Instead of default free space, we should be encouraging charity, etc

Hmmmm good point, maybe in such case we need a phone verification so you can’t make x10000 accounts.

Smushbox would be a great way to solve the SMS verification problem, without being too expensive. Although I don’t know if they still exist their website looks weird.

Does this mean I’m out… I have no phone :frowning:

Frowning… Oooh keee you can use your Facebook account

@dallyshalla responds:
I have no FB account and no Internet

I respond:
Sorry then, you’ll have to wait until internet.org comes around

Heee wait a minute, if you have no internet then HTF did you send this message?

I prefer “friend” charity. Friends are usually the main reason why people join/try new things anyway. It is a very powerful and widely use method in network marketing. See the example below.

Friend Invite with (Activation Code)

David is already on the SAFE Network, earning Safecoin. He wants to share a popular app with his friends who are not on the SAFE Network.

In this hypothetical example, the app is a game that increases your characters power, based on your friend’s characters. So David sends a SAFE Network “friend invite with activation code” to 3 friends via external email. Each activation code generated costs David Safecoin and must be redeemed within 7 days. If it is not redeemed, the Safecoin gets returned back to David.

  1. The 3 friends receive an email link with “activation code” taking them to the SAFE Network download page.
  2. They install the client, connect, and setup an account.
  3. They redeem the “activation code” from David to activate their account.
  4. They run the game app and add David to their friends list.
  5. If they start earning Safecoin, they invite more friends.

Rinse and Repeat.

Here’s why this method is so powerful.

  • If the app provides an incentive to share with friends, most people will “want” to do friend charity.
  • It is meaningful to the giver, knowing they are directly affecting a person they know.
  • Popular apps provides a positive experience which amplifies the Network effect.
  • IMO, It feels more natural than blind charity.
  • Because there is a cost to each activation, the invites are likely targeted at receptive people.

There are details to be ironed out with the activation code. Maybe there is a better scheme to do this?

Developers/Builders, if you like any part of this idea, feel free to use it or improve it with your own ideas.

David, whether this is instead or not, we should do this anyway, in fact I suggested the very same just yesterday to be in LifeStuff, including with the Safecoin escrow!

All the official apps, and any app that wants to, should include this kind of functionality, so it would be good if when implementing for LifeStuff (assuming it does!) this can be broken out into a library for any app to easily include. @Viv

We could also make it easy to share via all the usual networks for those that wish to. I’m not sure about putting “tweet about this” etc in the apps, but certainly on the main websites.

Yes indeed.

Expanding on this idea, I see activation codes similar in function to gift cards. Because Safecoin only exists on the SAFE Network, the gift card or “Gift Code” feature allows people to proxy send Safecoin outside of the Network. Of course the recipient will have to setup a SAFE account to redeem their Safecoin, just like certain gift cards have to be redeemed at certain stores.

This feature could be incredibly powerful for Internet migration and mass adoption. I really hope this will be developed in TestNet3 or Beta release.

Very cool idea I like it and will see what @Viv says about it. I see a card/email/tweet link that allows a simple app to set up an ID etc. perhaps even lifestuff download. If we make it single click and its installed then it will be easy. Perhaps this is the one we get right.

On that I think lifestuff the app will earn a load of safecoin itself. We need to figure a way to distribute that as well, I was thinking get some funding for pods, maybe that is exactly what supplies the safecoin for this excersise somehow?

Yes @dyamanaka that’s a killer app as they say. Nice!

We could provide 3D print designs so people can give a physical SAFE vault as a gift, which has a QR code on it for them to redeem their Safecoin.

Have you seen the stuff you can make with a laser cutter? It’s bloody amazing, kind of 3D printing for wood (and other flat materials such as plastic, perspex, paper). You can cut amazing shapes, creating 3D objects by assembling the pieces, and you can etch designs (letters, pictures, QR codes) onto surfaces. Laser cut plywood looks stylish, much nicer than 3D printed plastics, so would be an attractive gift in itself.

I have access to two laser cutters here, but I don’t know how common they are. They cost 3x a 3D printer, but are much faster so could be used to do product runs for event give aways. The guy who set up the Nottingham hackerspace has a company selling them.

I’m planning to learn how to use the laser cutter so watch this space, and if anyone wants to help with designs be my guest.

Yea the maidsafe foundation has a large laser cutter, its on loan to another fab lab that could not afford one. They have had it for a couple of years now. We made some cool things for kids and people interested in maker stuff. They are very handy indeed.

If you have time I have a 4 axis (x y z and chuck) that can be controlled via real time linux cnc software. It is a decent machine and I have zero time to use it. It is bulky (slighly larger than a 3d printer). If you have time and interest it will do most of what a laser cutter will do and you are welcome to borrow it. I will not make use until we get to market and I can afford a house with a room for a proper lab. IF there is a way to get it to you then your welcome to make use of it, I hate things lying idle like that.
It is this one with the additional rotational head added to it

So if you can carry it you can have it for a while if that helps in your foray in maker world

Wow David, that’s incredibly generous. I don’t have space on my boat ATM but I’m sure they’d find space at the hackerspace. They have a lot of kit, but pretty sure not this. Something like it may be on a wish list though, as it rings a bell.

I don’t have time for all these things either!

BTW did I mention that Cory Doctorow helped them get it off the ground? At some point I’ll get that man’s attention!

Yes @dallyshalla is after his attention as well. If the hackerspace can use it for a while then they are welcome. If they have anyone passing Troon then it’s no problem if you want to mention it. I have enough with my robot/ai work when I get a minute (none this year so far though  maybe next year).

Thanks @dirvine I will pass your very generous offer on. Thanks!

Yes…and give one to the winner of the logo contest. If this idea of yours needs design, maybe it can piggy back the logo design comp.

It might open a can of worms, but are there other assets that need designing in the SAFe coin/network eco system?

If some kids get a chance at creating stuff then I will be delighted and if people just get the chance to actually make things and innovate then I am over the moon to have helped. I love it when folks with nothing (like me I mean) can do some little thing that can help others just dream a wee bit more. Helps me sleep better

The idea of SAFEphone seems doubly compelling if the foundation of crypto is crumbling. Security more than before means control of the hardware, software and network. SAFEphone could provide the complete echo system. Its also self promoting and might also be itself a unit of SAFEcoin. Yes SAFEphone = SAFEcoin phone unit currency. At some point as thin as a dollar bill and a literal replacement.

I think the act of individuals paying out of their safecoin holdings is going to be necessary to prevent abuse and individuals creating many accounts by inviting themselves. It might be nice to eventually pay back the person sharing their safecoins with lifestuff earnings but since we’re avoiding proof of human we need to avoid making it profitable to invite fake accounts to earn safecoin. Maybe restricting the amount of safecoin that gets reimbursed per invite from the apps earnings?
