Update 4th September, 2025

Next MaidSafe team hackathon theme? Would be awesome to see this!

Fantastic update. Loads of progress from team and community… we’re certainly getting closer to having something ready to show the world.

Great work all

If they’re being so careful that the native token is questionable, it might not be smart to have anything related to media apps coming from the team/Foundation. People will (have already) upload pirated content .It’s only a matter of time before copyright lawyers (parasites) come looking for blood to feed on.

Backups for personal use, right?

I actually thought personal copying was still allowed. Although, I’m sure I was told that long before 2014!

Prior to the multiple changes to the law more recently the concept of private use of a work was fine. It was profiting, performing, distribution, and so on that was a violation of copyright. A civil action was required to be initiated by the aggrieved party. In some cases mass distribution could violate some state/federal laws, but that usually involved violation of more than copyright.

Basically if someone had a copy of a work, by chance, then there was not much they could do. If you downloaded a work then there was not much for them to do and cost them a whole lot more to attempt to bring it to court.

BUT torrents uploaded as well as downloaded so they were caught in violation due to distribution.

Now for storing private (not public) files on Autonomi then its no bodies business other than your own what is stored (assuming its not illegal material  ). But if public then people need to be aware that it violates the publishing/performing aspects and maybe distribution as well, and can be a case for the rights owner to pursue action.

But of course more recent changes since 2000 could change that, but it seems unlikely those basic concepts have significantly changed. Its why many countries enacted the right of people to transcode their media for their own use. And that is because the basic concept of the copyright law was not supposed to stop you watching/using a work you bought.

In all these cases any time the media giants have tried to bring cases against a device/technology (disks, telecommunication tech, paper, tape, etc) they have been struck down in the courts as an invalid use of the copyright act. In the same vein autonomi itself would also, in my opinion/understanding, also be safe from such attacks. Then it would be the one who stored the work on Autonomi that would be the target, as is intent of the copyright act.
