What’s up today? (Part 2)

Every time I touch Windows I lose about EUR 200.

Unexpected machine deactivation, attempt to activate, then calling a call center, then being told I need to pay another EUR 200.

Microsoft as a home OS will never happen for me again.

If companies I work for want to overpay for that trash… okay, not my problem but I will try to show them the light.

I use MS WIN 11 for my main contract work daily remotely and Linux Mint for Desktop and Development for other contract work…

No problems with either.

I have been a serious Linux hack/developer since 1998, ‘free’ is a misused term with Linux.

Linux is ‘not a free lunch’ as it erodes my free time faster than anything else on this earth.

That said Linux is a ‘white box’ and one can develop and create without licensing hinderances, if they know what they are doing.

Otherwise use the ‘canned’ Linux Distros for Desktops (use their UI App download app) and don’t deviate.

The only other alternative for the quasi-technical or pure end user with an interest in running Linux apps (like Autonomi Network linux release at the Host Operating Systems level) is to imo, run a ‘known to work’ WIN11 VM instance in a Linux VM using some canned Linux included VM manager that works with the ‘Canned’ Linux, where the vm manager is included with that distro and easy to activate together with activation of the KVM Kernel Virtual Machine hypervisor (ie Linux Mint) which runs the VM manager configured MS WIN11 VM instance, if you need to run both on the same desktop/notebook system.

Perhaps it’s correct to say that Linux isn’t up to date with newest hardware - I’ve always taken that for granted as it has a monolithic kernel that requires updating for newest hardware and that takes time to roll out. So newest tech on Linux sometimes requires tinkering.

On older hardware Linux is very stable relative to windows in terms of uptime in my experience and that is one of the most important factor for me.

Once it was set-up though, was it stable? What is the short term upfront set-up cost versus the long term user-experience cost?

I bought a new laptop within the last year, first thing I did was replace Windows.

Granted the fingerprint reader doesn’t work, that may irritate some users.
I could probably get it to work but why bother it is a gimmick to me not worth the energy.

Surprising to me to see the BBC on this list at all, let alone #4.

Another one for the Linux is hard folks…

Also, I wonder what the comparative budgets for Windows v Linux are like, and how much the CrowdStrike issue is going to cost.

The law suits against CrowsStrike will likely cost them dearly.

Even if they win them all the cost to defend themselves in multiple suits against companies with lots of money. How many airlines suffered, how many fortune 500 companies suffered loss, and then government departments

Will CrowdStike survive. Maybe take bets on how long before they file for bankruptcy. Or should that be how quick.

Indeed, and don’t forget the insurers of CrowdStrike and their victims. That legal bloodbath will drag out for years.

I suppose this is what’s known as market efficiency.

Let’s put it that way, windows is widely adopted because of office collaboration tools and it is easier to use for non it people plus it is all included when you install clean image and it is self updated (either server or desktop), what else you need for let say an accountant? It is beneficial for the world we live in where few entities controling everything and it is much more suitable for capitalism in which we live (give everything, give now and make it simple). And after all it is a lobby of grand enterprises which are interconnected (major software producers (cad, erps, accounting softs…) will work with windows only, why?). Yes of course linux distros will be widely used for high grade enterprise (red hat, fedora but even red hat have to be payed for). Yes, for windows environments you need fewer people in devops and it than in linux environments. And who cares about few enthusiasts/masochists who will adopt linux distro for their needs, gates, nsa sbd else?

This release was deleted, and I would advise not jumping on these yet. Give me a bit of time to explain what is happening here.

Wow, this is some unhinged stuff here. A biblical flourish too, which is new, I feel? When did that creep in - have you recently started going back over the catechisms?

I gave up my attacks on your outrageous points at some stage, thinking it was just gratuitous, punching down, a waste of time, etc, yet now I learn it wasn’t pointless - with no pushback, you’re truly spiralling into the abyss

Who are these “woke traitors”?
