Happy new decade!

I was convinced we have a year zero, this is hard to take in. Then I must agree with the old common usage, historically. Very interesting to see common usage changing a definition after so much time.

Though, as I love standards, I’m happy that ISO 8601 agrees with (new) common usage.

I think we should all be able to decide how old we are, just like how we are able to change our names, I may one day prefer to choose to be 1024 years old but in some non-geek places I may choose something cooler like 666 years old, ages are mostly used just for prejudgement after all, as people assume you are either too young or too old for anything :stuck_out_tongue:

Wtf Oo I never doubted the year zero exists :flushed:

Ps:

You really surprise me with ideas sometimes @bochaco

But please not… If the age doesn’t represent the lifespan your body was on this earth anymore better get rid of it all together xD what precise purpose would a non-meaningful age have…?

Good point, it becomes just metadata which is not really required, or it can be just part of the name, like bochaco666

It was only in the time of Fibonacci (13th century) that Europe got familiar with the concept of 0 (via the Moors in Spain). And then it becomes difficult to change the current system (change/replace all the written down positive dates by lowering them by 1).

AFAIK Zero in Aristotle’s time was seen as the devils number r(infinity was God). So for about 600 years the West was devoid of zero (which leads to negative numbers) while Persia and China lead the way. It was religion holding back truth/maths for the worst.

although I question zero and infinity, zero what? zero everything is not 1 less than 1 anything, it is actually a non existent quantity. 0 skyscrapers == zero trees == zero helicopters etc. It is a weird conjecture really, so I feel we should almost bypass it.

I’ll accept any excuse to celebrate.

You need three more 6s in the name to be really cool:

The 6 Sixes: What women want in a man?

  1. At least a six-figure salary.
  2. At least six-feet tall.
  3. Drives a 600 horsepower car.
  4. Has a six-pack abdomen.
  5. At least six months since his last relationship.
  6. At least six inches below the belt.

What about true variable age, for example when I wake up in the morning trying to get out of bed I feel like 86, when talking to a nice girl I feel 25. :grinning:

Consider this.
2050 is as far away as 1990.

Technically, 1990 is still closer  Let’s enjoy it while we can. :tropical_drink:

Yes at least I experienced it.

But as we age the years seem shorter, so which is closer perception wise

Perception-wise, I’m afraid, 2050 is right around the corner, and 1990 is a lifetime away. The thing that bothers me is I’m no longer capable of telling whether the time keeps speeding up for me or not. All points of reference lost by now.

31 December 1990 was 10.597 days ago, 1 January 2050 is in 10.954 days.

We have a mere 178 days to enjoy the comfort of 1990 being closer than 2050.

Happy new decade/year!. Despite the confusion caused on the mixing of number definition and calendar logic I’m very optimistic about the year ahead and the next 10 or 11 or 101 years! I am an optimist and also like to wish my fellow humans a happy and prosperous life in some small way. Maybe that’s all the tradition of NYE is? Aka Hogmanay. A way of celebrating new beginning, with spring coming and longer days ahead. Just saying. I still enjoyed reading the debate tho! :metal:
