MaidSafe as an alternative to Dropbox/cloud storage?

Will MaidSafe be a viable alternative to Dropbox and other cloud storage providers? Specifically, can I ‘donate’ a chunk of my harddrive in exchange for having my own data replicated and backed up across the network? Would this be a cheaper, and possibly faster and more reliable alternative?
