I had not really read the article. Yes a max magnetic field would limit its ability. My thoughts were more for a general superconductor working up to 75 degrees C. The current doesn’t actually flow through the conductor
In any case then the general thoughts I had can be modified to use higher voltages. It would still make the need for many transformers unneeded, like street transformers reduce by 10 or 100 fold depending on the country distribution methods. Transmission lines can be increased and put underground since small cables are easy compared to what is required for extra high voltage transmission lines.
Having read some of the article, this breakthrough is no good power transmissions. Too low a temperature (20.6oC) and high pressure requirement. But it does show we are getting closer to a general purpose superconductor. May even happen in my lifetime.
I think the high pressure requirement can be done in the cable. As they noted, high pressure is already done in some chips - much higher than their requirement. Cooling would be needed, but there’s already tech developed for that in cables.
Given the costs all up though and the conservative nature of many energy companies, I suspect this particular tech won’t get any widescale adoption. We will probably see it in many special case applications though and that would be cool.
Not that high. air is 15psi and it needs 10,000 times more. Thats not happening in transmission lines. Then the 20.6 degrees max also precludes this for useful use for transmission lines.
We are getting closer to the holy grail of superconductivity at 100 oC and atmospheric pressure.
But for many projects that now use LN2 encased cabling which already has high pressure encasing will benefit directly from this. EG the LHC
Wouldn’t be a traditional cable - it’d be a narrow pipe. But certainly within the realm of conventional physics if the diameter of the pipe/tube that the superconducting material is held in is small enough. Additional benefit to multiple small tubes is more effective cooling.
Here is an example of high pressure pipe - up to 150,000psi:
edit: also to reiterate, my belief is this is only economic for small scale special projects stuff and that it would be used by energy companies at at scale. They are probably happy with what they have and not enough competition to push them to change.
edit: I meant to type would not be used by energy companies at scale. but my typo fingers got the better of me again.
I understand but the power companies are not going to do it - too expensive. And the 20oC Max kills it too. 145,000 PSI is also crazy for underground transmission lines, especially when they are in urban/city areas, failure has great consequences for human safety. Stringing the lines on towers is much cheaper.
Agreed. I can see research going into transformers for sub stations where safety can be much better controlled because the 145,000 PSI can be contained better. But the 20oC max is still a killer for this use.
Yes small scale and projects that already use superconductors cooled by LN2
The 20oC max temp is the kill joy for any energy company currently, and they will not even consider this particular superconductor. Competition would not change this.
But it is certainly a major step towards that time when there will be a substance.
Sumplete was invented and coded entirely by AI (ChatGPT).
Yeah, I’m not joking. After a few hours of prompting, the AI chatbot had created this unique puzzle game. ChatGPT not only came up with the idea, but also coded the game, designed it and even named it!
“warmongering” - a strange word for “inevitable geo-politics has adversely affected my investments in the as-yet-unliberated province of China and Im no happy”
Suck it up, loser.
Ask the bankers for your money back.
He doesn’t use intuition - he’s a “sensing” type. 70-80% of the population are “sensing” types. They take their rules/ethics from those they believe have the greatest authority - usually the State’s leaders -governmental bodies, professors, etc…
Intuitive types like to figure things out for themselves - including the ethics for life - we challenge the status quo. It’s our nature.
These sensing types are the sort of people (again the majority) who obeyed the orders in “The Milgram experiment” (1961) - look it up if you aren’t familiar.
This isn’t an insult or an attack on anyone here - it’s just a statement of what I believe to be the reality of our world and why we repeatedly end up in the horrible situation of having a totalitarian State and democide.
The solution to my mind is that people should be tested and if they are a sensing type they shouldn’t be allowed to become managers of other people - including becoming politicians. Better that than them sending people like me to a gulag - and you can bet something along those lines is what they were thinking when they read my previous sentence.
So, go ahead sensing types, bring on the hate (I’m just going to ignore it). I’d like to be able to convey to them, that deep down they’ll know I’m right … but without a well developed intuition they don’t have a “deep down” like intuitive’s do and so they won’t understand the point and furthermore they’ve already accepted the ethics of the State (developed & built by sensing types) that we should all be treated equitably - equality of outcome – socialist ideals.
Ah well … in the end the human world is a joke. And if the world is a joke, I must be a comedian.
