Hey @Sascha,
I take care of injured pigeon (one of his main feathers has fallen and cannot fly). I’m giving him sunflower seeds. Is this good enough food for him?
Hey @Sascha,

I have a friend that looks after pigeons, he said they always go for the sunflower seeds first in the mix he gives them.
Broken wings will heal naturally, legs need set. If he has lost primary feathers, you can cut is back slightly and superglue in a feather from another bird and it will work. The Scottish society for animal welfare do this here. Hope that helps.
Good man! And my favorite subject! I don’t know about pigeons specifically, but my chickens love sunflower seeds. That’s what I usually give them when I call them to eat out of my hand. They like them best with the seed coat on. The seeds also keep better that way, if you buy a big bag. When the chickens are very young and very small, they can’t swallow the large sunflower seeds. Oat seeds are smaller and also delicious. Especially hens need calcium to produce the eggshells and keep the bones strong. You can save the shells from eggs that you eat yourself, crush them, and give them to the hens. About the only thing I don’t give the chickens is chicken meat. Eating your own species isn’t healthy for most. Especially if your pigeon is sick, I think minced meat may be a good idea. And clean water, of course.
Again, I’m not sure about pigeons, but chickens need sandy soil to bathe in. Cool wood ash is also good for washing. Animals tend to be cleanly if given the chance. But maybe pigeons like to wash in water.
I often see wood pigeons prowling the grass alongside my boat, pecking at things in the undergrowth. My guess is small creatures such as beatles, spiders and possibly slugs as this is usually in the cool parts of the day. But I’d guess he’ll be fine with seeds, they certainly like farm crops too
Here wild pigeons are pests and commonly know as flying rats. So I’ll stay out of this conversation as my views are tainted by this fact. I do like birds and we have 10 birds here at the moment
True, I have had birds much of my life too and I have to agree that they can be a pest. I don’t necessarily think they are to blame for their bad rap though, much like seagulls the nuisance behavior is totally humans fault.
