Best Safe Node hardware

What type of storage do you all have for the Pi?
EDIT: Link please.

A SSD (110 Go) from Transcend. It’s a quite old and discontinued product, but anyway I don’t think it’s important here. On the other hand, you should pay attention to the parameter of your node, to use the entire disk (default is 2 Go) :

-m, --max-capacity <max-capacity>
Upper limit in bytes for allowed network storage on this node

I hope you didn’t use your flash!

do you mean flash boot on the pi, or flash on the camera I took?

I’m booting directory of an sd card - the berry boot image, which points to the OS (and others) on the m.2 disk. I don’t remember flashing the pi though.

Did I make any sense.

Flash on the camera, you don’t want to harm the internet.

Does anyone have experience with offline/online/interactive UPS.

Interactive from what I can tell is the only system that has no switching time whereas online is in milliseconds.

My question is, if I went with online instead of crazy expensive interactive do I run the risk of interruption.

The obvious answer should be not right? or else why does it exist.

For context.
If I have a cluster of Pi’s backed up by an online UPS will the milliseconds switch cause them to reboot?

I don’t know, but if it did you could put a capacitor across the 5v input of each and it will probably do the trick.

I wonder if the transformer in the power supply will hold a small enough charge for milliseconds to do the trick.

I don’t know about cheaper UPS:s, but I bought this one last year, and I’m happy.

The one I had before died after several years. I think it’s normal that batteries go sour over time.
I’m not wealthy enough to buy cheap stuff. Either I get quality, or nothing at all.

I have been looking at those!

Hmmm - do you still have Internet connection in case of a power outage?

I should depending on the severity of the outage.
Most ISP’s run off a similar but way larger system.
The internet should not be affected if you take care of power on your end.

Or starlink?

Apparently by the end of summer there will be no more blackouts… they still have a few minutes from time to time while they launch enough satellite’s for uninterrupted coverage.

I am not sure about elsewhere but here ISP’s have to have back up power. Battery banks and generators to recharge them during extended outages.

I have a UPS for my power-hog machine as frequent power outages here. Only gives about 4 minutes of power - but gives me time to shutdown properly. Never had an issue with it cutting out when power when out - suspect it has caps in there to deal with that.

Hmhmm - okay - I never hooked up a router with a ups (and even if… I’ve seen 2 power outages in my life…) but in case of running safenet nodes it might really make sense to make them have Internet in case it’s possible :face_with_monocle: [I just didn’t expect this to be the case in the rare occasion of a power outage]

Thank you very much for the input!

I expect, obviously depending on model a few Pi’s should have so little draw it should last for a while.

Wow, I’ve seen that many in the last month!
Living in Florida I am prepared for hurricane’s though so I have a generator to run the house.

You will also need to power your NID not only the router.

Hmm - I guess the European/german power grid is easier to stabilise (ten times the population density of the US…) but yes I didn’t even think about preparing for power outages until you mentioned it …

Hmhmm - okay that does make sense - but really makes it a bit difficult/impractical in my current situation :face_with_monocle:…
