:IF: Friends - the messenger you'll never want to move away from

oookay! that’s better now

…I’ll probably reintroduce the handshake-server version of webRTC handshake during/after the weekend … temporarily having a centralized element in the app again is better than having a app that causes issues on mainnet … I think not many people have token for using the beta network…

I’m on beta atm btw that’s why you have no chance to even connect to me right now … and I really should get some rest …

but nice to see the avatars  … now offline messages through the handshake-scratchpads + message persisting … and your screen wouldn’t look that empty anymore …

if you’re okay with talking to yourself (and you’re a bit lucky that the scratchpad updates go through fast enough on main) you can open

http://127.0.0.1:31490?accountname=southside2

in a second window and you can communicate with yourself :open_mouth:
(I did hop over to mainnet but it’s not super fast atm :open_mouth: )

I have a stash of Sepolia ANT if anyone needs some…

but you cannot use those earned through beta - it’s a different kind that rusty is giving out nowadays

Sorry - i have a stash of sepolia ETH
http://127.0.0.1:31490?accountname=southside2

its taking a while…

but got there eventually
I saw some problems in dweb output
https://pastebin.com/wy2WrmuX

Off you go to sleep and i’ll talk to Southside 2

yes exactly - you can create a 2nd identity with that 2nd account, add yourself via friend invite and those two might connect if the network is fast enough

you can open

http://127.0.0.1:31490/?debug=True

too @Southside

if the IDs you see in our chat different (they should obviously just be swapped around) we should cancel and re-establish our friendship I guess

… Okay - getting some rest now…

I had a lot of those errors when I was trying to open Atlas and Friends this time yesterday. It looked like there was quite a bit of turmoil on the network at the time from looking at the NTracking estimate of network size and reporting of server network traffic. Then they opened without those errors. Churn looks bad again just now but Atlas and Friends open fine now.

Actually, no, the network is not well just now! It was fine half an hour ago but opening Atlas and Friends produces a lot of these:-

Oh well maybe that means that people are upgrading and the network will be better soonish =)

A quick thought about the wallet balance api.

JavaScript has limited numeric representation so would a text string give you what you need?

Oh ! its there It works just fine!!

Text would be perfect

okay! mainnet performance increased enough for WebRTC connections to be established reliably again on mainnet I would say =)

if none of your communication partners is available you can use

http://127.0.0.1:31490/?accountname=secondaccount

to create a second account and talk with yourself

Is this the first chat app to guarantee a good conversation?

Probably depends on how much you value yourself xD

minor update tonight:

info about balances of connected wallet:

which should help recognizing if the correct wallet is being used and there’s enough ETH and ANT to pay for those few scratchpads

and I added descriptions and graphs that explain what data is communicated where (encrypted with which key) and what the security level is someone can expect when using friends.

(the mainnet friends will be upgraded as soon as I found the time to make some additional tests and changes …)

I still cannot get past this stage…

Activated but no connections

and a dewb serve output that consists of many many screenfuls of the one repeated message

Yes nobody is online and my accounts are broken in this moment due to forked Scratchpads and no way to resolve those forks

@happybeing already implemented a possible fix that I’ll try to get tested tonight - following that I’ll implement the ‘last seen’ feature that should resolve the feeling that it doesn’t work just because people are not online  :man_shrugging:

I’m online just now.

@southside I think this might be a new account so you’d need to bin me and load again.

Or, it might be the old original one. I had problems starting Friends because of the error failed to create scratchpad - Scratchpad already exists at this address: It opened and then said it couldn’t find an account so create a new one. I put in the same name as before and it seemed to come up with the same details as far as I can see an the Profile image. And I think I didn’t get charged for creating the account so it might be the same one. It would be interesting to know.

I can’t seem to add you though. It says ‘Profile not found’. Does someone have to be online for a request to work? I think I remember that from before.

Yes your account Scratchpad gets derived from your dweb private key not the name you choose

Yes there may have been an issue with the old account package data and then it prompts to recreate the account (reusing the account and profile Scratchpad)

I tried to migrate properly with new releases but on error this is default behaviour

Because Southside never registered his name as public name and can only be searched by his profile Scratchpad xor address

No requests work through Scratchpads and the participants don’t ever need to be online at the same moment to send/answer a friendship request - but it will ofc only be successful once both sides have online and executed their part of the handshake … And without being online at the same time you cannot chat

… I guess we soonish need history persisting and offline messages to get a more positive experience even when people are rarely online
