And ofc just that you are paranoid doesn’t mean you’re not being followed
You are looking from the inside out - they are looking from the outside in and may well have identified a potential threat and have deployed their own mitigation.
Put yourself in the shoes of a 2nd or 3rd tier management droid at AWS, DO, Oracle whatever. Your job is to get on and show loyalty, imagination and concern for the your operation. Obviously you will be having regular SWOT sessions, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. If we have not featured at some of these meetings then I would be VERY surprised.
Community fallouts and dissension are to be expected (hell even demanded) in a project such as this. That and incomplete APIs, tech issues such as up/dowload hassles are merely temporary, at some point all these will be overcome and our existential threat to them becomes much more real.
Now if you were in that position, would you hesitate to get your retaliation in early? Your very nice salary and perks depend on it.
I think we’ll see if we’re fools or not soonish
but I think that doesn’t change the outside picture because we were around the corner many years now…
And hence been on their radar for many years now and they have had all that time to develop the most effective attacks AND when to deliver them. These people are not stupid.
I remeber many discussions at which it was pointed out that the network was at its most vulnerable shortly after launch.
And we were launching q3 '24 and had hackathons planned before that… How long would you plan on financing an attack on something that’s not working anyway
Its costing them something
to launch these attacks, not much though if they have spare capacity,.
“Run what you brung” “they” have lots to bring. Hell the scripts to do this may have been sitting ready for months, years to be deployed and just now was the time to run them.
We’ll see
But how will we react?
But ti is now time for me to follow @Dimitar 's advice that
if a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly
and I am off for a 15 min walk instead of the hour I should be doing
How about a simple explanation; maybe they are just individuals who want to participate . And maybe there are just a lots of them
What is the scenario we want to prevent? / we’re afraid of?
If its not a single very coordinated actor it’s difficult to launch an attack without risking to strengen the network…(against attacks from others/by causing significant growth that can be used for marketing /…)
This is where it’d be helpful if we could analyze the traffic stats to autonomi.com. Uniques, referers, (sic) browsers. If we saw a trend of dramatic, organic growth to the site over the past 4-6 months that would indicate genuine growth. If instead it’s modest growth, then the rapid node deployment is more concentrated.
I too have switched off nodes because I can see that currently the amount of data stored does not allow any earnings but… perhaps such a large increase in the number of nodes is calculated for this, if everyone thinks like we do (and quite a few people have already signalled that they will switch off some nodes) then the dispersion of the network may be getting smaller and smaller, and we don’t know what purpose someone has who is connecting such large numbers of nodes in such a short time.
Thank you! think you just answered the question i didn’t know i wanted to ask.
can i ask you about USDC v USDT v PYUSD? rather, any reason to NOT choose paypal over either other? i’m leaning that way as it looks to check a lot of boxes for me, but please do warn me off if it’s a nightmare waiting to swallow me up.
basically, since i’m still pretty green in the crypto world and everything i learn points me to two other things to explore, i’m whittling down as many options/networks/tokens as possible to find the most direct and efficient route for:
- holding ANT
- ability to use ALL of any asset and not leave tiny amounts of my cash “for gas” or as transaction residuals on various platforms/chains/exchange
- fiat on ramp → crypto of interest AND fiat off ramp
- and now w PYUSD add global payments to anyone anywhere anytime
dang, thank you again, you likely just smoothed out several nasty wrinkles for me and made my whole world a better place!! i owe you beers!
almost forgot, we only need ANT to conduct business on autonomi, correcto? no need for ETH?
It’s the weekend
We keep telling them to look after themselves and take breaks
If we don’t hear something by Tuesday lunchtime, then I’ll start to get agitated.
They know how much of the budget has gone into the wallets of the whale(s), we don’t
You might find its easier to just run nodes. There is more to responses than giving slightly modified canned responses
I would propose a counter argument to it being a big organisation or people like bezos doing this.
A datacentre doing this would create a deployment script and just run up servers with 3K to 10K nodes and deploy them in a day or two over many 1000’s of unused servers. (the dual edge sword of having lean mean nodes) As servers are needed for customers the number would drop, then go back up, basically following the usage pattern dominated by USA timezones.
This would result in 1 or many billion nodes average with it rising and dipping according to USA peak usages.
Bezos, why? He probably doesn’t even know about Autonomi and even if he did, it would just be lumped into the other attempts at decentralised file storage. A drop in the bucket that actually helps them since its something they can use to show up their superior products.
For ABCs they go oh well here is another kiddie attempt at storage. That’s if they even have it on their radar at all.
Do not overestimate the importance at this time of Autonomi in the eyes of the world, agencies, wealthy, storage providers
It is a strong touch of unwarranted pride poking out thinking Autonomi at this time is so important to warrant their attention
It is closer to what Dimitar has been saying. It is entities taking advantage of the emissions and gaming the system to maximise some profits.
Opinion of course and a counter argument to the fear of attacks
The scale is still relatively tiny.
Chia has 17 EiB of storage (spacescan.io)
Filecoin has 23 EB of storage (filfox.info)
Combined this is about 40 EB of storage.
10M nodes at 35 GB each is 0.35 EB, which is less than 1% of the storage on other networks.
You are certainly right but it is also true, it is also true that companies such as Amazon or Google have a department that monitors the market for new technologies and they certainly do not underestimate solutions such as Autonomi, especially as the project has been in the making for 19 years, which means they have certainly heard of it.
Today, someone is probably maximising the profits from the rewards, but tomorrow we cannot be sure if one of the bigtechs will not test Autonomi.
At this time Autonomi is a nothing burger to them, to think otherwise is in my opinion not realistic. To spend time worrying about all these projects that claim to be the next best thing is a waste of resources.
Only when it is hitting the news (not necessarily MSM) and search requests/results are over millions will it be investigated.
I am talking about today and in the very near future. X has so little engagement, the discord has so few, this is still a largely unknown project in the world.
We look at it with massively thick rose tinted glasses, we now it inside and out as to its potential, but for these big players it is not even past the kiddie phase
Sure they will do something (perhaps) in time, but as many have said it is mostly flying under the radar and the concept will allow adoption to be fast, hopefully much faster than the ABCs and big boys can react.
Remember the larger the organisation is the longer it takes to react in a significant way.
Really I think people here are taking potential and think others see it our way. Nope like most new tech, there are those who see its potential and adopt quick but 99.999% take time and want to see it perform. We are not even close to 99.999% people seeing it perform
If we suddenly see many billions of nodes join in a couple of days then you know AWS/google know of us. 10 million can be done by a single motivated person with a 1000 dollars (or a few thousand). Nothing for these crypto millionaires/billionaires
My theory is Elon Musk is running 12 million nodes behind a Tesla wall, as cars full self drive. This way he can make a few extra bucks, to pay for space x rocket fuel.
