Problems of the Sia decentralized Internet - we will probably encounter them as well

Yep, better they use our network than take the code and start their own.

I agree with much that you say.

I however am a common man, and mined bitcoins.

Then I guess I have DPR to thank for separating me from those common folk.

But this is the reason we have the other 85% of tokens reserved for starting the network - so that uploading in the first x number of years will be much cheaper - it’s a mass subsidy for data uploaders. I don’t know if Sia, filecoin, Storj, etc, have such a mechanism, but I also don’t think they will be as nearly a complete organism as Safe will be. In terms of real anonymity, I don’t think these other storage networks have much to offer either. Also, can their tokens be sent through their networks or do you have to go to an exchange? Unfortunately I don’t know much about them, but what I do know about them, doesn’t peak my interest personally.

What are your suggested alternatives here to what Maidsafe is planning/building @Dimitar? … maybe you wrote something and I missed it.

EDIT:

Safe offers a real website oriented experience that people are familiar with. So people, like me will be uploading data en-masse to create websites on Safe. You can’t do that with free alternatives - sure you can do a little, but given increasing copyright restrictions, what’s possible on Safe with anonymous sites will dominate the decisions of people - both uploaders and users.

Fundamental differences give radically different outcomes. And Safe has many fundamental differences as compared with others.

Ah the Not-so-SAFE-for-work Network

SAFEsex? TroonHub? Debbie Does Devs?

Troon…Can’t we just name the tokens Troons…I sounds so much better, and it has some historical context as well. When I search the history I see multiple people already proposed it in the past

From a perception standpoint you are likely at least partially correct. Bitcoin benefits from this perception. But imagine if there was only 1 SAFE ever minted and we all trade fractions. The coin is worth a lot, right? But the coin price doesn’t really matter in the end. The fiat cost of storage and the reward for farming consist of two parts: the amount in SAFE and the conversion price of SAFE to fiat at the time. How the network balances these two things will be the key thing.

The Troons will set you free!!!

The MaidSafe Foundation receives 2.5% of the production of new coins. I suggest that they be used to help the growth of the network. At the moment, they are intended only for charity and can only be sold and push the price of the token down. My suggestion is to use them, at least in the beginning, to buy storage space in the network for good things like Wikipedia, which will put up pressure on the price and new farmers will come.

If we use the 80 / 20 principle we should be able to identify the 20% of the data that makes up 80% of the search on the clear net.

Won’t they be using those 2.5% to further the development of the network though? – e.g. Fixes and new features?

No, in its current form, the foundation can only sell coins and use them for charity. Which is great when the network is established. But in the beginning it will work against the network.

Wouldn’t using those coins for free uploads of “wanted” data be charitable?
Id think so.
Of course its not up to us to decide what the foundation does with their coins.
You have said you’ll happily use your own coin for that, as I would, and I hope many here would.
If done well the effect should see us gain in fiat terms even if were spending SNT.

Exactly my thinking. Building on safe with our tokens means we get new secure internet with all the stuff we want AND we don’t lose any value - in fact we will probably end up with more value in the longer run.

This is clear and self-evident, friend :dragon: I insist that we have a ready contingency plan if our individual actions are not enough…

@dirvine said the foundation could only use the coins for things that were determined by law. (I guess English law)
