I’ve reached out to Erik Voorhees to discuss this. He mentioned it is definitely possible for us to integrate Omni into THORchain. However, it would then be up to the validators to accept that integration, according to Erik the chances of that happening are small. Reason for this, and I quote: “each additional chain in Thorchain adds overhead to all validators. So they are incentivized to limit to the top X chains. I don’t have any influence over the process, but if I did, I’d probably tell them not to support it for this exact reason ;)”
Ah ok, bummer. Thanks for the reply. (Looks like you were way ahead of me)
Hey, nice reaching out, and it is refreshing to hear a straight-talk response.
Thanks @anon61899651 it is worth hearing this from an informed source.
It would be interesting to hear from Erik or any Thorchain dev on feasibility to a straight ThorChain fork supporting at least three assets to swap between: Maid-omni, SNT and some Maid-erc20 or equivalent. At first look this would help minimise a few economic friction points for the future SN and perhaps solve the Maid-o → SNT transition problem.
I’ve been careful in the frequency in which I e-mail Erik, simply because I think it’s extremely valuable to have a direct email from someone that important. Erik has been very friendly and helpful and has always replied to my emails within 24 hours.
For now, anything related THORchain is pretty much impossible or insecure. But Erik has definitely given some helpful insights which may lead to something positive in the future. Stay tuned I guess ![]()
I’m not exactly sure if that’s true (I’m not that technical though). As far as I know, it obviously does run on the BTC blockchain, however, reading out OMNI will require some additional steps. Could be wrong here, maybe someone more technical can provide details on this.
You’re right about the integration, even if there is a chance of validators to accept our integration, we would still need to integrate it ourself. I’ve already been in touch with a Omni developer to see if they can help us with integrating our asset onto the THORchain, however, this seems like a dead end road for the next few months. Which is why I’ve began to look at other options.
The implication is that ThorChain nodes would have to run OmniCore in addition to Bitcoin Core. OmniCore could replace Bitcoin Core to handle both protocols, but that wouldn’t happen because OmniCore releases always lag behind Bitcoin Core releases. So any of the latest and greatest Bitcoin features wouldn’t work through OmniCore alone.
There isn’t an Omni plugin for Bitcoin Core as far as I am aware (that’s why OmniCore is a fork of Bitcoin Core).
Thorstarter might be worth keeping an eye on.
