcastle I can’t really take that bet because I can’t afford it, but would you please send me at least 1000 maidsafecoins because I really want to win this bet and collect research and store them on the safe network.
This is my public to accept maidsafecoins.

It’d be cool to show you the results when I spend the maidsafecoins on the safenetwork in the future. So, it’d be cool to get a cup of coffee later on, when there is content on the safenetwork.
Thanks again @Wulfcastle.
P.s. I should get the coins because well not everyone has all the time to use them to put up content, so the load should be distributed to all people to help. So I can help and put up content and spend the coins from the bet.
I agree with this. @Wulfcastle would you mind giving to @zeroCool those maidsafecoins, and make the world a better place? If you don’t, I will.
Are you offering even odds (1:1) and how long is the offer valid?
Hi David, I feel your frustration about people posting what seems like a very un-motivating comment. There is some truth in the comment though, to be honest, since several other places like the roadmap have not been updated for a while. And probably a lot of casual fans/investors only go there…
I’m running a fan forum myself since 2007 (about a well-known American rock band) and yeah, I had to learn how to look besides and beyond the words written. David, please, don’t let those words of only 1 rather anonymous person amongst many many many other persons that have faith in this project, allow you to loose the focus on what’s really important: bring this SAFE baby to live!
That said, toi toi toi everybody @MaidSafe. I’m pumped about this project, I’ve invested quite heavily in MaidSafeCoins and of course I hope my investment will pay off on the long run. But I’m willing to wait as long as it takes, because I think the quality of the project and the well-being of the people working on it should prevail at all times over maximizing an early ROI. Just my 2cents, but I’m sure many think like me.
I’m sure too and well said. There’s a very supportive community behind you guys, who appreciate all the hard work.
Don’t let the bastards get you down!
Never Surrender!
Onwards we march!
Freedom!!!.
Everybody is free to express that he or she would like to see the project live very soon. I see the same happening on Ethereum forums. People would’ve hoped to have all these projects up and running by now. But making statements like this:
are very far of from the truth. The whole stuff got changed and rewritten to a more stable and easy for other Devs to understand language. Only the connection_manager for CRUST is already over 800 lines of code. The whole project was not only re-coded but also the whole architecture was changed. All can be found here on the forum and in the Dev-updates. And than to come here and make statements like nothing has changed over 10 months is far from the truth and quite rude. But hey, freedom of speech. Although I’d rather prefer that one would read some updates before they post statements like that.
No worries at all and thanks, it’s not for me I fire back like that but for the team, project, community and more importantly the people who need this to work. I care very little about this bag of molecules that currently is me and do not have the ego to care a jot about people that wish to attack me personally, there is more to life than wasting it on ill informed comments
Yeah, I know polpolrene, a tremendous amount of work was done, and redone for good reasons. Because I do follow the dev updates and this forum, so I know and keep on being excited about this project. Again, hats off to all involved, and I mean that!
However, my point is, casual followers, fans and even investors don’t go that deep. They see delays. They see testnet3 mentioned to start at the end of 2014. But it never happened. They hardly see MaidSafe being mentioned on the obvious places where cryptocurrencies and likewise projects are being discussed. They see a roadmap on the homepage that is never updated. And though I do not support the rude people that go start trolling this place, to a certain extent I can understand (not feel, but understand) what they are trying to say.
And the really big thing that I wanted to say is: David, don’t let these people undermine your focus, stamina and good spirit. NEVER. It’s not worth it. Take a breath, have a laugh and a beer, and move on. And let the mods decide if they should respond to the rudeness, either by addressing the comments, or kicking the member from the forum (which I did on my forum a few times).
