I don’t think I’ve actually been asked this question directly ever.
I just had a moment to myself.
I started my journey in to Linux a loooooong time ago, weaning myself off windows.
You don’t notice it but one day you wake up and you can live happily in a Linux environment,
not even iptables scare me.
Excel. I need to sometimes put together sheets in the corporate world, and they all work
in MS excel and the only way to develop and trouble shoot is with your own copy of office.
Bits n bobs. A hangover from lockdown is having the odd games night with relatives and
friends and they use software than needs windows.
Mmmm… I don’t really have much more holding me back from being a full time Linux user,
even unity is available on Linux for when I make useless and unpopular games.
I use wine seamlessly to run Live for Speed and a couple of other games.
Wouldnt suit the hardcore gamer and I have no idea what the support for racing wheels and pedals is, let alone force feedback, but its a nice wee diversion when I get frustrated with OTLP and other stuff.
Mostly local right now. We are looking at AWS instead of DO for many reasons. I hope we will update everyone this week as we have just committed a ton of work,
Well… Linux Mint 21.1 Vera came at the right time for my switch. It is a beautiful release.
I’m now running Linux mint as my main OS, and have Win10 running inside an Oracle Virtualbox for MS Office purposes. It’s where Win10 belongs, strapped down, with a gun pointed at its head ready to pull the trigger if it makes a strange noise.
This setup just makes the most sense. I think most people that run linux VMs on Windows don’t know yet that this is what they actually want.
I do have my old hard disk in the unlikely event I want to switch back.
Odd that you asked this as printer was my first thought when I read this and figured perhaps I should try it again. I stopped using Mint simply because it would not play nice with either of 2 printers I have. zero hassle with Ubuntu though.
I used to use Mint Debian edition which might do better with printers but I’m not sure if it is still a thing.
I switched to Ubuntu because Dell shipped with it installed and supported. No complaints except having to get rid of the awful Unity desktop (I use Gnome with add-ons that make it look and with like Windows 7 desktop, the last useable version of Windows IMO.) I think it ships with Gnome now.
